The stats showed how much he played. Half the games past 2 seasons. D corps ALWAYS plagued with injuries so he always played. The team is letting the youth get a crack now. They've been steeping in Utica for a while, so time to give them a chance. Rafferty had a great camp and Chatfield had a long look as right sides dmen. If that is depleted, then we have Fantenberg and Benn who could play in the right side, which opens up a chance for Sautner and Teves and maybe even Juolevi in the future. There's also the chance that we may even add both Tryamkin and Rathbone by season's end. Our depth is growing and Biega was the odd man out. Excellent team guy, but we are a growing team and Biega was always a placeholder and did his job admirably. We gave him new opportunity to keep an NHL paycheque (or a higher likelihood of it). 3

His former teammates (in Vancouver and Utica) will be sad to see him leave the organization and team but will be happy for him getting an opportunity to play. Players wanna play, you never know how long a guy has in a sports career. Management did Bulldog a favour and found him a home, even though it required a trade they didn't win. I hope he does well there, he's been one of the players we've iced the last few years that has always given his all every night. Players trust Benning, if they see him being true to his word. That important during contract discussions and for FA signings... agent will be able to tell their clients thay are going to be taken good care of in Vancouver. And finally it reflects well on the organisation as a whole. Well done Jim Benning.

I think this move is kind of like what the Leafs did for Leivo trading him to us for an AHL player. We are getting back an ECHL or maybe AHL guy while giving a 31 yr old underdog Bulldog an opportunity with another organization that will keep him back east regardless if its in the NHL/AHL. With how long Rafferty/Chatfield played in the pre season it was evident to me that Management felt they were close to being NHL ready or able to fill in as an "in season" call up while being quite a few years younger than Bulldog. Biega will be missed within the organization, but if we felt he was a #9-11D option for us now, they did the right thing by giving him a chance to play more elsewhere. Would have loved to see him in Utica for life, but I think that VETERAN rule played a role in this as well. Regardless, best of luck to Bulldog, and welcome former West Kelowna Warrior David Pope to the organization! 1 1
Popular Post Bo fan
Wishing the Bulldog the best - he deserves it. He truly was a team player, always prepared, never heard a negative word about him. His service work in the community was important to him and to the kids and families at C anuck Place. Good luck on the next leg of your journey. 1 1
GritGrinder
Bulldog was usually the first depth D called up when the inevitable injuries to the blue line came the last few seasons and always gave it his all and had NHL experience. Knowing the Canucks luck a couple of D will go down and there will be rookies back there in the form of Rafferty/Brisebois/Teves etc. If the hockey gods have any mercy for the Canucks this season the D will stay healthy at least until the young Comet D get their AHL legs under them for 10-15 games this season before they start getting called up. VegasCanuck
I like this. He deserves a chance to play in the NHL, I think he's earned that. Creates more space and opportunity for our younger players on defense and clears out a veteran who wouldn't be able to play every night in the AHL due to their veterans rule. 1
kloubek
Happy for Biega - though sad to see him leave. Hope he flourishes in Detroit. 1

PuckFather
We badly needed Jesus himself, we got Pope instead. Benning was outGM'ed again.

EternalCanuckFan
Good for Biega. He deserves a chance to play in the NHL. Looks like Pope has some upside but he's already 25. At the least he provides even more depth at wing and is still a RFA next summer (if the Canucks want to keep him). The Red Wings will probably be surprisingly good this year and I'm not just saying that because of their good start. A lot of their young players took awhile to get going but their investment into development looks to be paying off. They were actually respectable last season all things considered. The main wildcard for them is in goal but they have a good amount of talent at forward and on D.
flat land fish
Good for Biega I liked his work rate so much I would use him as an example for minor hockey players I’ve coached in terms of getting the most out of your skills and the value of trying to be the hardest worker on the ice.
Popular Post Bang Bang Boogie
Back when I worked at UBC, I would try to attend as many Canucks practices as I could at Thunderbird arena. Biega was always the last one to leave the ice at practice, always working on solo drills while everyone else was joking around or getting to leave the ice. He always went all out in practice with the same effort he played with him in games. Total pro, I am going to miss him and I hope he gets a regular spot in Detroit. 3 2
Popular Post apollo
Love all the respect being shown in this thread. I'm gonna hangout in this thread for a while. kingofsurrey
Biega is a warrior Would have been a great leader / teacher in Utica. Sad to see him go but happy for him. He deserves to be on a club that has some NHL time for him. Canucks got very little for him but i guess that is reality for an aging 7 -8 d man that is a tweener . AHL / NHL. Forwards that are in ECHL at 24/25 yrs old are pretty much finished... and typically should be looking at European clubs... Did Canucks save some cap space on this deal ?
hockeygod77
that's what's wrong with canucks they never give the guys down low a crack..who cares what he did inputs....the kid needs a chance...he could be a late bloomer..put him in a few games....
hockeygod77
not all first round picks turn out..not all late round picks flop...more and more good players are the late rounds...the red wings in my opinion are toughen their drafts...they play them in minors for longer than most teams unless you really got it...
