Seattle fans free public transit for NHL games

Hope this is not old news, just saw an article in a newsletter from the publication Fast Company. Below is the first paragraph of that story for information. If interested you can read the full story at Fast Company's Compass newsletter. Please forgive this techno-illiterate for not attaching a direct link to the published article. Free public transit, what a concept.

In 2021, Seattle will have a new hockey team. And when hockey fans head to a game at the new arena where the team will play, they could choose to sit in some traffic on the freeway and pay for parking downtown, or they could hop on a bus or light rail—completely free of charge. NHL Seattle (the team doesn’t have a name yet) will be the third sports franchise in the country to offer free public transit to those going to games, as a way to ease traffic congestion in the city, increase access for fans, and do something good for the environment.

Don't know how the details and logistics but "free" transit to the game is intriguing . I hope Seattle becomes our Buffalo when it comes to Canucks road games. Will definitely head to a game there when the Canucks visit them!

I'd like to see some organized fan trips to Seattle by bus you can sign up for. I sold my car when I moved here because I don't really need it in a city with a rapid transit system, so it would be cool to be able to go down to a game like that.

I just did a quick search, the Clipper terminal is 15 min walk away from the Arena. Being from Victoria, this is great info, as I will definitely be going down there for games.

How exactly do they know that people will be "going to the games"? Is the bus/train going to the arena DIRECTLY? Do the patrons just tell the driver they're going there? Totally curious. I mean, just because you wear a jersey doesn't necessarily mean you'll be going to the arena itself.

On second thought, maybe they have to show tickets.

My guess is there will be a free shuttle within the area/designated route to pick up fans to the game.

I guess that makes a lot of sense. Casinos do that even here. I think occasionally the suspension bridge has a shuttle every so often.

The clipper is so expensive though, almost as expensive as flying there.

This is a wise decision ,but how will the cops generate their revenue from all the drunk drivers and fans they catch after the games.

Maybe if you're smart you'll have a designated driver. So the driver and all his buddies, and the people around them have a safe and happy experience?

Makes sense, general tax payers should pay for people to go to hockey games.  :sadno:

No but a small investment in public transit, maybe saves lives? Here on New Years Eve they've been having free transit all night. Pretty sure that's saved a life or two from someone getting behind the wheel when they shouldn't be.

How about the hordes of people just sneaking onto the train in general?

There are lots of unnecessary public services that come out of my tax bill I don’t like but am not going to complain about. It’s just part and parcel with life.

IIRC NHL Seattle posted recently about having their monorail go to the arena directly in the future.
