Kurisu
2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships: Gold: Canada Silver: Sweden Bronze: Czech Republic 4th Place: Russia Leading Scorer: Bohdan Augusta 7GP 2G 8A 11P Best Defenceman: Tomas Cerny 7GP 2G 5A 7P Best Goalie: Jake Allen 6GP 6W 0L 1SO 0.951%SV CAP Players: Tomas Cerny (RD) 7GP 2G 5A 7P The Czech-born defender dazzled at the World Juniors, running the Czech powerplay and playing on the top pairing, racking up over 20 minutes a game. Led all dmen in scoring by 3 points. 5 of his 7 points came on the powerplay. Cerny was rewarded with a bronze medal after a dramatic 4-3 OT win over Russia. Gleb Lukashenko (LW/RW) 4GP 2G 0A P2 Not the best showing for one of the biggest hopes for Belarussian hockey. He missed 2 games with olecranon bursitis, and only scored 2 goals. He did however score the OT winner against Denmark to help Belarus narrowly avoid relegation.

Kurisu
NHL Entry Draft Round 1 Spoiler #7 New York Islanders - Patrik Kaine (RW/LW) - Notre Dame Hounds Height: 6’7” Weight: 213 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Offensive top 6 winger Comparable: Damien Brunner The Islanders shock the world by reaching for the 51st ranked Patrik Kaine. The enigmatic Swiss prospect went 1st overall in the CHL Import draft, but refused to sign with the Barrie Colts. He is blessed with a massive frame and excellent footspeed. His best attributes are his puckhandling and goalscoring abilities. He needs to work on his defensive game and use his size more effectively. A confusing pick to say the least; perhaps justified by the fact that the Islanders don’t have much on the RW outside of Trent Hunter and Rostislav Olesz. He becomes the highest drafted Swiss player of all time. #28 Edmonton Oilers - Weezer Breezer (LW) - SSAC Height: 5’9” Weight: 147 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Elite goalscoring winger Comparable: Brian Gionta The Oilers swing for the fences with the Weezer Breezer, a small winger with gamebreaking goalscoring abilities. Ranked 18th by scouting, Breezer has immense hockey sense and the unteachable ability to score goals. His wristshot and puck control are better than most NHL players. Will absolutely need to bulk up before taking a run at the NHL. The Oilers will hope he can replace the aging Ryan Smyth on the LW. His immediate future is up in the air, as we haven’t heard about any serious college links. Perhaps a pro contract could be coming his way soon? Round 2 Spoiler #35 Tampa Bay Lightning - Octavian Papi-Chulo (LW) - London Knights Height: 6’0” Weight: 180 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Third line two-way winger Comparable: Philippe Bozon Tampa selects the highest drafted French player ever early in the second round. Papi-Chulo moves ahead of his brother Skepta after a solid season in London. The winger is a great skater with a lot of character, and projects as an ideal 3rd liner and penalty killer. Octavian will likely return to London next season, but has a decent shot at making the Lightning, who have no real NHL stars on the LW. #42 Washington Capitals - Mario Balotelli (RW/LW) - HC Bolzano Foxes Height: 6’5” Weight: 209 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: First line sniper Comparable: Dino Ciccarelli Washington take a chance on the Italian badboy, Mario Balotelli. The big winger is full of flash and goalscoring talent, and loves to carry the puck. He would be ranked much higher if it weren’t for serious attitude issues, as he is virtually guaranteed to go to the box every game. He has also gotten in to trouble for skipping practice. A high-risk, high-reward pick for the Capitals. If he pans out, he won’t have much competition on the Capitals RW, and could be a brilliant complement to Alex Ovechkin. #52 Florida Panthers - Corona Virus (LD/RD) - Cornwall Colts Height: 6’1” Weight: 174 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: #3 D, PP QB Comparable: Mike Green The little-known Corona Virus lands in Florida. Oozing with offensive skill and holding world-class speed, Virus is a classic offensive D. Not the best defender, but has good size and will be controlling the puck most of the time. He will be looked at to revitalize an aging Florida blueline, and could make a fantastic partner for Jay Bouwmeester in the future. Virus will join the Boston College Terriers for the coming season. #59 Atlanta