Expansion Draft Angst - Why?

Yeah, when you think about all of the goalies in the league (at least 62), and with 31 of them being protected, that leaves around 30-40 goalies that will be available. Is Demko in the Top 3 of that list? I'm not sure about that. Maybe? I sure hope not anyway, DiPietro is not the goalie of the future. Maybe Silovs can fast-track.

An undertone in many threads right now is concern about "Marky versus Demko" and similar player discussions with often cited "we will lose xxxxx to Seattle".    I don't think many fully understand how the process works.   Seattle will select one player from each of the other teams in the league (excluding Vegas) for a grand total of 30. Specifically, those 30 players must include at least 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies.    The rules for the teams is a bit more complex:

  • Current NHL teams can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie, under the following conditions.
    • All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits.
    • All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward protection limits.
  • In addition, all NHL teams must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the draft:
    • One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.
    • Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.
    • One goalie who is under contract in 2021-22 or will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current contract immediately prior to 2021-22. If a team elects to make a restricted free agent goalie available to meet this requirement, that goalie must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the team's protected list.
    • Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a team's player exposure requirements unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection.

So, what does this mean for the Canucks?   They can only lose one player directly to the draft BUT will likely lose two through the "process" so to speak (trades, waivers etc.).   However, why are people so convinced they will lose one of Marky and/or Demko?    Seattle cannot ice 30 goalies - they are limited to three.   While, as I pointed out in another thread, both are really good goalies neither is "great" and even with Demko have that potential, there are other young goalies that are in similar situations with similar potential.   I think odds of losing one of these goalies is, at best, in the unlikely (waaaay less than 50%) range.   Teams like the Rangers are in way more of a goalie pickle IMHO.    Next to position players, they are going to close someone and likely a younger Dman (I think Stecher) and through the process a decent depth forward (I have a feeling Leivo for some reason).    Those will sting but not be fatal.

EVERY team will have some "sting" but I see no reason why Vancouver will be in any grave danger.   I think the angst is far over stated by many and the Canucks are in much better shape for this draft than many teams around the league and most certainly better off than other Pacific Division teams (except Anaheim and Vegas...the latter due to exemption the former due to nature of roster and contracts) as those teams have their younger elite talent needing some of it exposed.

Short story to the above - be more worried about something worth worrying about (like running out of beer before Jake is done scoring this season).   At best, the Seattle draft will be a bee string to this team given the depth it finally has.

Haven't you heard Marky is the MVP of our team last year and should win Vezina this year.

Demko may not be top 3 in that list currently but he has the potential to be top of a more exclusive list if he pans out.

I haven't seen an excessive amount of panic but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't in the back of my mind. I like this team and I like alot of our prospects including Demko. While it's not a sure thing seattle takes him there is a good chance. Hes young with a boat load of potential and I dont know who else they would take if Jim didnt swing a deal. Maybe Olli?

I'd like to see jim send seattle a draft pick to take someone like ferland or beagle.

I think it's the unknown of who others will expose. No one knows whos really going to be available at that point, so the concern simply lies with what we see may be available with this team. I don't think anyone has really gone through a breakdown on who could be available. The goaltending situation is a big one in that we have two decent goalies and don't want to lose either, but should be easy to figure out who will be available with a bit of research for anyone willing.

I think we are fine on defense and most likely lose a forward if not a goalie. But as you said, it'll likely be a middling forward that we will manage because we have a good influx of youth/depth coming up to mitigate any loss. I really hope we don't make any trades to "protect" more players. Just let them make their pick and move on. Even in goal, I'd say go with the proven starter (assuming Marky is re-signed) and see if they take Demko. We have DiPietro in the system and could either sign a stop gap back up to allow him to steep a bit longer.

No, hadn't heard that.    I will be right back - have to get to Vegas to put some money on the Vezina as insider info like this is golden.   Thanks!

Lol like Marky but to say EP was not MVP player on this team last year is funny we mite have finished dead last without him in line up Marky lost 9 straight games at one point last year and my fellow Canucks fans voted him team MVP

I haven't seen much of this angst at all. Most people feel that we are in good place in regards to the draft, especially with Hughes being ineligible.

Did this require a thread?

Yeah I see more discussion than 'angst'. Chances are (assuming both are still here at the ED), whichever goalie we expose, will be on the short list of who to target from Vancouver.

Unlike Rob, I'm doubtful Stecher's even here next year, let alone for the ED. I could however potentially see us expose Myers depending on how our D prospects develop, trades etc happen over the next couple years. If we've got solid young D he might not be as 'needed' at that point and clearing his salary might be as much of a gain as losing him from our D depth. And he'd be a decent 'get' for SEA.

EP was 1st half MVP last season while Marky was 2nd half MVP. People remember what has been done lately. Marky has carried his game into this season.

Thought that 9 game losing skids was in second half could be wrong though

I too think we will expose Myers as an expansion shield and see if they take the bait. I like Myers, but cap space is also important. His contract is set up so he could be exposed, but also has a bonus that needs to be paid out which may or may not scare them off also. It's nice to have that flexibility amongst the defense group on who to protect which is why I'm not concerned there which is also a good thing because defense depth is where our weakness has been for a while.

If they take a forward, we are laughing.

@Rob_Zepp It's a bit hard to predict with the expansion draft being over a year away, but who do you see the Canucks potentially losing to Seattle?

Stecher is my prediction.   I also think a depth forward will be lost through the "process" of moves.  Leivo perhaps.

EP had a rookie season that was compared to some of the greats of the game Marky had a avarage season for a starting goaltender in the league compared to any season

Not sure what you're talking about?

Rangers have no goaltender expansion exposure

https://nypost.com/2019/06/12/rangers-already-keeping-eye-on-2021-seattle-expansion-draft/

Leivo expires this summer = no contract at expansion at this point.

And your assessment of how highly unlikely losing a Markstrom or Demko is = aint exactly convincing either.

Thread doesn't seem very well thought out.

You act as if Rangers will not re-sign their key studs.   Gimme a break.     Leivo will more than likely be re-signed for just this purpose is my prediction.

I find it really ironic that you of all people would invoke "not well thought out" but, hey, whatever works for you!   :)
