GB5
Seems like a decent trade. The Canucks need more depth in their top 6 to be able to go anywhere in the playoffs and Toffoli is a good player. Madden is a good prospect but he is in a lower tier of prospects and is questionable to make the NHL. Glad to see Jim pull the trigger on this one.
Popular Post mj vic
Funny what a few hours (and a few beers) can do to change your mind. I've gone from being pissed off about this deal to now feeling genuinely quite excited about the possibilities of this season. Time to crack another beer and feel even better about the future... 1 5 4

I’d rather get knocked out first round at this point than get a 6-10th pick. Look how long it took the capitals to win the cup. All those second round exits payed off. Yes playoff experience is good but overrated look at the leafs always getting beat in the first round also hasnt helped the flames who got beat hard after having the best record for that franchise. 1

I don't get why you don't think TT can't be part of that future. He's got a good buddy here, he gets to play with B and on what is becoming an offensively dominant team on the rise. It's a beautiful city to boot.........why wouldn't he seriously think about staying? 1
RakuRaku
I am pretty sure Toffoli will succeed here as he'll get service from Horvat or Petey, 5 on 5 or on PP... and his chance of re-signing with us is pretty high since he's already good buds with Pearson!! It really sucks for Ferland that he won't get to contribute rest of the season.... but it's also a blessing in disguise that having him on LTIR offered us an opportunity to add a scoring winger like Toffoli!!
Popular Post Primal Optimist
Stoked to hear this news!!! IMO Tyler Madden is 150 pounds of can't skate. WIll translate into the TV Timeout ice scraper at the NHL level. I know that sounds mean and silly: the scraper folks have to skate well. LOL. Schaller had 5 goals all year and was -15 or -17? Can't remember exactly, but it is addition by subtraction there! AND we got a sweet top nine dude for a long while as I assume he will want to re-sign here, if it isn't already negotiated. It is worth the 2nd in order to do that swap. Honestly all jokes aside, if your smaller in the NHL you have to be able to skate and Tyler Madden can't really do that at the top level so he will be a 150 pound bag of bruises and blood clots in the NHL and not much more. Great move! EDIT: follow it up with dumping L.E. by buying out or shipping out before Oct 1st 2020 and we have a stellar situation for some years to come! A broken rib cartilage does not sound like a minor injury. I like the trade on its own merits and love it when you consider our injury situation, even if it ends up being a rental. A good prospect but you have to give to get and there was no way he was passing anyone on our depth chart any time soon. No doubt... An injury in that area means he's sitting around. Hard to imagine any type of exercise. Should be back in form by April though? I'm admittedly very unfamiliar with this type of injury.

You don't trade a prospect of that quality only to recoup him in the near future.... 2. I doubt Toffoli feels this overwhelming sense of loyalty to give Vancouver a discount before testing the waters. The way the deal is structured (only costs a 4th round pick if he resigns) puts all the weight of the trade up front, which in turn puts the pressure on JB to resign which means TT is in a position to milk him for as much as he can. If I was his agent I'd be licking my chops at this scenario as JB has a vested interest in re-signing him. 3. You don't trade those kind of assets unless you are primed to go on a playoff run. Obviously JB thinks we are. He hit the JT Miller trade out of the park, but most of his other trades have been dicey at best, some of them flat out terrible. This one feels like one of the latter... Again, if we go on a decent run (say win 2 rounds), or Madden is a bust, whatever - the trade is what it is. I am fairly skeptical of either of these things happening. 1. Broke thumb. He's not winning it. You don't claim he's going to win anything until his names been called anymore than you say shutout with 10 minutes left to play the game 2. It's literally a 4th round pick. He can lick his chops all he wants, comparable 40 point players are making less than $3.25 million and are either younger or on better teams than the Kings were. He's not going to be commanding a massive increase in pay here, be realistic. A player at his age on pace to net 43 points on an expiring $4.6 million contract is going to be lucky to net a $4.5 million 2 year contract. 3. What kind of assets exactly? A 2nd round pick? An unknown prospect that weighs less than 160 pounds at age 20 playing in a college program in which we have vast evidence to show physical growth is nominally minimal post graduation that would have to supplant, Gaudette, Pettersson, Horvat for a centre position. What kind of assets? The only truly bad trade thus far is really the Gudbranson trade which turned in to Pearson and a pick that turned in to Candella. You're creating a narrative of failure layered upon failure in which this trade has no chance of success which is in fact far from reality as nothing is known yet. 2 1 3
Popular Post Hockey God
Looking into my crystal ball, I think I can see the plan Benning might be going for: Toffoli seems like a Green guy, and someone they would want to keep around if possible. The only way that happens is if there are some other moves incoming to free up the cap. So, maybe it's Leivo, Sutter, Tanev and Stetcher going out in favor of picks, promotions (Rafferty and Zach M; Gaudette to 3rd line C permanently, and Beagle/AHL forward covering 4th line duties) and additions (Trymakin). That should enable the Canucks to sign Toffoli and cover bonuses, and then it's up to getting Loui to retire to cover raises and other costs. Madden would never have played for the Canucks. A Hunter S. clone, who would have been eaten alive at centre, and if he played on the wing, I think the Canucks have enough wingers coming to cover his loss. Addition by subtraction. Loved the Miller move, love this move! We may also be underestimating Benning's assessment of what he has in Utica. If he thinks that there are bodies there ready for the NHL, like Zach, Rafferty, OJ, Bailey, and possibly even Jasek and Lind, then he might be getting set to dump a lot of salary at the deadline and try to blood the youngsters in a playoff run, as well as get some much needed energy and effort out there, which we are lacking at times this season. No cap crunch incoming, Benning has it covered. I see you, Jim! Edited February 18, 2020 by Hockey God 1 1 5

This addition may very well get them that experience and develop them into a competitive team in a shorter timeframe. This is what the Blackhawks did. I'm glad we're following this model. Many here wanted us to follow a more methodical approach like the Jets model... Both have there pros and cons but in this day and age with the cap, we would be priced out of some of our most promising players just coming into their prime... Just like the Jets. The time is now!

Trebreh
Miller - Pettersson - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli Ferland - Gaudette - Virtanen Roussel - Beagle - MacEwen when this team gets healthy, we're going to be a problem in the playoffs.

They'll both get deals structured like BB, just with more $, but not as much as people think. I think Petey might sign long term out of his ELC. Could get him cheaper if he did it sooner than later. Defenseman never sign monster deals out of ELC unless you're Ottawa and he doesn't have rights anyway.
