Maybe he should be with Petey?

86Viking
9:11 of ice time for Jake. Maybe its the coach showing him the tough love for not reaching his goals over summer or not having a good pre season? Hope he gets more ice, hard for a player like him to be engaged or effective sitting on the bench for long periods. Also, doesn't make a team want to make any kind of reasonable offer for him "IF" management is entertaining the thought of possibly moving on from the former 6th overall pick. Pickly
Like, Tim Schaller? Really? Sutter didn’t look like he was capable of being that shut down guy anymore last night. On a positive, the top 6 and D looked much better last night. The bottom 6 needs some changes ASAP. Too slow and ineffective. Get Baer and Gaudette into this lineup and put them on the 3rd line. Move Sutter to wing with Beagle.

Personally if Jake didn’t make his goals as asked and based on his camp I’m at a loss as to how he has a spot let alone more ice time.

Those work really well in practice when the defence is your own team not interested in getting hurt. I was a really good player, in practice. Whoooole nother ball of yarn against a team clogging the lanes. Pearson had the right idea. Just shoot the damn thing. You'll get chances. I liked it when our passing would open up their collapsed box to free up the points for some hard shots / one timers - leading to goals. Boeser trying to thread a pass through 4 flames' sticks in the last 20 seconds of a game kinda sums up my argument. Barrie Trotz questions the effectiveness of just shooting pucks on net. He wants his players to learn how to create high percentage plays instead of wasting shots. When the Capitals won they were the team with the least shots that season. Trotz says you 1st have to create a great scoring chance and then only you shoot. He's basically preaching the opposite of the adage get pucks on net and good things will happen. He talks of using advanced stats to adjust the way he coaches (*) - he is really focused on creating high percentage plays rather than improving the low percentage ones. He admits that he doesn't have enough pop up front in NYI to execute (unlike Washington) but as they add skills their numbers should improve. Holtby says the shots that are hard to stop are not what most people think and that a high volume of shots off low scoring plays builds confidence for the goalie. If the goalie gets his eyes on the puck for more than 0.5 seconds, only 2.7% of shots turn into goals - not even 3 goals on 100 shots. Yet between 60 to 70% of shots in a game are clear-sighted shots. Trotz is trying to have his players limit taking those kind of shots. You lose possession and there's too little chance of scoring. (*) Trotz is very critical of Corsi and doesn't seem to think much of those advanced stat websites because they often paint an incomplete if not false picture. Unfortunately so many still like to use Corsi and what not in arguing the worth of a player or how the team played. The numbers he uses are not readily available to the public. It rejoins what McPhee was saying that he trusts advanced stats more than the eye test but that the numbers in the public are pretty much useless. When they met a year ago in the conference finals, Winnipeg outshot Vegas and had far more possession time yet they lost the series. Winnipeg players felt they should have won because they had the puck more and put it on bad luck. Vegas created more high danger plays while Winnipeg were trying to capitalise on low scoring plays. It happened to Washington too vs the Penguins where they were outshooting them - that's likely when Trotz started looking at effectiveness rather than volume / possession time. Preseason Goldy on pp was noticeable, making cross ice passes, finding open man in slot and made a few nice moves to get past defenders into good scoring position. I think EP put up more points with him as well.

I was surprised when Green stated he'd be starting Ferland there given Miller is more skilled, could also tandem with Petey on draws etc. Anyway, it's only one game and literally the first one half these guys have actually played together. Might take a few more before guys start to really gel and learn eachothers tendencies etc. But CDC gonna freak out anyway... 1
Popular Post MikeBossy
Something that I think has been missed in this thread is that Tippet has the Coilers playing different hockey. Their D stayed back last night - I think Nurse maybe rushed the puck one time. Last year all of the Oilers D including Benning rushed the puck. Also McDavid is going to have a very frustrating season if his line mates are going to be Neal and Nygard - they were virtually non existent. As for Kassian he played the way he did last night almost all last year for the Oilers - this isn't something new for him. The Canucks dominated the play last night and there were several times the Oilers were running around in their own end. I don't understand all the negativity - I expected a lot more from the Coilers after all the ridiculous hype of their season opener ceremony - it was painful to watch live lol. We will see how we fair against a much better team in the Lames on Saturday. 4
