if this is the only move Bergevin makes by the TDL and he could have had Baer for free, yeah thats a mistake. All you have to do is look at the slide in Montreals record since Berevin took over to see the guy makes far more poor decisions that good ones.

But When Montreal has a mostly healthy lineup Baertschi is exactly where he is now. In the minors. It’s wasted cap space no matter how you slice it. So no. Not picking him up was not a mistake

how is it wasted if Montreal has the space left over at the TDL? :picard:

its Montreal, we know what will happen in free agency.

That’s a crap arguement.  The bottom line is NHL is a salary cap league.  Decisions are made based on the cap.  Baertschi is a borderline Nhl’er that eats up $3.6m cap space (or $2.3m cap in the minors). If he isn’t good enough to be in the top 6 when the team is mostly healthy, he’ll be in the minors.  This season it doesn’t matter. But Kovalchuk isn’t signed for next season, Baertschi is.  That $3.6m in cap space gives Bergevin more options to do things over the summer (free agency/trades) than if it’s sitting wasted on Baertschi.

you get what you pay for. Bergevin's history shows he won't do much with that space.

Take Bergevin out of the equation.  Wasting cap space on a marginal player with term  to cover a short term  injury problem is bad management.  It’s a simple concept.

I'm sure many fans in Montreal wish that were possible

Baertschi will rot in Utica before the canucks will trade him with cap retention. i don't think Aqualinni will be happy to pay more salary for players to sit in the pressbox or play for another team.. we have almost 10mil worth of cap space not including luongo's recapture that when the lineup is fully healthy is either playing in the minor.. bought out.. or sitting in a pressbox.. we are looking good now but imagine if we miss the playoff this year and next.. a big reason is going to be we have 10mil cap space + the 3mil luongo recapture doing absolutely nothing... or imagine how much better we could actually be if we had the extra 10-13mil to play with.

Its not AquaMan's problem, its the GM he hired who has put us in this mess. The team as a whole should have raised hell about the Luongo cap penalty, but they are just a bunch of overly polite canadians I guess...

Agreed but a player with a history of concussion issues is more likely to be out of the league if he sustains another concussion as opposed to a player that hasn't.

Maybe, maybe not depends on the severity of the hit. Every person deals with concussions differently

Considering Kovalchuk has not become their saviour, let’s hope the Habs are still interested in Baertchi

He’s had 3 assists in 3 games.  He’s looked solid.  Baertschi isn’t the answer to what ails Montreal. Especially with another year left on his contract
