MikeyD
I don't have the most confidence in Demko but he was pretty great in that game. Still wish he'd tighten up some holes in his game but his outstanding agility made for some beauty saves tonight and was an absolute monster in the shootout. Props to him! Great game. Also that looked like vintage Pettersson. Also another game where we got lucky with refs. So far I have us with a +1 for favourable reffing which is odd.
kenhodgejr
Great game, the team is finding ways to win games when they are outplayed. If we are going to loose one of Markstrom or Demko next season, showcasing Demko now is going to be to our advantage. We either keep him as our future #1 or we trade him. I view Virtanen in the same boat. His game time now is going to up his trade value. Possible future package of Demko + Virtanen for someone good

I actually don't think that any of them are top 2 d-man material but I hope to be wrong on that one! I think the guy that has the most upside out of those 3 guys is actually Jack Rathbone. That kid can skate and he has a bomb from the point.

Ferland getting on the board is nice too, if he can pick it up now it makes us just that much tougher to beat. Some late comments. 1. Great character win. The game was close overall, with the Canucks getting the SO victory on the road against the defending Cup champions. After going down by 2 early in the second it would have been easy to let the game go, but the Canucks came back strong. So -- to repeat -- great character win. 2. Demko had another very strong game. This was not a "steal" as the game was pretty even overall, but it was great to see Demko outduel Binnington in the shootout. Demko was fully deserving to be named one of the stars of the game. 3. Hughes also looked good. He did not get on the scoreboard, but I am not worried about whether he stays in the Calder race (which is always tough for a D-man anyway). The main thing is that he looks like a legit top 4 D-man. For a guy in his draft+2 year that is great. He creates a lot offensively and he will get on the board often enough. And one thing I really like is his ability to skate the puck out of danger. 4. Agree that it was good see Ferland on the board tonight. And he was playing better. Let's face it, he had a poor start and it is important for him to come around. 5. It would be easy to say that this team looks better than last year because it has more talent. Certainly Hughes, Benn, and Myers are a big upgrade on Hutton, Pouliot, and MDZ, for example. But character and attitude also play a big role. Benning and Green have been saying that they want a team that is "hard to play against", that plays with intensity, that is good on the boards, and has the never-give-up mentality. Finally, the team has taken on that character. That makes it all the more strange that Benning signed Loui, who is the opposite -- low intensity, soft on the boards, etc. And, frankly, although I like Baer and Goldy, they also are not high intensity, tough on the boards, hard to play against players. Also, pickups like Pouliot and MDZ did not fit the model either. Of course, for guys with really high skill levels, like EP and Hughes, we don't ask them to be tough as well, but most guys on the team need to exhibit intensity and toughness. I suspect that Green has had a big impact on Benning. Since Green came on board the team really has moved in the direction of being tougher play against. 6. The PP was excellent against Detroit but there are a lot complaints about it tonight. It might be time to try Hughes on the first unit. But I agree that the system had become too static and too easy to play against. There was a time when opinion on CDC was that the PP would unstoppable with Boeser blasting the puck from one side and EP blasting the puck from the other. But it is a lot tougher than that as it is fairly easy for other teams to take that play away. Opening up good shooting lanes take movement and creativity. 2 1
*Buzzsaw*
Like all young goaltenders, Demko was inconsistent. 1st goal should have been blocked but slid through him and easy pickings for Fabri. Other two goals were shots which should have been stopped. But just when it looked like Demko would be blown out, he settles down, does a great job when it was 5 on 3, and then was lights out in the shootout. Rest of the team played well... nice to see Ferland and Bo get their first... and Leivo partially redeemed himself after all his missed chances with the shootout winner. Good physical game... the Canucks were forechecking well. I felt they outplayed the Blues for the balance of the game. I think the team would have beaten the Blues quite easily if Markstrom was in the net. But it was a good experience for Demko... another in the bank and more lessons learned and a good confidence booster. Oh yeah... what hands by Petey leading up to the 3rd Canucks goal.... Binnington was so pissed after being made to look a fool he had to jump on EP and give him a cheapshot. I think the goal was actually Petey's... but better that it went to Bo... he needs the confidence boost. JT Miller continues to live under a golden light... he can do nothing wrong now... his positioning has been perfect.

DownUndaCanuck
Massive character win obviously but the little things that didn't work for us last time are now. Great goaltending, great PK and PP, character guys stepping up at big moments. I think the unsung hero of the year so far is the 95% 1st in the league penalty kill lead by Edler, Tanev, Myers and the goalies. It's just been unreal to watch, we've had our goalies had to bail us out of a lot of 5 on 3 chances but the 5 on 4s have been admirably killed by the great D men and our solid 4th liners. 1

Don't discount Sutter who leads the team in PK time on ice/game or Beagle who is 4th. Beagle playing 60% of zone starts in D-zone and Sutter 73% so far. Freeing up our stars offensively. 1
