Ilya Mordvintsev is a polar bear expert and a senior researcher at Moscow’s Severtsov Institute of Problems of Ecology and Evolution . He says that cases of polar bears cannibalizing each other are increasing, reports The Guardian and the AFP news agency. “Cases of cannibalism among polar bears are a long-established fact, but we’re worried that such cases used to be found rarely while now they are recorded quite often,” Mordvintsev told Interfax news agency. “We state that cannibalism in polar bears is increasing.” At a presentation in St. Petersburg, Mordvintsev suggested that the cannibalism could be increasing because the polar bears lack food. He says that large male polar bears sometimes attack females with their cubs. Polar bears require sea ice to hunt seals, but the ice available to them has been shrinking. Mordvintsev says that the area from the Gulf of Ob to the Barents Sea is a popular hunting ground for the bears, but this winter the area has become a busy path for ships carrying liquefied natural gas. “The Gulf of Ob was always a hunting ground for the polar bear. Well Alf isn’t that the way of the world? Easier to interpret the world than actually work in it. At some point in the near future we will all rediscover the essentials in life.
