Yeah, and he was never the same after the knee injury that ended his ironman streak.  From then on, he was still a very good player, but he had a very Dave Babych-like transition to defensive player with respectable offense.

I have an old Young Stars book that includes Modano and Linden from the early 90’s that predicted that both these guys would eventually end up in the HHOF.   That’s how good Linden was - it’s not often that a player has his best offensive seasons before he’s 24.   He’d already established himself as dominant force by then - one of the leagues youngest and most respected Captains. Moving to the center position was a selfless act and he took it on with moxy

When he came back he also embraced a bottom six role when his points per 60 was still pretty decent.   PK specialist...scored a lot more goals then Cooke over the same period and in a similar role.

Lanz

Rypien

That should do it.  Lanz looks to be finally getting his due, about 10 spots too late ... but it is what it is.  Next up Murzyn guys/gals - played with us until he retired (almost the entire decade and lost half a year to a lockout ) and did what Tanev did in good times and bad...beat Lumme and Babych for a Pratt award which at the time and until the Sedins came around (Ward too they tied that year) a team best plus 34 which also is better then a lot of other franchises records ... only a minus once in the dark ages of Keanen goalie graveyard era (minus one) - fought some of the toughest guys of his era and a regular combatant of a tier below that would whoop the best that’s left ... blocked shots without Kevlar and special gear (or wood shoved down his shin pads like Ludwig did) ... did anything and everything for his team to win....regularly had an A on his sweater...etc.   Might be the last time he’s in the top 50 with the new core emerging and a deserving choice at this point.

Yes I’d agree - definitely would have Sandlak ahead of Cooke.   Ha ha.   It’s ok Cocunuts - in trying not to start anything (again I think ha ha) but I can’t help defend the other players on this list - and some yet to get in (Sandlak is a perfect example) when it’s suggested Cooke should make it in before the rest and really it’s not even close simply on a games played note...Aucoin is another guy I had as 50 in my original list who slipped to 51 when I added Tanev - not everyone can make it in.

These things are subjective - and I’d expect that a lot of people can’t help but weight those they’ve watched higher then things like games played, how good they actually were/are - impact to the fan base etc.   Butcher had to wait a very long time to get in too...Murzyn is still outside looking in.  Both held important positions for us and were part of the leadership group while here.  Lanz was too.   Fraser was a top scorer on our team and a top fighter in the league at the time.  And part of a run to the final where he scored 10 points and also had 98 PIMS...

It's all good, disagreement is a good thing, particularly when we're on a hockey forum with very little going on in the hockey world. I respect those making cases for older players, this would be a boring process if we all just shook hands and agreed on the ranking, voting, ect.  Everyone won't get in, but that's what honorable mentions are for.

There's definitely a lot to consider and take in, and we've all got our biases and ways of seeing things.

I wonder what we'll do once the list is done, we're almost there!

You bet.  Very good point.  If we all agreed on everything then life and this forum would get dull pretty quickly.   I do appreciate others viewpoints and as a result have altered my own viewpoint to allow for changes in my personal rankings  ... also like to echo what 189lbs mentioned a day or so ago - a big clap for AJ for starting this thread in the first place - very grateful for it and the others who have daily or occasionally contributed.   It’s been a great distraction and miles ahead of looking on NHL.com to get an idea of when things will start up again.   My only disappointment is it’s going to stop soon - and on the flip side the five years or so we’d have to wait to do a proper do-over given who’s just starting or only played a few years....hope to see yours and everyone else’s posts then too.

Yeah, once Lanz is in I've got Murzyn and Fraser neck and neck.  Then probably Schmautzy but the truth is, once Murzyn and Fraser are in, pretty much my entire 51-60 range isn't even available for voting.  I have to start voting for guys I have in the 60s and not the 50s.

Making it into my 60s is still a stellar achievement, but it's weird how that entire range is blank in the nominations.

Malhotra

Going this route... Just because Brock should be #50 in my estimate and Malholtra should be nominated somewhere around now.  However, (someone here mentioned Pat Quinn) total somehow forgot about him!  He should have been in here top 50 as well... Hard decisions.

Love that second shot, while Cooke is out, as he’s hitting the ice.
Cheap shot, for a cheap shot L’artiste.

Sorry did I miss something? Is this Top 50 pittsburgh penguins? Am I on the wrong message boards? The cooker got suspended ONE time for a "cheap play" as a Canuck and it was self defense because a 6'6 behemoth was coming after him and he speared him rightfully so.

Matt Cooke is 19th all time in Canucks games played... 8th all time in Shorties... have some respect for his decade in our orginization. He gave us some incredible years

He was listed 5'11 but was 5'10 at best... he was constantly attacked by players far bigger than him.

His playoff heroics speak for themselves

He was drafted in the 6th round in 1997 and spent a decade with our organization. Something half the guys on this list didn't do.

Anyways, nominating Rick Rypien!
