You have to be blind, def and dumb not to recognize it!! 1
Popular Post mikeyman109
Great to see JB get this extension. Consistency is very important in building a winning team. Drafting has been his strength and he has his weaknesses like many others. Gillis gets way too much credit by some here for the team that went to the finals in 11. That was mostly built by Burke and Nonis. Brian Burke gets a lot of the Credit for Anaheim's cup but really the Murray brothers built that team. Burke added Pronger but that was a no brainer trade at the time. Its always essential to ad pieces to compliment what you have drafted. Yes giving up the first round pic for Miller could hurt but it will hurt a lot less if JT puts up 30 goals or becomes a catalyst for the power play with his passing skill. Things are starting to look a lot better as we look at the prospects Jim has acquired and next season we shed a lot of cap space and if the players we have in the system make a jump this could get special in a hurry. He just needs to get Brocks signature on a contract and he has had an excellent summer. Good job Jim
Popular Post IBatch
Very happy with this, JB earned his extension with how hard he worked this TDL to get a deal (nobody was interested in anything outside our core), then switched lanes into going for it at the draft, made the right pick at 10 (BPA) and a slew of forwards, very strategic given if we hit on one or two they take less time then defenseman and will become important adds in two or three years (including what we already have) as cheap replacements for the Beagles, Rousells, LE’s and Sutters on the team ... Added a good top six Swiss Army knife to the top six on a good cap hit for four years - for a first and third (under market value compared to the TDL - see Tatar) and then knocked it out of the park with his four UFA signings. If he didn’t get those guys we’d be stuck in limbo, it was risky but he managed it. Definitely the most active and hardest working GM in our division - we are also by far the most improved team in our own division, maybe even our conference. Glad he gets the extension - he earned it, he’s improving too which can only bode well for our future. On our future, never expected we’d have any chance in hell of competing for a cup with the first rebuild post Sedin, we simply didn’t get much of anything from the old core to work with, and expected a lot more bottom dwelling like other top teams go through when it’s finally time to pay the piper. Now I’m not so sure ... with Podz arriving in a couple years, the core guys growing together and what else is in our pool plus the spent money that comes back in three years - I think if things go well we could be the best team in our division and have a period of five-seven years starting now that we make the playoffs...and that the team we have will be a better playoff performer then regular season one. Stoked we added toughness and size, knew this speed fad wouldn’t stick, the playoffs are a war of attrition durability matters too. 2022-24 will be the peak...good times ahead. 4 4

He hasn't been a great GM but he hasn't been terrible either. He came into a team in a terrible situation and with no lottery luck has built the teams new core through the draft. He has however had a lot of things that are easy to be critical of. Bleeding pics in deals for average at best vets. Overpaying in UFA and being way too reliant on UFAs to stock the club. Numerous deals handed out to just bad players. Being a little too old school in his interpretation of the league. I think keeping him is a good thing as he does the most important part of the job well, he drafts well. My problem is with ownership not finding the people to compliment his weaknesses. After TL left they had a great opportunity to add a president that would help to complement him and we have heard nothing but crickets. Just want to counter what is the critical view. He wasn't bleeding picks for vets. He tried to trade picks and younger prospects for the age group just above to fill the gap left behind by Gillis. He was looking for players in the 23-25 range, so it wasn't like he was acquiring 32 year olds with his picks given up. He's made as many picks as he would have if he didn't move any picks at all because he has also acquired picks as well, so it's balanced out. There's no point overdrafting because there's only so much room to develop and contract space. He relied on UFA because again, he had no prospect pool to draw from and he understands development so he didn't want to just draft and plug them into the lineup unless they proved they were worthy of doing so. There's no doubt he made some bad choices here, but either they were meant as placeholders for prospects to fill in eventually and create competition or he generally have corrected these signings by making trades that haven't hurt us or was able to move on from the contract somehow. We have only been stuck with LE so far. Some of the supposed bad decisions though are viewed as negative, but they're actually positive because they've been taking on the hard minutes while our young guys grow in the league eg Beagle, Roussel, etc. He may have some old school thinking, but the team has gotten younger and now bigger and faster too. Some of those guys could get re-upped, but most will go in favour of cheaper and better alternatives, AG, Woo, OJ, Madden all look promising - Hogs too...but even if they aren’t ready or won’t ever play Benning can find other cheap new place holders or make trades using some of these guys. The team we have now will look nothing like the one we will have three-four years from now...and how well he does and the prospects do will depend on how far we go. Hard to see us not having a good window, even before the shedding starts... Out - Schaller, Goldobin, Leivo, Sutter, Tanev, Edler, LE, Pearson, Beagle, Rousell, Bear...over the next 3 years. That’s 11 players .... Markstrom maybe too. 12. Plus maybe one or two others. Don’t see any of them getting re-upped past that time. 3
Popular Post Pete M
To me it looked like JB was somewhat handcuffed trying to build around the Sedins when he first got here....with the Sedins gone, the handcuffs are off...and this past offseason alone is reason for an extension. 4 4

