SN reporting on the JB signing had some of the regular things to say about Benning but also added that he practically started from scratch. Horvat was the only piece he got from the mess the previous regime left (their words). They also said he’s missed the playoffs 4/5 years but at least added why (most news outlets haven’t been nice to JB his first four years, that’s turning around noticeably back East at least since about a year and a half ago). For those that might be worried about some sort of record - well we’ve never missed five but this could be our first time - several teams have not made the playoffs for an entire decade - and a missed bunch 7-9 times in a row. A few of the recent ones EDM, CAR, FLD at the top then Buffalo 8 ...my favourite TO from 2003-4 (7)and they haven’t won a playoff series for quite a stretch too (14 years ha ha ha). Oh yeah ARI is also on the list - some are still counting. Basically since Sundin left TO hasn’t won anything - or since the peak WCE years. How many times have we missed the playoffs since Quin came in total? Not that many really. In fact we might have made the playoffs more then any other team in the league - aside from Detroit - I’m just too lazy to figure it out. Yes we’ve missed four times in a row, and without a GM that drafted as well we’d be missing a lot, lot more. With 31 teams you cant start with a pile of garbage and expect to do anything but nosedive, and building one player per draft max (star quality) it’s going to take an awfully long time to fill out a roster - five years minimum and that’s hitting on each draft. No wonder he’s had to use free agents as much, Vegas got a much better deal then he did and so will Seattle. It took CBJ 7 years to make the playoffs under the old system which was probably kinder then what JB had to work with. Can’t wait to see what he can manage with a mediocre team, and then in a few years at least a good one (as the core matures). Spot on!!! People need to educate themselves and also look at the history of other teams / GMs / player trades & negotiations, instead of living in a 5 year Canuck bubble. 2 3

The Canucks history / all the other teams histories put our current situation in perspective and things are looking good for us, maybe the best ever. Hard not to see.

If we don't make the playoffs he'll be fired at the end of this season anyways, management has no problem cutting lose ends. This way we ensure he makes no hasty decisions to save his neck mid season. 7 hours ago, gurn said: I wouldn't worry about JB being hasty to try and "save" his job even if he did not get an extension. At the last draft Jim picked a Russian kid that is at least 2 years away from even coming to North America, so he seems immune to that kind of pressure. On top of this ^^^, I'm with Theo, I highly doubt he's 'fired if we miss the playoffs' either. We're quite likely a bubble team this year barring catastrophic injuries or similar. But we could do what Montreal did last year of having a really good season and just narrowly miss the playoffs and I don't think he'd be at any risk of being fired. Or likewise, we could have an awful season with a bunch of injuries to key players and miss the playoffs by a mile and I highly doubt he'd be fired either. As I said earlier in this thread, 'playoffs or fired' is FAR too reductive and lacking in context. If we miss the playoffs, why? Does Myers look like Eriksson 2.0 on defense? Are Miller and Ferland both playing in our bottom 6 because they haven't fit? THOSE things might get him fired eventually (on the slim chance they occur). A blanket 'miss the playoffs' though? Nope. 4

I dont dislike the passion. We all want the team to do well and we all have differing opinions on what should be done but to complain a rebuilding team with no prospects left from the previous management didnt make the playoffs for four years is just silly.

I try to do the same, but it stopped for a couple people yesterday because of the flawed part. Lol! I felt bad after, because I lowered myself to their level (to a degree) because I was dead tired of the flawed option / negativity. I’ll have to try not to do that as much...heck, I already blocked 3 people yesterday, so that should help. 1

Popular Post JM_
I found this interesting - usually twitter is almost universally negative. This might be the 1st time I've seen a tweety poll that leaned even slightly positive to Benning. 2

COL - Missed playoffs 8 of 11 years rebuilding until 17/18 season. WPG - Missed 5 of 6 years while rebuilding (and 10 of 11 before that in Atlanta ). TOR - Missed 10 of 11 years. NYI - Missed 8 of 12. That we appear about 1-2 years 'behind' COL's rebuild after only missing the playoffs for 4 years (and going to a cup final in 2011/winning the president's cup in 2012 no less!) is REALLY fast. 2 4 2

I really want Jake to take that next step this year, he seems like maybe his brain has caught up to his body and he's mature enough to get there. If Juolevi makes it too all the negative ninnies might blow a gasket.

Colorado has a wealth of potential, no doubt. It will be interesting to see how/ if they can convert it to a winning formula now that Varlomov has left, thats potentially a massive hole for them imo. Grubie hasn't even played 40 games in a season yet. The other one is will they go full Oilers and rush their kids? Its always easy to point to another teams prospects and see the grass greener. Lets wait and see what the season brings. Edited August 18, 2019 by Jimmy McGill 4
