[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

Recommended Posts

About time we got some grit up front. Need guys like this to protect BB and EP.  Intimidation matters, it's not just fighting. Also EP and BB get bumped off the puck too easily in heavy checking, something they need to work on.

Good signing.

Here's the gist for me.

We have some gold in our pockets in Petey & Co., but it's a big, bad league out there and we needed some grit and deterrents.  We're getting some of that and it rounds things out nicely.

We won't be a pushover team and that greatly increases our odds in this thing.

Not sure why the sky is still falling?  WE. NEEDED. SOME. TOUGHNESS.  Today.  Not tomorrow.

We're at the point where people who have lobbied to get JB fired the past 5 years are now uncomfortable with the idea the team might actually push for the playoffs this season.  Complaining about (mostly overblown) cap implications 3-4 years from now is pretty much the last foothold for them.. this offseason has undoubtedly left us a stronger club, in every conceivable way.

You should have helped write the final season of Game of Thrones. Fantastic fiction writing; you conjured up better antagonists than the white walkers.

No small coincidence in that time frame.  We have this year and next as a relatively stable roster, then changes happen -- Hughes, Petey, and a bunch of contracts all end.  It's almost like we have a bit of a "2-year window" or sub-plan right now.  Will be very interesting to see where it takes us.

Yeah we'll have some turn over in 2 years. Thankfully, that should be when Woo and Podkolzin make the team full time on their ELCs

Agree completely! Can't wait to see our opening night lineup.

Recall long after the 2015 playoffs Benning still saying that he was very disturbed by what happened.  I think this basically closes the circle, acquiring the nemesis for our own, and can unleash him back against the enemy.

So we are going to try and prise Matheson away from Florida?

Besides Ristolainen.. who would you guys aim for a trade?

Bogosian would also be a big-bodied defenseman out of Buffalo; UFA at year's end.

Maybe trade Tanev for picks/prospects, bring in Bogosian for one-year, and see what happens next year with Trayamkin/Woo/others?

Faulk or Pesce out of Carolina, but they need left-handed defenseman back.....

The young guys in Philly would probably cost too much.....

Every other team doesn't really have expendable top-4 defensemen on the market.

Ferland isn’t the guy that beat us up in the playoffs. The reason we got him for a such low cap hit is because we were the only team that gave him 4 years. Everyone else knows better.

hmm. not too sure 'if everyone else knows better'. He fits a need the Canucks have and will have an important roll for the future. Have to imagine being back in Canada, west coast and an important role comes in to making the decision to sign with the nuckers. Money talks but there are always other factors in play.

He does look to be the odd man out.  He's also the easiest to move - no NTC and can score.  His agent says he's fully healthy.  Won't bring much in a return but it's really just to clear a contract spot and create some cap space.  They will have to move someone anyway to take Roussel off IR.  Far easier to make a move before the season starts.

Agent Andre! Don't just tell Rick D. this.... send an email blast to all teams in the league!!!!

I agree.

Too many people thinking we are making bad moves. We've added two legit players to our top six and two solid defenceman. It seems like people hope for us to wait around for all our draft picks to be great without assuming we need to add the piece to surround that.

Ferlund/Miller - Pettersson - Boeser

Pearson - Horvat - Ferlund/Miller

Seems way nicer than what we had last year. We got tougher and didn't lose out on speed to do so.

I think this should be a lesson in "wait and see...they're not done yet".

Which is still applicable.

There's no "selling off the future because the future is here.  With Petey, Quinn, Bo, Brock, Stech, Demko you can't keep "holding off" for the perfect roster.  If you have a few pretty near perfect players, it's go time.

You have to trust in what they're showing and put players in place to help them do their stuff because they're ready.  Did anyone expect Petey?  He sped things up a bit.

If this bombs?  What if it doesn't?

You won't get another player like him and he wants to win.  So why not go for it?

If you "hold off" and put things on pause because, well, we might get better in the future you're sacrificing him in the here and now.  He wants to win.  So do we.  Sounds like that's the plan.

No team is a given or for certain.  So some will look back if we don't with a "see, told you so" but you just never know and you can't waste a Petey waiting for something else.

It is rebuilding, last year most were saying be patient and prospects, well no prospects and suddenly done? The team has got bigger, it needed to but now the team is going to jump on the shoulders of 71 game Pettersson and 145 game Boeser and ride them to what?

The future being sold out you bet ya, ever here of retirement savings? Most people do so why is planning for the future is suddenly thrown out the window because of desperation? Did poster here really think this team was on the cusp of cup run last year?

What is the expected outcome of these deals? Eriksson, how to get rid of that, Sutter, easier but still, all these clause contracts for a team that has only 4 players under 24 on it last year.

Do you think it is a good idea to rush the young players? To pressure them so much? What if any one of them gets hurt? What will this team do in the Expansion draft, who do you not sign? It is no wonder this team is so bad, there is no fore thought or planning involved.

The next GM, if that were to happen today is cornered with 8 clause contracts, less draft picks, two players now that may have concussion issues and a group of vets that all have to be replaced within 3 years, but don't plan on that just sign whoever for whatever and who cares? Winning isn't important, participation is, they should all get a ribbon, oh look he tried hard give him another million.

Building a winner might be hard but building a loser is much easier, who do the Canucks beat out for a playoff spot this season? Name a team? Colorado?, StLouis? Calgary? San Jose? Vegas? Dallas? Arizona? some of these made big improvements as well and some didn't have to they were already 20+ points better.

The perfect roster once on this road JB put the team on, is to rebuild for at least 4 to 5 years, the new NHL makes getting good top end draft picks a must to stay under the cap, a good roster has more than 4 good players under 24 on it.

Ferland helps if he stays healthy no doubt but the cost now counts in the cap and the clause.