Sutter Tanev Edler and Eriksson will turn it over to Gaudette, Hughes, Woo, Juolevi and as long as the current group grows adding the likes of Podkolzin to what looks like a decent top 6, like i said it could get special in a hurry. It might take another trade, one that some will cry about again to get to the finals and maybe win it this time but the core pieces are starting to come together. 1
rekker
JB is improving as the years go on. I still cringe when he makes trades but he has built some real nice depth here. Happy to have Jim stay on longer.
nuck-lifer
I'm glad he was extended now, as it gives the team stability moving forward instead of wondering if Jim's being replaced and what direction new management will take. But more importantly this gives fans something to talk about in the dog days of summer! Onward and upward Jimbo!

What if all these off-season moves are all flops and we miss the playoffs yet again? That would be 5 out of 6 years, we would have missed the playoffs in his tenure. I guess Aquaman is playing with his house money and hoping we finally make the playoffs after a 4 year hiatus. No, it wouldn't have made sense to have a lame duck GM.

Right away he signed Neidermayer who was the best Dman in the league, signed Selanne who promptly put up 90 points, traded a super overpriced Fedorov for Beauchemin who ended up being a rock solid top 4. Traded for Moen and Fedoruk who along with Paulsson became the top shut down line in the league. He picked up Todd Marchand who ended up being a key piece of their cup run as well. Then rounded out his truculence with Brad May, Shane O'Brien and George Parros so his young horses could run. All this besides his "no brainer" Pronger deal that ended up being a steal.

It might take another trade, one that some will cry about again to get to the finals and maybe win it this time but the core pieces are starting to come together. This team reminds me a little of the year we got Luongo. When we traded for him I knew right then that something special was going to happen to the team and he didn’t disappoint. That Turco battle was probably the best goaltending we’ve had in any series ever, simply remarkable. The similarity is a culmination of Miller, Myers, Benn, and Ferland. Their combined impact will be as great as adding such a marquee star goalie way back when. Maybe the Butcher for Mommeso, Ronning and Courtnal a bit too. But back to the Luongo deal, the team was still in transition - like we are now post Sedin plus one, the WCE was over and what was left we’re the Sedins and a few promising young players plus some good complimentary players (Mitchell especially). The new core back then was still emerging, but probably two years ahead of our current cycle - the difference is Boeser and EP are having a much bigger impact then the Sedins had at the same age....I have the same feeling of confidence about the team as I did back then, a feeling that something special is in the works and that we as fans are about to embark on an awesome ride that’s just starting. At the end of it I’m expecting one or two new future HHOFers, and quite a few retired jerseys in the rafters to go along with several division winning pendants among other things hanging up there. Maybe a statue or two outside as well. Out of all the teams we’ve had only the Linden/Bure/Nedved one rivals the same potential vibes as far as young players go - sorry Sedins, late bloomers for sure but didn’t impress early on. EP, Boeser, Hughes, Horvat, Podz, Demko and even 26 year old Miller, heck he’s not much older then Horvat and will only be 30 when his contract is out - and then a pile of guys like AG/Lind/Madden/OJ/Hogs etc etc. When have we ever had this much young raw potential? Never factually. Should add JV to that list. Really think a lot would have to go wrong for us not to turn into a force of nature in this division. I don’t think it will happen over night - but I can definitely sense it coming, maybe as soon as this year but if not definitely within two or three and when it clicks we will rise right to near or the top. Like the Linden teams I also think we will see more playoff games then any since or before us (in other words we will be a better playoff team then regular season one, similar to LA but not quite as bad). If I had to bet either way about this year I’d say we have a 70/30 chance of making the playoffs. The odds will climb each year after that and our best version will come out in three-six years from now. In other words our window just slammed open, and the rest of the league will take notice. Can’t wait to see what media will say about it...they are sleeping on us now but won’t be after this season is over. 2 1
Popular Post Nucker 67
The Canucks don't have the perfect roster, but there are 30 other teams without perfect rosters too. Benning came in with a team of aging players and almost no prospects, and I look at the roster today and it's pretty amazing what he's done. I wasn't sure how they'd move on from the Sedins, but yet, they're doing it. How long has EDM and TOR been rebuilding, and still struggling to find any success? Canucks were the last Canadian team to get to the SCF, and they'll be the next one. Benning has done a lot of good work over the last 5+ years. Early Prediction: Benning is nominated for GM of the Year in 2020. It's going to be a good year. 3
