[ Discussion]. What will happen to Free Agency Date if we are playing Hockey in July?

So with the potential of playoff hockey in July,  do the masterminds of this league look to push us into playoff hockey immediately?

July 1st is a date that is far more important than Draft day in June.

Will the league look to players and NHLPA to waive or amend their contracts?

Does this potential action open the door to other amendments between the NHL and NHLPA as a bargaining chip?

..Or will this cancel a season?

Thoughts ladies and gents?

It’s definitely something to ask and think about. Surely we want Markstrom to be in net for the playoffs but with the way things are the NHL and NHLPA must have some sort of courtesy agreement to extend the contracts until the season is complete. For TanMan, Tofu and Marky we need them for the Stanley Cup Ballroom Blitz.

If they move to an early online draft based on pts percentage, my guess would be they just move right into playoffs and the UFA season starts immediately after that, so sometime in late September-ish? maybe 1st week of October.

So then I wonder if we are rolling straight into the 20 -21 season Jimmy..  camps are normally in Sept with pre-season , then regular Season in October.

I still think we cancel the season.   It’s getting to close to next season,  and the “start up”of the economy is going to be a mess.

They still haven’t curved this thing down..   I see a huge Re-bound of this Virus I the U.S.

It sounds like the NHL and the NHLPA are already working closely together on all contingency plans.  The player salaries are tied to the 50% of hockey related revenue mark.  If there are no revenues, escrow goes way up and the players' take-home pay goes way down.

I think you will see that whatever the solution is, it will be done as a partnership between the league and the players.

I don't see 7 game rounds. I see much quicker rounds.

Quarterfinals and semifinals might be best 2 out of 3

semifinals might be best 3 out of 5

finals might reain best 4 out of 7

bad off season to be hitting free agency

no money as limited revenues

cap may be going down significantly

so free agency may not be a meaningful thing anyway

maybe they can just ignore it

and not schedule it this off season

or leave it to 1 week before training camp opens for the next season

most ufas will have resigned with their existing teams by then

I think that is likely too, but I wonder if they really push to avoid it.  Shortened rounds mean there will be a giant * beside the cup winner.  A shortened regular season makes the cup winning team 100% legit with minimal controversy.  To me Bettman will look to shorten both regular seasons to preserve the playoffs in both seasons.  That will require existing contracts to be extended for this year automatically (No issue since they have been paid for not playing) and free agency will sit in the logical middle of both shortened seasons.

There will be an * beside the cup winner no matter what. For instance, if the games are played in 4 arenas only, then those 4 teams will have home ice advantage. Imagine a Stanley Cup Finals where the games are played all in Edmonton ,and Edmonton is in the finals? Lots of problems here. Also the time off has allowed some injured teams to heal, while healthier teams will not be able to take advantage of it as much. I think the asterix is pretty much a done deal at this point. As long as Round 4 is 7 games long I dont see it being a problem.

League made it know that if a city is chosen as hub the home team would not necessarily be based there - ie Edmonton might not be playing in Edmonton.

There's no fans in the stands so there's not necessarily home ice advantage.   They talk of playing 3 games per day - need 4 locker rooms and teams would be moving in and out including the home team.

Players have already been paid for the entirety of this season including playoffs.  So really they owe us fans and the owners to do whatever is asked of them safely to finish the season.  Any pending UFA has just had three gigantic pay-days a lot of which would sustain an average family comfortably throughout the pandemic until vaccination.    Should we worry about UFAs who won’t get paid come July 1?  No.  Not at all. They will get their contracts when things are back to normal for undoubtedly.   What’s the league minimum again?  Hmmmm.  Poor MT and BT all they have to do is post stupid things they have to do with their big huge head dad.   Whoops sorry. They aren’t close to UFAs yet.   Sorry for the sarcasm but really is this even topic worthy?   And is it really more “far more important” then draft day?   Not to me at least.  Some of those kids signing right away would have really changed their families fortunes.  Instead we have to wait awhile as fans to see who goes where and for how much overpayment.

You’re absolutely correct - especially in one thing where playoff or fringe playoff teams like ourselves will now almost all be completely healthy where as down the stretch both sides of the above were hurting or not hurting which definitely would have affected the actual standings.   At the very least the league needs to play equal games before making a list of playoff teams.  Which means we get four games or so with teams that are also in our situation.  If say they go to only 72-73 games then some teams will have to play teams they wouldn’t normally have to play again which also puts and asterisk on the season.   IMO they should choose non-playoff cities so there is no home ice advantage.   When the Oilers won their first cup they drove around NYI hotel and wouldn’t stop honking their horns - and for that year only they altered the playoff schedule to save on flights and to this day the NYI players say it wasn’t fair (and it wasn’t - they aren’t the only sore losers in Stanley Cup history and they have a better reason then the refs to blame).  So yes I’m agreeing with you - no matter what happens playoffs or no playoffs this year will go down in history with a big asterisk.   The same way any goalie that played for shoot-outs  deserves ones too.  Luongo, Lundqvist and MAF also don’t deserve the same respect as Cujo, Belfour, Osgood, Sawchuk, Broduer, Roy and anyone else who had 400 career wins post shoot-out.    Changed the subject but as far as asterisks go that’s the biggest failure in the history books do far.    Well maybe everyone who is living through this deserves a bit asterisk too.  You and I and everyone else on this site and in the world today too.

I had not heard that they had been paid for the entirety of the season.. I had heard that some were perhaps differed on pay waiting to find out if the season would progress.

My questions were based as to see if the NHLPA might use the fact that a contract clause stipulating a deadline might which to be opened by the league for negotiation or agreement.

I get where your coming from.

But facts are facts..  And if what your saying is truth or assumption I’m still not sure.

The draft , by all accounts I will proceed on its speculated date in early June.

So has the NHL ended the regular season?

Is the draft pick order written?

Picking players that will potentially not play any part of what’s left in this season.. is just a moot point.  It a what it is

.. But UFA. .  Could potentially be contract obligated crutch if anything remains to be played of this season.

personally,  I would rather see the season end now..  No Cup winner.  .., and a solid plan and preparation for the next season begin.

Players salaries end after the last regular season game in each year.  Reason why they (players) have no risk by going on strike before the start of the playoffs (as they'll only be losing some bonus money).  Also reason why the owners lockout the players before the start of the season if they think they'll go on strike.