Thrashers - Funt Cungus (LW/RW) - Calgary Hitmen Height: 6’2” Weight: 187 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Middle 6 power forward Comparable: Scott Walker Atlanta picks up a classic power forward late in the second round. Cungus is responsible defensively and loves to hit. He has a lot of unrealized offensive potential, and could make a great complimentary winger, or a quality bottom 6 option. He seems like a great fit for Atlanta, who need solid contributors to play behind Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk on the top line. Round 3 Spoiler #65 Chicago Blackhawks - Trumann Coronavirusson (C) - Bjorninn 2 Flokkur Height: 6’4” Weight: 178 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: High-end 2C all-rounder Comparable: Patrik Berglund Iceland’s first NHL draftee goes early in the 3rd to Chicago. Trumann’s best qualities are his elite faceoff skills and deadly wrister. He’s also a great skater and good puck distributor. It’s unclear what the plan is in Chicago, as they already have Jonathan Toews, Henrik Zetterberg, and Patrick Sharp down the middle. Trumann will join HPK in the top Finnish league this season to test his skills in a men’s league. #76 Boston Bruins - Donald Trump (RW/LW) - Valley East Cobras Height: 6’0” Weight: 187 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Middle 6 goalscorer Comparable: Mark Parrish A bit of a wildcard, the Bruins select Trump, who has little experience against solid competition. He possesses incredible skating and a nose for the net. Fundamentally, he’s quite one-dimensional and will need to work on his two-way game to stick at higher levels. He will have plenty of competition, with Phil Kessel, Milan Lucic, and Brad Boyes already on the Bruins. He hasn’t committed yet, but will likely attend Merrimack or St. Lawrence next season. #79 Pittsburgh Penguins - PK’s Toy (RD/LD) - Selkirk Steelers Height: 6’2” Weight: 183 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: 3rd pairing PP specialist Comparable: Marc-Andre Bergeron Pittsburgh takes a flyer on the defensively inept PK’s Toy. Fast, good at reading the play, and loves to stickhandle, Toy is the ideal PP QB. However, he cannot defend well at any level and will struggle to impose himself at even strength. He will try to win a spot running the 2nd unit in Pittsburgh, behind Ryan Whitney. He has committed to North Dakota for the coming season. #83 Dallas Stars - Skepta Papi-Chulo (RW) - Toronto Red Wings Height: 6’2” Weight: 185 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Top 6 goalscorer Comparable: Michael Ryder Perhaps the more talented of the Papi-Chulo brothers, Skepta’s draft status fell after failing to secure a move to Acadie-Bathurst. A classic goalscorer with speed, size, and hockey sense. The only thing holding him back is his poor attitude and workrate. He will likely see his future as Dallas’ 2RW, behind Loui Eriksson. It remains to be seen where he plays next season, perhaps he will finally join Acadie-Bathurst? #87 New York Rangers - Timmy Lord (C/RW) - Oshawa Generals Height: 6’1” Weight: 187 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Middle 6 playmaker Comparable: Kyle Wellwood The New York Rangers pick up natural playmaker Timmy Lord late in the 3rd. Lord has the essentials down, namely passing and faceoffs. Flashy and a competent skater. Will need to learn the defensive game and become more of a goal threat. Faces an uphill battle to make the Rangers, with Cody Hodgson, Brandon Dubinsky, and Ryan Kesler already on the Rangers roster. Will likely return to Oshawa next season, where he will take on a starring role with Cam Fowler. Round 4 Spoiler #105 Edmonton Oilers - Fetty Wap (LW/RW) - USNDTP Height: 6’4” Weight: 187 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Middle 6 sniper Comparable: Lee Stempniak The Oilers take another American winger, this time selecting the bold and brazen Fetty Wap. Great size and wristshot. Needs to be harder on the puck and make use of his frame. Lacks vision. Joins Weezer Breezer as a future option in the Oiler’s aging top 6. Joining the Maine Black Bears for the coming season. #107 Edmonton Oilers - Gleb Lukashenko (LW/RW) - Brandon Wheat Kings Height: 5’8” Weight: 167 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Top 6 skilled winger Comparable: Sergei Samsonov Yet another winger to the Oilers, as