Canuck Surfer
Sportsnet caught up with Edmonton GM Canuck Surfer. Whom reporter old news said was a bit surly. What's the matter Surfer he was asked? "Nothing really!'' We're hard at work digging ourselves out of a hole of our own creation. We made a huge trade, to bring in NHL great Patrick Kane at the deadline. And had a second straight year we moved one or two bodies for draft picks. What did that do for your team CS? ''Look, it was designed to, and did signal that we wanted to move on from our rebuilding phase.''''And we think we are ready?'' > We have three recent 1st round pick forwards who have made their debut, are still with us? > We have three more 1st round pick forwards in our prospect pool. > As many as EIGHT 1st or 2knd round calibre defence prospects. > Some prospect depth at every position. > And a top 3 in the world goaltending prospect Igor Shestyorkin. > Plus just launched all world D man Rasmus Dahlin, one of our forwards is blue chip Alex Turcotte. If we add that to Patrick Kane, I'm pretty sure we wonly need tweaks to our core moving forward? So whats the problem? ''Waiting...'' They are all not ready yet! Its a kick in the guts having to be patient, wanting to be better faster. So we are going to grit our teeth. Even if it hurts. Where does that leave you GM? Honestly? We hoped to improve more. We have cap space. And again, honestly, we have had a good summer. A great draft. We also have achieved the most important UFA goals we had. Our D pool is deep, but not ready. We scored a great prospect Jesper Sellgren. Who like Nicholas Hague, might be ready? We have saved space where they can join our roster. And gratefully, even if it was expensive, landed two solid veterans bringing back Ian Cole, and signing Matt Niskanen. They can anchor the D till the rest arrive. Jesper or Nicholas will play early, until Ian arrives from injury in December. Up front we missed out on at least one big name target forward. Who might have jump started our rebuild. Left money on the table, our offer was legit said Surfer? But I suppose its not surprising the top free agent forward talent did not see us, yet, as their primary target. We had some holes, might or might not have been a strong paly off team, yet... That said, we were pumped, to attract some mature age rookie forwards; Joakim Nygard, and we're in agreement with a second winger Jakob Lilja, we feel, like Joakim, will add middle 6 speed and scoring to our roster? This gives us guys who can play with Lias Andersson & Henrik Borgstrom. Adds talent to our team without having to make trades. Even if we did not, you never do, get all your targets? Its great to get guys who might help your core. They, along with Jesper, young talent were our #1 target. Are you done? NO! We still have our feet in on another top rookie UFA. And a core veteran forward, prima aged, with plenty left in the tank! There is at least one, to two forward spots still on our roster. Hopefully from the top end? After we see where that goes, we may look at a veteran signing or trade. At the moment we're deep, but maybe don't have top talent to play with PK. But not everyone signs on, there are lots of good teams, opportunities. Any big news? 3 teams sent us offers on Rasmus Dahlin. One over the top! Wow, you'll move Rasmus? I really don't think so. But you always listen. the reporters Ears buzzing, Surfer said thanks and excused himself. 1 1
