I agree that it's impressive and that she should be lauded for her talents and commitment. I just think the attention she's getting for it is a little much for what she's actually contributed to the world.

Maybe a small party at home with her friends around would have been nice and appropriate, but being situated in the international media spotlight? There's value in competition and being the best at something, but she didn't cure cancer.

Sports are huge worldwide so the biggest competitions draw a lot of attention and hoopla.  A lot of $$ generated and changing hands too.

It was a huge feat - something never done before here - so that's part of it.  A Canadian woman doing something on this scale (especially with her back story in consideration of the climate of the world atm) is fairly significant.

She didn't cure cancer - yet?  Maybe she'll do that too?  Sky's the limit for those who set their minds on something and then go after it.  Which is a great message to send to others/young women and men...some of whom may strive to achieve their goals too as a result.  Even curing cancer.  I think it's great to celebrate an accomplishment that's based on determination and hard work....to come through the ranks virtually unknown and take the world by storm.  Serena Williams has been the best for a long time so a 19 year old beating her (first by way of injury then legit beating her) in a match that went down as it did is big news.

I get that you think it's over the top.   Just wait until we win the SC.....    ;)

There's people who have done a lot for the world but get zero attention. There's people who make porn videos and get a lot of fame. It's just the way it is.

However, the fact that she is the first Canadian AND woman to defeat a HIGHLY decorated American at the US Open is unheard of. Historically, this probably hasn't happened before.

So... I disagree with you. She absolutely deserves the fame. The fame is something she'll carry with her for the rest of her career.
