[Signing] Tyler Myers to Vancouver

Hard pass on Meyers, try to make a hockey trade instead for a cost certainty dman on a cap strapped team.

That would be ideal, but the Canucks don't have many attractive pieces to pull off a "hockey trade".

No one seems to put much value on anyone on the roster not named Horvat, Boeser, Pettersson or Hughes. JB has said it numerous times himself.

We simply don't have enough assets to trade to fill needs.

This is because the only good assets we have are the ones we've drafted with 1st rounders, all of which we need to keep.

We're not in a position to start trading away draft picks and signing overpriced free agents. We need to keep drafting and stockpiling young assets so that eventually we have enough to trade to fill the aforementioned needs.

This signing just reeks of desperation from both the owner (to make the playoffs) and Benning (to make the playoffs in an attempt to save his job) with little regard for our future.

I'll go as far as $5.75M for 5 years...if he wants more, then pass and go hard to bring Tryamkin back a year earlier for $3M per for 2 years to "a show me contract"...signing bonus to support Tryamkin buying his existing contract.

JB needs to lose the fixation of the "kid in a candy store"...he should not over pay for Myers.

No way Myers signs for less then 6.5 mil

Then we shouldn't be the team to give it to him.

Some other team willing to overpay him isn't justification for us doing the same.

Let some other team make the stupid mistake, we've made enough.

Lots of hockey folks say Myers isn’t even a legit top 4 guy and is really just a really good 3rd pairing guy who struggles when playing higher up.

$6.5 is probably an overpayment but as a UFA you generally overpay..  people crap all over Zaitsev, but he is probably just as good... and he is much less money and term.  If you can get Zaitsev+ for Tanev... you do that deal instead.

If the reports are true that we had a trade in place but balked at taking his whole contract... Paying a guy just 9 months younger and MUCH worse Myers almost as much for a way longer term would be ridiculous.

I really don't get the Myers hate on here, he's not even remotely bad

@Monty is a Winnipeg (and Vancouver) fan. In his opinion, Myers sucks.

There is enough information out there that suggests Myers is at best a #4 D-man now, and likely to regress over a long-term contract. Especially with the major surgery he went through not long ago.

As a #4, he’s very serviceable.

Benning thinks Myers is the second coming of Chara.

I don’t think so. Myers would need to be around 250 lbs in order for that to be a reality.

And he would need to get A LOT better defensively.

Let other teams fall on that grenade.

True. Outside of being a terrifying piece of business physically, Chara has had great positioning and awareness.

Does anyone contend Myers is not an upgrade on Hutton?  Of course cap is an issue, but what's the alternative?  Stack up on placeholders, but at some point we have to get the D fixed and our prospects are still a bit away yet.  If Myers would take big cap/short term sure, I think most would look at it, but will he?

The term is what is the big deal here. Myers is getting term. That’s a given. Vancouver shouldn’t be the team giving him that term.

Leaving us with who? Gardnier? Nemeth? We need help on D and JB will get it done.

Same with Edler, and fortunately the team seems to have that stance on reasonably firm ground.  They're well-aware of what's coming up in a couple of years.
