I know fans are excited about this coming season, but as most of said already, this isn't even a debate. The 2010-2011 is one of the most dominant teams in the post lockout era. They could arguably go down as one of the most successful teams to lose in the Cup final.

Yes to both.  The sport advances over the ages, but not that much in 9 years.

They would coast into the playoffs and at least be in the top 2-3 in the west. which would give them as good a chance as any to make the finals.

Would the 2020 Senators beat the 1960 Canadiens in a best of 7?

Make today’s players use 1960 skates, sticks, and equipment (no mask for Anderson) and the Habs demolish them.

The heavier bodies of the modern player would struggle on old skates.  Guys wouldn’t be able to handle the pucks, and Anderson would pee himself when Boom Boom ripped one past his ear.

LOL, they both have to wear 1990 era equipment to keep it fair

Not only was the 2011 team far and away the most dominant team in franchise history, it was also the most complete.

A Vezina caliber goalie, two Art Ross winners, a Selke winner, an elite bottom 6, a number 1 special teams unit, and while we didn't have a Norris caliber D-man, we didn't need one.

This topic is simple comparing rosters side by side. 2019-20 to 2010-11

Pettersson    H.Sedin

Boeser          D.Sedin

Horvat           Kesler

Ferland         Burrows

Miller            Samuelsson

Sutter           Malholtra

Baertschi      Raymond

Roussel        Torres

Beagle          Lapierre

Pearsson      Hanson

Virtanen        Higgens

Leivo            Glass

Edler             Edler

Myers            Salo

Hughes         Ehrhoff

Tanev            Tanev

Stecher         Bieksa

Benn             Hamhuis

Biega            Rome

Fantenberg   Alberts or Ballard

This comparison begs the question, could the 2010-11 Canucks make the playoffs or win the Cup in 2020.

Interesting post.

The most obvious difference is that the 2011 team was in their prime and the 2019 team is not.

If you project to prime there are many similarities.

If you project all players to when the core is in their prime (say 5 years from now), obviously some of the players on this team will be over the hill.

The defense is not near the same.

Today's Edler would compare to yesterday's Salo.  Today's team doesn't really have a yesterday's Edler.....maybe Myers.

Yesterday's rookie Tanev may equate to Stecher.

I don't think yesterday's team had a defense first shutdown puck mover like today's Tanev

There is no Bieksa or Hamhuis on today's team

Benn might equate to Rome but remember Rome and Alberts were the 7/8 D

Edler      Salo.......................Salo was an awesome #5, Edler is the #1 now

Myers     Edler

Stecher   Tanev....................the rookie Tanev was 3rd pair

Hughes   Ehrhoff

                Bieksa

                Hamhuis

Tanev

Benn       Rome

                Alberts

Fantenberg

Biega

In goal, there is no Loui

Markstrom or Demko might become a Schneider

Edler, Salo, Bieksa, Hamhuis, Ehrhoff were all #2 Dman on very good teams. #1 on average to bad teams. That is a humongous difference. Goaltending isn’t even close either.

And then add two guys who just won the Art Ross trophy in back to back seasons. The bottom 9 forwards is comparable... but that doesn’t mean much.

The 2011 team has more talent than our young roster, no doubt. But let's not forget they were beaten by the Bruins and that was due in no small reason to our lack of size - something now remedied.

Our team has more potential in our players and prospects in the pipeline. We may not be a contender yet, but I don't believe we need THAT much more to become one.

It's not close.  I think people forget just how dominant that 2011 team was.

Indeed, that 2011 was top 2-3 in every team statistical category, goals for, goals against, faceoffs, PK, PP, etc. Just absolutely dominant. Game 4 of the Sharks series summed it up how the team was. They were getting outplayed by the Sharks pretty much all game, and then Salo blasts a few PP goals in succession, game over. They were almost 80's Oiler-esque, not so much the amount of goals obviously, but how they get their wins. They can have an off game for 2 periods and put the pedal to the metal in the 3rd and just win games. Other than having a sparsely playing 4th line (which probably couldve helped them when it came to the finals), that team basically had no weaknesses. Grit, scoring, goaltending, they can win run and gun or down and dirty

How many president trophies did the group win...... supers star - franchise goaltender two super star franchise best forwards a solid a second line that drop team nuts shut down the best players and could score offensive and defensive D core. And a bottom six was incredibly effective..a  puck possession team that was extremely effective on the pp and  dominate down the middle.

2019 team hopes to be a fringe wild card team 2011 team would be in for another presidents trophy.

The line up isn’t even close and when you add how ineffective sutter and Eriksdone in the bottom six not/to mention the lack of offence from the d......and don’t forget the goaltending markstrom had a career year  ( they call it that for a reason) can he duplicate that performance Benning (and his fans) better hope so...

A entire group in there prime at the same time  vs a group that ranges from rookie - prime - retirement.

Clearly we did.  If we'd had one we might have seen a very different game 7 after injuries and the league decimated our blue-line.

The bold being clearly better players. So this current club has a long way to go to be anywhere near that 2010 club.

You mean TWO Vezina calibre goalies! I don't think theres many teams in NHL history that can trot out their backup goalie against any team, and still have stellar goaltending. That team won the Jennings, Art Ross, Hart, Selke and Jack Adams all on the same year. Incredible

Not a fair comparison: 2011 team had an Art Ross winner, a Selke Winner and Vezina finalist all on the same team. Not to mention the team also had two 40 goal scorers in the line up.

The only time we would even have conversation about comparing the 2 teams is when Pettersson is in his prime scoring 100+ points a season. Bo emerges as a top 2-way-center and gets into the Selke conversation. One of Markstrom/Demko will need to have a monstrous season and get into the Vezina conversation. What we have on this team that the 2011 team lack off is the potential of a true #1 D-man. I think this team will edge out the 2011 team if we have Pettersson, Horvat, Hughes, Boeser and one of our goalies (Markstrom, Demko or DiPietro) in their prime. I think the 2011 team really lacked a true #1 defenseman and we may have one in Hughes. Not Hughes this upcoming season, but Hughes when he is 25-30.
