[Rumor] Kovalchuk done in LA?

They probably want to make 100% sure he's injury-free so they can buy him out at the end of the season.

The last year of his deal is zero signing bonuses, and $4.25M salary. Very manageable to buy out.

It's a shame he chose to sign with LA, had he signed out east he'd likely have found success. He's a talented guy and was one of the most consistent players of his generation prior to his retirement in Jersey. Hell, he was extremely productive in the KHL too. LA was trending down before he got there and their style of play never really matched the game he's always liked to play.

Wait what?! Has he been that bad? He's 4th on their team in points... he is also last in plus minus so maybe thats something to do with it? Dedication to playing defense isn't there?

From the couple games I watched us play against them... it seemed obvious he wasn't interested in the defensive side of things... he clearly came back for the $ imo

Still a talented player... but need heart and soul as well to win these days

He has an age 35+ contract.  Even if he retires or they buy him out in June, his full cap hit of 6.25 will still count against the cap.  If he retires they can try and trade the contract like Detroit did with Datsyuk.  In case of a buyout the full cap hit will stay on the books like Marleau in Carolina.

Good point, I'd forgotten he was 35 when he signed.
