With Tampa he mainly played against other teams 2nd/3rd lines and 2nd pair defence. Miller/Horvat is a fair comparison objectively speaking. Bo 6’ 215, JT 6’1 218, Miller can play Centre best season 56 points at 24 to Bo’s 61 points at 24. With an extra 5 minutes a game in the top 6 would produce 50-60 points easily. Not as far off a comparison as you think. So you would trade Horvat for Miller?

Also, that argument could be turned around. Miller scored 47 points with less minutes than Horvat. Bo had 2.14 points per 60 minutes, whereas Miller actually had 2.56 points per 60. Miller was a 58 point player in 2017-18 when he averaged 17 minutes a night. His usage also became more defensive with Tampa, as can be seen by his Offensive zone start % dropping considerably (mid to high 50% down to 48.6% with Tampa). I think he gets more minutes in a top 6 role next year with us, which suggests he should return to 55-60 points. He got 48.9% ozone starts playing 14:40 in a stacked Tampa foward group. I think he's earmarked to play with Pettersson - exactly the type of player that line needed imo. Pettersson got 70.% % ozone starts last year, slightly over 18 minutes of ice time - and that was in spite of injuries to Sutter, Beagle, Edler, Tanev, Gud, etc. I imagine he is going to see some very attractive opportunities this coming season - let alone with players that are tremendously talented. He stands a pretty good chance of upticking imo. 4

We can no longer trade a 1st round pick for two years. Do we really think Miller is the best player in the league that we can acquire using a 1st round pick over the next 2 seasons? I have a hard time believing that. Edited June 22, 2019 by mpt

Popular Post Pete M
what would you trade for a 218 Ibs power forward who scores 60+ pts per year, who is just entering his prime? ...would a 1st round pick do it? ...Miller has this potential. Gator
If it's moved to the following season is it lottery protected? I don't think we will have to worry. But an injury or 2 and you never know.. trading future 1st round picks in a lottery ERA is a dangerous game

Canucklehead53
I am so torn on this trade. Excited for Miller concerned about giving up a first. Hopefully Benning can acquire a first somewhere else (like a Marleau situation) then I would be really happy again.

Maybe if we were cup contenders I'd be all in for slitting our throats (like Gillis did) by trading all our picks away. I love how people here praise all the 1st round picks playing on this team but the one we just traded away is apparently worthless. LOL jesus. Moving a third and a late 1st for what is intended to be a top line LW on this team isn’t slitting our throats. He’s gambling on making the playoffs within two seasons, that’s not a terrible bet. No one is saying the picks don’t have value but you need to give to get. I’d have preferred D for a move like that but I’m willing to wait for the offseason to play out. This is all just hyperbole. 2
