D-Money
They probably want to make 100% sure he's injury-free so they can buy him out at the end of the season. The last year of his deal is zero signing bonuses, and $4.25M salary. Very manageable to buy out. Edited November 12, 2019 by D-Money
Nucker 67
Kovalchoke was done a long time ago, terrible signing by LA. 1
Coconuts
It's a shame he chose to sign with LA, had he signed out east he'd likely have found success. He's a talented guy and was one of the most consistent players of his generation prior to his retirement in Jersey. Hell, he was extremely productive in the KHL too. LA was trending down before he got there and their style of play never really matched the game he's always liked to play.
apollo
Wait what?! Has he been that bad? He's 4th on their team in points... he is also last in plus minus so maybe thats something to do with it? Dedication to playing defense isn't there? HKSR
Pretty sure playing in LA is the problem as he probably still has a bit more to give. Heck, they've even made Toffoli look bad now.
BertaNuck
Loui for kovy will have to add a sweetener but kovy has 1 less year Edited November 12, 2019 by Filthy McNasty

Not because Ilya is better - heck, we might end up putting him in bubble wrap too - but simply because his buyout will be cheaper/shorter.

From the couple games I watched us play against them... it seemed obvious he wasn't interested in the defensive side of things... he clearly came back for the $ imo Still a talented player... but need heart and soul as well to win these days

mll
He has an age 35+ contract. Even if he retires or they buy him out in June, his full cap hit of 6.25 will still count against the cap. If he retires they can try and trade the contract like Detroit did with Datsyuk. In case of a buyout the full cap hit will stay on the books like Marleau in Carolina.

Quinn12
Making sure he doesn’t get hurt with a trade incoming?! Jk no one will trade for that bum
Alflives
No way are we trading for the Kovi contract. It’s far worse than Loui’s or even Lucic’s. 1
