Playoffs or no??

Can someone provide a definite answer as to whether we are in or not if the season indeed ends today?  NHL.com listed us out, but we have more wins.  Preds has more RW, but fewer wins total, does anyone know the real answer??

Nobody can provide that answer as the NHL hasn't decided yet what they will do.  Even the playoff format itself is up in the air.

Here's a good video on Sportsnet about it:

Most people think the NHL would use point %.......we'd take third

It definitely makes the most sense they would use point %, in which case we would make it as the third seed in the Pacific, but as other have said, it's all quite up in the air right now.

Nothing has been determined but this is my guess...

The standings as it currently stands by points.

But in the case where you have teams that are in with more points but also more games played and a lower winning percentage, and teams that are out by points but with a better winning percentage...my guess is they would have a baseball style play-in for the final spot, maybe a best of three or something.

Then business as usual.

I thought it was Regulation Wins...

Lol what a bush league...

How do they not have tie breaker rules in place where every team is aware / on the same page?

How can they have rules in place on how to handle a mid-season worldwide pandemic with no timeline on when they can return to playing games?

Until they actually know when they can play again, they can't make any real decisions on what they are going to do.

@oldnews posted rules in the gdt that never played. Pretty sure it's point percentage to determine playoff seeding in the event the season is ended early.

If today was the end of regular season games it'd make sense to go by point percentage. Especially considering we've played a game or two less than two of the three teams directly in front of us. Unless they can find a way to fix the imbalance of games played that's the way things should go.

They have tie breaker rules in place for during the season that work while games are uneven, with the guarantee that eventually the games would all be even at 82.

With no guarantee that they can finish the regular season, those tiebreaker rules should not be used to determine final standings since games won't equal out.

Whether there are going to be playoffs is seriously in doubt.

Theres no way the season will end as of today..Or will the playoffs be out right cancelled

Just my opinion but don't see the owners allowing either.

Whenever this is over with, things will just start where they left off

I actually like Elliot's suggestion.

Yeah they're going to do everything they can to recoup some of the money they're going to lose and who can blame them..... I hope they recoup it all and then some so the cap goes up next year lol.... that March madness suggestion was interesting; I wonder if that would bring in more money or not though.

Me too.

The one I didn't like was the idea of having a March-madness style single-knockout tournament.  I feel like it makes the regular season worthless and cheapens the accomplishment of winning the Cup.

Other than maybe a play-in round, I wouldn't want any of the regular rounds to go less than best of 5.

I wouldn't want the Stanley Cup awarded in a march madness style tournament. Its the hardest trophy in sports to win for a reason.

And you know the league will opt to go for a plan to determine playoff participants that makes sure Vancouver is out.

What if the break is a couple months. They can't play that deep into the summer and shorten the off season by that much.

point % is such a dumb way to determine who's in whos out..

example if team A played 60 games they have a 25-15-20 record.. with a .583 points percentage.. that's superior to a team 37-22-1 record? .577%... like like i guess all those lost in the OT/shootout is worth more than winning 12 more games

well doesn't that simply indicate bad planning

failing to account for every eventuality??

i mean they did have the spanish flu 100 years ago

isn't this the same nhl management still that was in place back then ?

Your criticism also applies equally to doing it by total points.
