[Signing] Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson

Yup, and combined with the surgery he had in Ottawa, he's a shell of himself.

He was a real difference maker for the 2 months stretch where he was fully healthy.  Unfortunately they didn't have him healthy for the playoffs.  They are obviously confident that they will get the elite player he was when healthy.

So

On Defence

Burns at $8 million through 2024

Vlasic at $7 million through 2025

Karlsson at $11.5 million through 2027

Only D signed past next year for a total of $26.5 million

In Net

Martin Jones at $5.65 million through 2023

Only goaltender signed past next year for a total of $5.65 million

At forward

Couture at $8 million through 2025

Kane at $7 million through 2024

Hertl at $5.6 million through 2021

Only forwards signed past next season for a total of $20.6 million

7 total players signed past next season for just over $52 million of the total cap.  This with the knowledge that Karlsson is still on 1.5 ankles at best and no contract yet for Pavelski and Thornton possibly retiring and not a whole lot in the system to replace that level of talent.

So San Jose has killed their teams long term depth viability by those numbers.  Seems to me looking forward the most competitive teams will ensure that their stars are making sub $10 million and have stockpiled depth in the system moving forward

Think we could take a bad contract back and get Timo Meier?

What about

To Vancouver

Vlassic

Meier

To San Jose

 Hutton

2020 first round pick

Or 2019 second round pick and Kole Lind (if he has any value in the league)

OR

Try and qualify Meier now that San Jose is probably in a bit of a cap hell

The Sharks don't consider Vlasic a bad contract.  No way they are moving Meier.  Wilson has already been talking to Meier and his agent about a bridge deal.

it is an interesting question tho... we'll have to offer this to get Panarin. Worth it or not? someone make a poll.

Honestly, as much as I'd love him (both for his play and for something exciting to talk about on CDC), I'd prefer we focus on second tier guys and trades and avoid the big ticket UFA's and keep on trucking through the rebuild.

if it was a 2 year deal that would be a little pricey, but manageable. And still better than giving that to Gardiner.

100% agree Edler>Gardiner but Edler is going to want way more than 2 years

I can ask the GF for a coke fueled threesome with Evan Rachel Wood. Does that mean it will happen?

Looks like he’s walking to free agency so yes it will happen.

bigger mistakes to be made in the 2nd tier too sometimes (cough, Loui). It would be scary and fun at the same time to see a Panarin signing.
