If the Democrats stick With Biden then his choice as VP becomes critical. Choosing that person on the basis of sex or race seems to appeal to progressives but IMHO the most important need is a very capable financial talent. It counters Trump's strength but more important the USA will need very solid financial leadership. I certainly don't see that type of leadership in the failed POTUS contenders nor do I see it in Obama's wife.

Maybe not, but Michelle seems very very popular.

Joe has the black vote from what I understand.

That could be the difference.

I was going to say that he does.....in spades.....

....but then I thought about it some more...

Nor do you see it in the current POTUS....but you stick to your wishful thinking.....

It matters a lot.

The election is basically a popularity contest. The current POTUS shows that.

"Obama's wife" as he puts it is a very smart person in her own right. A J.D. from Harvard Law is an impressive beginning. But that comment also shows how she'll be viewed by many people in the US, so as good as I think she could be there's too many people that wouldn't see her for her own merits.

Picking Michelle as VP is just going to add ammo to Trumps campaign cannon.

Time for new blood instead of trying to make a political dynasty.

Disagree. She's one of the most popular and respected women in America, if not the world.....

....and that "cannon" is more like a pop-gun.....

A few thoughts. First of all it's still very early but the trend lines for Trump are horrible. IMO Biden's campaign will receive a big boost with his VP pick. If Trump was smart (stop laughing) he'd counter that by dumping Pence. Pence brings absolutely nothing to the ticket. He was brought on to appease Evangelicals, because Trump was a such a pig. Twice divorced, 5 children by 3 different women (those are NBA type numbers).

However, as we have seen in the last 3 and a half years. Evangelicals simply do not care about principals. They have pretty much shown themselves to be political prostitutes. Willing to sell out their ideals for a few pieces of silver. In that case Pence brings nothing. At this stage a dope like Sarah Palin or Jim Jordan would bring more to the ticket.

While Hillary Clinton was arguably the most qualified person to ever run. She was also unbelievably unpopular. Like historically unpopular. The only person who was ever as unpopular was Trump. He was very lucky he had 'Crooked' Hillary to kick around. In hind sight so was Bernie in 2016. As evidenced by his poor showing this year. He didn't have Hillary to kick around either.

You have to analyze how Trump won and who he won with. He's still popular with white men but there simply aren't enough of them to get elected. In 2016 he won with college educated white women. They have turned on him big time. In fact all the numbers show he's under water 10-15% with all women. They are completely disgusted by his behavior. You cannot win with those numbers. Think about it for a second. Take this thread and the Trump thread for example. How many women participate? 1 maybe 2? It's all the opinions of men. Women make up 51% of the electorate and they can't stand Trump anymore. They took a chance on him and they regret it. They are also not impressed by the constant Republican attacks on reproductive rights. Also in the final week of the 2016 campaign Independents broke heavily towards Trump. They didn't care for him but didn't want Clinton. Independents have abandoned Trump in droves.

Another thing to keep in mind. This time around there is no Garry Johnson (remember him) bleeding votes off the Democrat candidate. Look at Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida in 2016. Look at how few votes Clinton lost those states by and then look at how many votes Garry Johnson bled from Clinton's pile. He's the reason Trump is President. He was the Ralph Nader of 2016. There is no Garry Johnson this time around.

Biden will nail down the female vote with his VP pick. So far it looks like a race between Harris CA, Klobuchar WI, Warren MA, Cortez-Masto NV, Abrams GA, Lujan-Grisham NM, Susan Rice, Whittmer MI. All very capable of playing the tradition campaign role of VP attack dog. Trump will of course take the bait and in return, turn off even more women when he's seen as attacking a women. Might not be fair, but perception is everything. Especially considering his use of Twitter and inability to keep things civil. Just imagine Susan Rice going after Trump every day. It would be like Geppetto moving Pinocchio around.

In regards to the virus Trump has decided that once you get to a certain level of deaths it's a moot point. So he's all in on re-starting the economy. It's really his only chance to get re-elected. Once people are allowed to move more freely, infections will soar, deaths will soar. At that point the prudent thing to do would be to lock down properly. But they will never do that. Once they re-open they will stay open. Come Hell or high water. It's a massive gamble and it has the very real potential to be a massive disaster. You can be forgiven for a lot of things as President. The one thing you will not be forgiven for is unwarranted loss of American lives.

Biden currently has about a 6 point lead over Trump. That's a pretty decent lead. Especially considering he has no VP, is campaigning on TV from his basement and is dealing with a decades old sexual assault allegation. He should be trailing by 6 points not leading.

Now let's turn our attention towards the electoral college. From the Trump side, Michigan is lost and they know it, Pennsylvania is lost. Florida is looking lost. Florida has the heaviest concentration of elderly of any state. The virus loves old people. And the elderly aren't on board with all this "sacrifice the elderly to save the economy" stuff. For some selfish reason they find that unpalatable. Florida's moron Governor isn't exactly going to be a big help. Florida will be lost.

On the subject of moron Governors, let's look at Texas and Georgia. If the virus runs rampant (which they seem intent upon letting it) I could potentially see both flipping. Democrats have had their eyes on both states for some time and have been making inroads. The trend lines in Texas are not encouraging for Trump. It's certainly possible for Texas to flip this year. Georgia is less likely to flip but if Biden picks Abrams as VP it's possible. Especially considering how badly Georgia is looking like it will be ravaged by the virus.

This is how I see it in 2020, Remember you need 270 to win..........

Excellent breakdown. Trump will always have his base no matter what but he's been actively campaigning against himself the past two months.

Good summary although I would add that people should also expect another "bombshell" right before the election similar to what Comey did but this time coming from Barr and Durham and while it probably wont be a huge scandal and include a lot of hearsay about how Obama and a secret Cabal tried to keep Trump from power and frame Flynn, Stone etc, etc. And imo the admin and Trump supporters will ensure that it is covered extensively in the media, who of course are the enemy of people, until they arent.

Rambling Joe picks Hilary Clinton to be VP, then has "a moment" or another scandal, has to step down or step back, Hilary then becomes the presumptive candidate.

She has the war chest, the machinery in place and a lot of high profile people from "The Club" (insiders) she can call on.

And she really, really wants another shot at Trump, maybe even literally.

Not a very nice person to be sure (I really don't like her), but this is a very real possibility.

Futz and I have been making these points for quite a while, but for some reason the "Doom and Gloomers" always counter with "his base doesn't care"....

While that's true, it's also true (and something we have beaten to death) that his base isn't enough to get him re-elected. He had pretty much the perfect storm of circumstances in 2016 and still lost the popular vote.

The winds are blowing in the opposite direction this time around.

Time will tell

Yes, it will.

Joe is no genius, but unlike Bone Spurs, he's smart enough to surround himself with intelligent, capable people. There's no way they'll let him throw away a valuable pick like that.

Maybe if Biden had Mike Milbury on his team....

It is very likely the Biden will follow what Obama on others did.  Look no further than who was Energy Secretary during Obama's administration and who TRUMP has in that position.  One is a nuclear physicist and the other couldn't even remember that the DOE was one of the 3 Departments he would ax if he became POTUS.  Also, he had no idea that the DOE also was in charge of the US nuclear programs.  OOPS.
