[Signing] Kovalchuk signs with Montreal

I have no interest in Kovalchuk, particularly at an escalated rental price.

But I hope the Habs get a good return for him if they do move him.

To Columbus would be my spitball.

They could probably use him...

Send Roussel that way as well.

The Habs are 'only' 6 pts out - and winning - but they have also played a few or 3 games more than most teams they trail.

If they are sellers at the deadline, I'd take Nate Thompson off their hands - we could use the backbone alongside Beagle - and adding another outstanding faceoff guy is never a bad idea.

Thompspon probably won't cost what Kovalchuk will, either.  Forget about wasting 2nds on rentals - go for Thompson and Simmonds, and move Roussel's future cap in the process, while bringing in a future that to offset the modest cost of these other two.

If they’re sellers at the deadline I imagine Thompson could be had for a 4th. He’d be a good pickup. He’s been great in the face  off circle and brings grit and reliability.

Is there even a remote chance we could trade Rooster, considering his contract?  I just don’t think it’s remotely possible.

Dadly, I see the only way JB is going to get rid of the bad contracts (like Rooster) is to attach a prospect or pick.

Exactly - and that's a price that is reasonable/low enough that it makes sense.

Really - the type of player every playoff team should be calling about - even the ones like  Van that have guys like Sutter/Beagle.  For us he'd be amore grit, more hard-to-play-against, insurance against injuries to other shutdown centers/forwards.... well worth it, and worth it to prevent the competition from adding him.   For other teams (not gonna name any lol, but teams with literally no shutdown D, that can't win faceoffs, and who wind up with franchise centers playing shutdown in the playoffs....)

Top 6 guys cost too much - and it's debatable whether they produce more separation imo.

I'd take Thompson asap - leave it to the others to outbid each other over Kovalchuk.

Trade Stecher for Kovy and sign Bogosian and Tryamkin:

Once Healthy:

Miller Pettersson Kovalchuk

Pearson Horvat Toffoli

Virtanen Gaudette Boeser

Roussel Beagle Motte

Sutter

Edler Myers

Hughes Tanev

Tryamkin Bogosian

Benn

They’re looking for a high pick. The latest rumour is thank ask is a 2nd +. A bottom pairing D doesn’t really appeal. They already have guys in the system that can fill the role that stetcher would
