How the hell could they not expect retaliation? Iran is absolutely stupid to have committed to this, but reports are that Iraqi officials in fact were asked and gave the permission for this to happen on their soil. My money is in Israeli and American fighters to joint strike Iranian border defenses within the next 12 hours. But who won't step in? Maybe the US will just rain down 30 or 40 cruise missiles on Tehran and wherever the Ayatollah is and call it a day. That cost would be negligible.