they pick up talented Belarussian Lukashenko. The undersized forward is one of the flashiest in the draft, capable of stickhandling in a phonebooth. God-given offensive talent, but serious questions over his workrate and size. Will likely continue his starring role at Brandon while he tries to bulk up. #116 Chicago Blackhawls - Elvis Stojko (RW/C) - Plymouth Whalers Height: 5’11” Weight: 185 lns NHL Ready: No Upside: Top 6 power forward Comparable: Andrew Ladd A potential steal in the 4th round, the Blackhawks pick up a high-intagibles power forward in Stojko. Very strong, loves to hit, and is a menace in front of the net. Needs to gain a quicker stride to play a significant role in the NHL. Has a long road to the NHL, and tough competition when he gets there, with Tuomo Ruutu and Martin Havlat occupying the Blackhawks top 6 RW at the moment. Round 5 Spoiler #125 Tampa Bay Lightning - YoungBoy NeverBrokeAgain (C) - Sarnia Sting Height: 7’1” Weight: 352 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Monster 1C Comparable: Keith Tkachuk The most intriguing prospect of the year finally goes to Tampa. YoungBoy could set records for the tallest and heaviest player in NHL history, along with being the first Polynesian ever drafted. Relishes in crushing his opponents with his freak-of-nature frame. Has a bullet of a slapshot and decent offensive instincts. Competent defensively. Doubts exist over his attitude and mobility at the NHL level. Will have lots of time to develop, with Brad Richards, Andy McDonald, and Vinny Lecavalier already on the Lightning roster. #132 Pittsburgh Penguins - Tomas Cerny (RD) - Bili Tygri Liberec Height: 6’1” Weight: 180 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: #3 offensive D Comparable: Marek Zidlicky The Penguins finally pick up Tomas Cerny, who was expected to go much higher after his star-making world junior performance. Cerny is a pure playmaker, and will absolutely punish teams on the PP. A natural leader. Lacks any sort of physical game, and is only okay defensively. Cerny will compete with fellow draftee PK’s Toy to be the next Penguins PP QB. Cerny could finally make the move to North America next year, with the Kitchener Rangers holding his Junior rights. #150 Buffalo Sabres - Jackson Hunter (RW) - Calgary Hitmen Height: 6’0” Weight: 180 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Physical bottom 6 forward Comparable: Jordin Tootoo The Sabres take a chance on power forward Jackson Hunter. A very strong and physical player, will need to carve out a career by going to the net and battling on the boards. Lacks the top end skill or speed to be a gamebreaker. On the bright side, the Sabres have won 3 of the last 4 Stanley Cups, and will definitely need some cheap and hungry players to play depth roles. Round 6 Spoiler #156 Philadelphia Flyers - Darth Vader (LD/RD) - Seattle Thunderbirds Height: 5’11” Weight: 171 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Top 4 offensive D Comparable: Ian White The Flyers take a shot on small but dynamic defenceman Darth Vader. A top level playmaker and team player. Very solid defensively compared to his peers. Absolute force on the PP. Will be attempting to break in to a stacked Flyers defence that includes Victor Hedman, Erik Karlsson, and Dan Girardi. Led all draft-eligible dmen in CHL scoring. A mystery how he fell so far. Undrafted Spoiler Kai Lung (C/LW) - Charlottetown Abbies Height: 6’2” Weight: 198 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: Middle 6 playmaker Comparable: Glen Metropolit Offensive centre Kai Lung failed to entice any NHL scouts, perhaps due to lack of exposure. He has a great frame and excels at passing and skating. Has good puck control and faceoff skills. A lack of defensive game doesn’t help his case. He will need to find a more challenging place to play hockey next year if he wishes to pursue his longshot NHL dream. A.M. Aggin (C) - Penticton Vees Height: 6’6” Weight: 213 lbs NHL Ready: No Upside: 4th line energy guy Comparable: Adam Mair A marginal prospect, passed over in both the import and NHL drafts. Has great size, but not much skill to back it up. Decent on faceoffs and a smart passer with respectable footspeed. Needs to get better at many aspects of the game. His best bet is to keep grinding in the minor leagues and embrace a checking role. A very long shot for the NHL. 2
