Sumo In A Corona Time

Here we are in Osaka, & it's time for the annual Sumo Basho. Toughest ticket you'll ever wish for in sporting history!! Indeed, only the invisible sumo ghosts & Gods in attendance today.

Because no one's allowed to attend. Due to Covid19, they're playing out the matches on TV, with nary a soul in attendance. Missus & I at home watching on the tele. Man, this is a strange scenario. We're talking about a sport of religious & cultural significance, with roots like a first dated match of 640AD!

It's such a wonderful live exp, that I've enjoyed twice in recent yrs. Hopefully this damned virus dies out, & we can all go back to a relatively normal day to day. Sad feeling, but admire the authorities/wrestlers in their determined effort to still see the tourney through.

Hope this doesn't happen in hockey. But I trust the athletes to play out the season(hard), even if it's simply for cameras in empty arenas.

Peace & health to all

@Ghostsof1915 Ha, that's awesome Ghosts. Would you believe I've still never seen that particular Bond flick?!

Have you seen "The Yakuza" with Robert Mitchum & Takakura Ken? Highly acclaimed, directed by Sydney Pollack. If you haven't, strongly recommended. There's a youtube interview w/Pollack, just looked it up, entitled: The Yakuza 1974 Promises To Keep . Only about 20 mins

Watched it a yr or two back..was pretty cool.

& I hope some day you attend a Basho w/lovely Akiko-san too!

Unfortunately, I think this will be inevitable for our sporting events over here as well, Nux. Pretty sad but I guess all necessary precautions need to be in place to restrict the spread of this miserable virus.

Be safe my friend.

It's one of my favourite Bond movies because of:

- Toyota 2000 GT.

- Akiko Wakabayashi

- Mie Hama

Interesting side note. Tsai Chin who plays the girl in Hong Kong, was also in Casino Royale 2006 as the poker player against LeChiffre, when she was much older.

Holy smokes, how did I miss this post when it first came out? I'm just starting to catch up on the March Basho of this year after missing the last few/several due to reasons... There's a noticeable difference in the participants (as far as being up or demoted). And yes, watchin it without the crowd looks and sounds weird.

Have to admit that my favourite sumo is/was Chiyonofuji (Mitsugu Akimoto, sadly now deceased).

Take care over there.  :)

SUMO UPDATE! :^)

Missus & I just lazin' at home, late Sun aft, & we turned on some TV Sumo. The July tourney, which is always held in nearby Nagoya. Today was day 15, last day of tourney. It was quite exceptional, as the last two fighters had perfect 14-0 records, thus were fighting for the whole enchilada. This hadn't occurred for 9 yrs, apparently.

Lo & behold, famous, 36 yo Yokozuna(highest ranking), Hakuho won his 45th(!!!) ever Emperor's Cup. The record had been 32, which he completely smashed yrs back. The battle-hardened Mongolian had taken a yr & a half off, having been through recent knee surgery. Darn impressive.

Lastly, the arena was only about half-full, as things aren't back to normal quite yet. But was a pleasure to see fans again in the stands. Peace from Osaka...

I got strangely into sumo after working closely with a sumo athlete a few years back. Incredible sport really.

Brutal sport in regards to training and diet, which makes their life expectancy 20 years shorter than the avg Japanese male.

Tough stuff for these large fellas.

The Yakuza starring Robert Mitcham is an awesome movie.

After watching that movie my friends and I started to "sleeve up" instead of getting individual tattoos.

Plates from our chests and back would merge with our arms.

We had never seen tattooing like that before we saw that movie.
