Off topic but was this staged?  Because that really doesn't look like someone that got smacked in the knee.  Last time I banged my knee I almost puked and my face was beat-red.  There's not even any tears lol.

Gillis: 37 Draft picks

NHL’ers:

Hodgson(10OA)

Schroeder(22OA)

Connauton(3rd Round)

Gaunce(26 OA)

Hutton (5th round)

Horvat (9OA)

Bo is obviously the darling of this bunch. Future captain and all around stud.

Schroeder and Gaunce are non issues, though played NHL games.

Hodgson was a decent pick but traded for Kassian in a terrible trade.

Connauton was traded with a 2nd round pick for Derek Roy “baby” (lol).

Hutton seems like a nice kid and good value for a 5th rounder.

Benning (34 picks)

Virtanen(6OA)

McCann(24 OA)

Demko (2nd Round)

Tryamkin (3rd Round)

Forsling (5th round)

Boeser (23 OA)

Gaudette (5th round)

Pettersson (5OA)

Hughes (6OA)

Benning already has more, and higher quality, NHL talent in less picks.

Pettersson and Hughes are higher than anything Gillis got a crack at but also seem to be absolute studs for the picks.

Jake is underwhelming thus far, but is if nothing else an NHL’er.

Getting rid of them, there’s still more value in Benning’s drafts. McCann and Boeser are infinitely better than Schroeder or Gaunce in the “late 1st” categories.  McCann was moved, but if Pearson plays the way he did last season that’s solid value in a roundabout way.

Gaudette and Tryamkin both have pretty good upside, even after the big guys departure all signs point to him giving it another go after his contract is up.

Forsling was moved away for a poor return.

This isn’t even including the 3rd overall prospect pool Benning is sitting on: Juolevi, Madden, Woo, Lind, Rathbone, Lockwood, DiPietro... Brisebois got some NHL time last year.  Is there another NHL’er or two in there?

Pretty clear that JB has been a lot better at this aspect of the job, even with the benefit of higher picks.

AFIAK most GM's are heavily involved in the first pick but rely more and more on the scouts as the draft progresses, to the point where it's entirely the scouting staff picking in the later rounds.  Besides this isn't much of a comparison and I also note that you can be an absolute genius drafting( /cough Mike Milbury) and still look like a colossal ass when you make poor trades and bad free agent signings.

Yea he was lol true Burkie had to put up with iron mike and him almost running nazzy out of town....I rather deal with Wang then that @$$*** iron mike.

Nah that wouldn't be a problem seeing as Burke was HIS boss vs on Long Island where wacky (may he rest in peace) Wang was Snow's boss.

Keenan:  See my contract Brian?  It states I have a say on player acquisitions....

Burke:   Sure I looked at your contract.  Mike, have you seen my contract?  It says I can fire the head coach.

Wait. Isn’t this thread closed already? Even Aquaman put this rumour to rest.

Gillis is the worst idea to hit the Canucks rumour list.

He would put this team back ten years and undo the great work Benning has done and probably fire Benning and Green as a first move.

Hey friend, look, look to the horizon beyond the sea. See anything?

No?

Well friend, that’s how far that ship has sailed.

Let’s not dwell on the past. Look what happened with the canucks Jersey release. We couldn’t move on and it ended up being a failure.

Gillis was an good GM, Benning is somewhere between mediocre and bad. He gets way too much credit for drafting. His job is to acquire picks (or get higher picks) and prospects, which he has done a horrible job with. The drafting can be attributed to Judd Brackett first and foremost, and both Gradin & Delorme making some positive contributions.

Gills was going to trade the 6th overall pick to move down a few spots and draft Dylan Larkin. Typically he went with whoever the best player available was with the exception of Horvat (who was a great pick). Jenner was ranked ahead of Jensen but Jensen was still expected to go a lot higher. Also we had issues with the Chicago Wolves developing our players and it was Gillis who pushed to acquire our own AHL team.

In terms of his picks, here are where they went in the mynhldraft mock drafts:
Hodgson - 9th
Schroeder - 12th
Jensen - 20th

Gaunce - 19th
Horvat - 10th
Shinkaruk - 13th

For fun here is what the mock draft site had us picking
Beach

Erixon
Namestnikov
Laughton
Lindholm (9th)
Freddy Gauthier

Not really any better.

Same site for Benning picks:
Ritchie (Virtanen)
Sanheim (McCann)
Gurianov (Boeser)
Dubois (Juloevi)
Glass (Petterson)
Tkachuk (Hughes)

Hard to tell but the quality of the drafts do seem a lot higher.

@aqua59am confused buy your response?!?! Can you please clarify? You mention Burke? Brian Burke? Remember he worked under John McGaw and was given a budget to run the Canucks as a business and had to work within that budget. If gillis was such a good GM why did everyone want him gone in the end prior to him getting fired? You recall fans at Rogers chanting 'fire gillis" in that game versus the Ducks I believe it was? Gillis inherited a good team from Burke and Nonis and he did nothing to support the  already good team Burke and Nonnis had assembled. He left the cupboard bare in the end with no good prospects upcoming and his drafts were all horrible!

Gillis may have inherited some work done previously done but he didn't sit pat. To suggest Gillis didn't make any good moves is dumb. He made some bad ones but he made good ones too. See Christian Ehrhoff as one example. Do some homework

Agreed. But he didn’t do enough to build credible third and fourth lines for that 2011 team. Other than scraps like Raffi Torres! Malhotra and Hamhuis were a couple of good signings but he inherited a good team and didn’t add any real good players in the third and fourth lines of the team.

Do you have a source that MG was going to trade the 6OA down?

Can't agree that Gillis was a good GM. He was okay, but I think he would have been better suited to the position of President and let someone better at drafting and developing, handle the GM position.

Gillis, for the most part, inherited a team that was pretty much set and he managed to add a few good pieces, but the core that took us to the cup had already been assembled by Nonis and Burke.

I am certain on Larkin - perhaps we would taken him at 6

Canucks missed the playoffs 2/3 years and drafted poorly in the 3 years leading up to Gillis taking over. He did have a core crop of players but also made some excellent additions. At the end of the day he got us to game 7 of the finals plus a couple of president’s trophies. Also he identified that the drafting and development was broken. He made the push to acquire an AHL team, hired Judd Brackett, and would have implemented changes. He did many outside the box things for a competitor advantage as well (sleep doctors etc)

Benning in a re-build (cutting him slack on the poor on ice records) managed to trade more picks away plus downgrade picks, make terrible signings etc. That said Benning has made a few decent trades and hit the ball out of the park with EP and Boeser picks.
