Looks like the defender broke an ankle on the play too.

JB mentioned part of the TJ Miller trade, and us giving up that first in 2020 or 2021, was us getting Hoglander in round two this draft.  Benning said getting Hoglander was like getting another first round pick this draft.

Great to hear!  Thanks Alf!

Sick of hearing how "small" this guy is.

Dude is built like a tank and his commitment to fitness means he will continue to get stronger. He was measured at 5'10" at the combine. It's not like hes 5'8.

He's basically a Swedish Max Domi. Similar build, amazing hands and plays with an edge.

We just drafted two players with the tenacity of Roussel and the skill of Pettersson.  What great finds.  Players like this can bring up the energy level of the entire team.  Could you imagine the following line in a couple years:

Podkolzin Horvat Hoglander - Wow!  Defenders watch out!

Hoglander has said a couple of times that he thinks he is ready for the NHL right now.  He certainly has NHL fitness level and his body is mature for his age.

We don’t seem to have the cap space suddenly to sign another top 6 forward.  I wonder if he has an outside chance at all of being on the roster this year.  His competition may just be Goldobin unless we find a value deal in UFA.

Pro’s and Con’s.  Good to percolate and develop in lesser leagues.  At the same time, if he has the skill and has been playing against men for 3 years already anyways, getting top six minutes in a sheltered role on a Horvat line (playing less though as he wouldn’t be on the first unit PP or PK) could also be good for development.

It feels rushed, but it depends on the individual.  The good thing is that with his situation, you could sign him to an ELC and give him a look for a few games before deciding whether to loan him to his club team in Sweden.

Or load up first line:

Hogs-Petey-Podz

And/Or 1st PP

I am usually for getting guys here as soon as possible....but now with the salary cap flattened out and our $3m cap hit from Lou's retirement ....keeping these guys developing for at least one more year will mean we will have them on ELC's until we get out from under that penalty and should leave us enough to sign Boeser this year, EP next year and Hughes the year after.

So for this year coming up we need to prepare for those cap hit contracts by playing the FA's we sign and the kids we already have up here....Juolevi and MacEwen are the only guys that should make the jump this year....the next year we may have Lind and Hoglander ready to go and maybe Lockwood or Madden as well.

Ya, it is a delicate dance.  Leaving him to percolate one year means you still get a 3 year ELC, unless you have him play at the end of the season for a few games and burn a year.  Leaving him longer means a shorter 2 year ELC.

The flipside is getting him off his ELC when he is still developing means his next contract is likely cheaper.  This is the scenario for Hughes.  He will have less of a resume and garner less cash off his ELC

Picked a Russian with the #10 pick. Picked a Swede with the #40 pick. I feel like good things are going to happen. If the Sedins taught me anything, the craziest things happened corresponding to their numbers.

That's our Team 1040. :canucks:

And Steve McQueen as your Avatar.  Now that's too cool.

Would be interesting, but he's back with Rogle in the SHL then will come over, almost certainly.  If they give him quality minutes this year, he could put up some pretty good numbers.  And next year -- yeah, he's definitely pushing for a spot.  Love the energy, the physicality, hard work on the boards, the intensity, pursuit, compete and... "the best hands in the draft."  Kid's always smiling and seems to have a great attitude as well.  Pretty sure he's the only drafted player we've heard Benning say he "loves" other than Hughes.  Methinks a lot of teams were sleeping.

I'll put this out there as well:  Hoglander >>> Nylander

I like him a lot better than Cole Caufield
