Trade Deadline Discussion:

NASHVILLE, TN

Following 2 embarassing losses to division rivals Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators GM Caboose addressed the media in a fury. "Big changes are coming. Some of these guys don't seem to have what it takes to win in this league." It was a flurry of speculation among NHL in the knows before NHL insider Bobinder Mcinjeet heard that the team would be parting ways with superstar center and team captain Brad Richards. Richards was sent packing to Toronto in exchange for Matt Stajan and the Leafs 1st round draft pick in 2010. Nashville reportedly had a better offer on the table from a western conference team, but elected to take a lesser return to send Richards out east.

Nashville then dealt long time Predator David Legwand to the same Chicago Blackhawks who started this chain of events in exchange for Michal Handzus, and 2 drafts picks in 2010. It was speculated that the team was unhappy with Legwand's offensive contirbutions after signing him to a contract extension last July. Handzus' second stop in Nashville was a shortlived one, as he was dealt to Dallas in a positional move in exchange for right winger Bryan Smolinski.

Bottom 6 grinder and fan favourite Freddy Modin was deemed surplus to requirements in Nashville, and he, alongside Greg Zanon was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick.

With the leadership void in the locker room left by Brad Richards departure, GM Caboose sought to bring in a veteran presence. Defenceman Rob Blake was brought in from Carolina. His stabilizing presence and cup winning resume will surely prove valuable in the Predator's quest for hockey's ultimate prize.

Then, in the blockbuster move of the day, Nashville sent top prospect Colton Gillies, disappointing free agent signing Antii Laaksonen, and 4 draft picks to the Calgary Flames in exchange for superstar winger Jarome Iginla and 4th liner Dominic Moore. Upon Iginla's arrival he was immediately given the Predator's captaincy, a role left recently vacant by Brad Richards. This move is a stunning condemnation of the Predator's leadership core and surely intended to send a message.

Nashville Predator's Post Trade-Deadline Lineup:

Martin Erat - Peter Forsberg - Jarome Iginla

Alexander Radulov - Paul Stastny - Patric Hornqvist

Josef Vasicek - Matt Stajan - Lee Stempniak
Jay McClement - Dominic Moore - Bryan Smolinski

Dion Phaneuf - Shea Weber

Tomas Kaberle - Rob Blake

Alex Goligoski - Kevin Klein

Pekka Rinne

Season Review:

Spoiler

Despite being heavily favoured to once again win the Central Division and make a deep playoff run, the Nashville Predators were beat to the title by upstart Chicago Blackhawks on the last day of the season, and subsequently trounced in 5 games in the first round by the Minnesota Wild. Immediately following the playoff exit, Nashville GM Caboose sounded the alarm. It seems he was incredibly disappointed with the end of the season, and later that week fired head coach Barry Trotz. GM Caboose will take over coaching duties for the 2009-10 season, possibly in hopes of getting a little closer to the action and seeing what issues are plaguing the Predators locker room.

After firing the coach, Nashville made a blockbuster draft day trade, sending Tomas Kaberle, Alexander Radulov, and Pekka Rinne to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for 90 point scorer Corey Perry, and two highly touted prospects D Nick Pageau and C Per-Olof Lundgren, as well as young goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Pageau projects as a top line defenceman, but may still be 2 or 3 seasons away from making an impact at the NHL level. Lundgren looks to be much closer to the finished product, putting together an excellent season in the SHL. Look for him to make a challenge for a roster spot in camp.

It seems Perry was acquired in a bid to make the team harder to play against, as Kaberle and Radulov were deemed too soft for the central division. Perry has been a thorn in the backside of southeast teams since his controversial trade to Atlanta, and looks set to plague the western conference for many years to come.

It wasn't all doom and gloom in Nashville though. GM Caboose specifically signalled out rookie Patric Hornqvist as having an exceptional season, and looks for him to build upon that in an increased role. Young defenceman Alex Goligoski and centerman Paul Stastny both had excellent seasons as well.

Armed with close to 10 million in cap room, Nashville looks to shore up its defensive and goaltending depth in free agency, two positions that were significantly weakened by the blockbuster with the Thrashers.

2007-08 Review:

Spoiler

It was a bitterly disappointing end to the season for the Predators once again, who, despite statistical dominance in every category during their run to the presidents trophy, bowed out of the playoffs in the second round to the eventual cup champion San Jose Sharks. It was a hard fought series, and despite battling back from 3-1 down Nashville was unable to get it done in game 7, succumbing to the Sharks in overtime.

The cap crunch this offseason meant that the Predators will be a totally new team when they hit the ice for camp in Fall. GM Caboose went into the offseason with the goal of re-signing star players Martin Erat and Paul Kariya, and was only able to accomplish one of those tasks, inking franchise forward Martin Erat to a 5 year deal. MVP forward Paul Kariya would not accept another 1 year contract, and will look for a long term home come July 1st.

With Pekka Rinne knocking on the door, Tomas Vokoun's days in Nashville were numbered. The elite goaltender turned in many stellar seasons for the Predators, and GM Caboose wished him the best of luck in Florida, where he joins former Predator Kimmo Timonen in exchange for forward Nathan Horton.

In an audacious 3 way trade, Horton was then flipped to Calgary alongside 2 1st round picks in exchange for superstar defenceman Dion Phaneuf. Ryan Suter, who Phaneuf was brought in to replace, was shuffled to Colorado in exchange for young 2nd line center Paul Stastny. With Stastny's acquisition, it appeared that veteran forward Jason Arnott's days in Nashville were numbered.

Surplus to recquirements, Arnott was traded to his old team the Dallas Stars for veteran winger Petr Sykora. Sykora was then flipped to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2nd round pick and center prospect Ronald Hoehn.

In continuing his bid to get younger, perennial All Star and 60 point defenceman Marek Zidlicky was sent to the struggling Flyers in exchange for young top 4 defenceman Alex Goligoski, and truculent prospect winger Colton Gillies. Goligoski will likely be used in a sheltered role to start his career in Nashville, but could develop into a Zidlicky of the future.

Armed with salary cap space, and needing to replace the irreplaceable Paul Kariya, GM Caboose brokered a deal with the Stanley Cup runners up Boston Bruins, sending young winger Chris Higgins out East in exchange for legendary forward Peter Forsberg. Forsberg will most definitely link up with Brad Richards and Martin Erat, forming likely the best 1st line in the NHL.

Younger, faster, and deeper, this years Predators squad has been completely made over and will continue their quest for the Stanley Cup.

2006-07 Review:

Spoiler

After a disappointing end to the regular season, Nashville was faced with some hard choices to make this summer. The salary cap crunch was inevitable and unfortunately the Predators have had to release superstar D man Kimmo Timonen to unrestricted free agency. To lessen the blow of losing Timonen, GM Caboose sought to add a top pairing defenceman and target Tomas Kaberle.

Kaberle's 40+ points last season on some poor teams leads the Predators to believe he can step into Timonen's shoes. GM Caboose had to pay a pretty price, sending promising young defenceman Dan Hamhuis and top defender for Canada at the World Juniors, Cody Franson.

At the draft, Nashville's underfunded scouting department failed to find any players they deemed worth drafting, so they traded their 1st round pick to Phoenix for prospect forward Peter Mueller and their 2nd round pick to St. Louis for young bottom 6ers Jay McLement and Lee Stempniak.

Mueller projects as a 2nd line playmaker long term for the Predators, and he alongside Patric Hornqvist should hopefully provide some salary cap relief in the future.

McLement and Stempniak will feature on the revamped Predators 4th line, which was a problem area for them last season.
