Popular Post peaches5
https://www.nhl.com/news/vancouver-canucks-christopher-tanev-contract-update/c-317110104 Quote Christopher Tanev said he wants to re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks, who want to keep the possible unrestricted free agent defenseman. "I've been here now for 10 years and I've loved every minute of it," Tanev told Sportsnet in remarks published Friday. "There's definitely a trust between me and management and the ownership group, which has been awesome to me. Whether it's one year or many years, I'd love to play my whole career here. Who knows what's going to happen. But I love it here, I want to stay here …" Tanev scored 118 points (22 goals, 96 assists) in 514 NHL games since joining Vancouver as a college free agent in the offseason prior to 2010-11. This season, the 30-year-old scored 20 points (two goals, 18 assists), often paired with defenseman Quinn Hughes, who is a contender for the Calder Trophy given to the NHL rookie of the year. "There are guys who really help other players along, and I would say Chris Tanev is one of those guys," Vancouver general manager Jim Benning said. "I'd like to try to figure out a way to bring Chris back because I think he's a good leader and our younger players look up to him. He was an excellent mentor to Quinn Hughes. On the ice, they played really well together. I think they help each other." Tanev said he is aware that with the NHL season paused since March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, the free agent market this offseason will be different than others (his five-year contract was set to expire June 30). He said he might be willing to sign a one-year contract and then revisit the situation after next season. "You have to deal with what gets thrown your way," Tanev said. Vancouver (36-27-6, .565 points percentage) finished seventh in the Western Conference and will play the Minnesota Wild (10th, 35-27-7, .558) in the best-of-5 Qualifying Round of the NHL Return to Play Plan. The winner will reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tanev played every game for the Canucks this season but injured his knee in the final game before the pause. He said he needed about two weeks to recover and will be ready when play resumes. A date or location has not been announced. "I think the team is going in the right direction, and if we come back to play this year, I think we're going to have a real good shot at competing and going far," he said. "I'd like to be part of that in the future." This was out last night and no one posted it...smh. Edited June 6, 2020 by peaches5 3 1 8

Crabcakes
Tanev's playing this like an open book. Would love to have him back. Again, once we know the cap going forward, a lot of business can get done league wide. I imagine that expiring contracts have to be renewed before they can play after June 30. C'mon Bettman, look at your calendar, it's June already, figure it out!
RetroCanuck
I don't really care about the $ amount but we cant be signing him long term. 3 years at 5M is what Id want. Would be awesome to have him back, especially if he remains healthy. Hughes-Tanev Tryamkin-Myers Edler-Rafferty Brisebois-Benn Fantenberg walks. Stecher's rights + Motte traded for Kerfoot
Popular Post BoKnows
I'd rather see Tanev go, and resign Toffoli. 2 3
stawns
the good news is, because of the pandemic and massive hit to the revenue, salaries for the next year or two are going to be depressed and they might get a good bargain on a guy like Tanev. Ultimately, the Canucks don't have the depth on d to let a guy like CT walk if it's possible to retain him. 3
Popular Post Ghostsof1915
With the arrival of Hughes, for the first time Edler and Tanev don't have to carry the freight. So it doesn't surprise me he's had an outstanding year. There's question marks on his durability (It's not the years, it's the mileage as Indiana Jones says). And how much cap space does the team really have. Who can be traded? Who stays? As much as I like Tanev as the good foot soldier. Good team guy, and never takes a shift off. I'd rather see Toffoli stay and take a risk on some rookies on the back end. Edited June 6, 2020 by Ghostsof1915 2 1 1
JM_
man if Tanev is willing to do something like a 1 year extension at his current salary of 4.45 that would be ideal, and then wait to see what a new CBA and post-covid life brings. Certainly sounds like he's open to a number of things and gets the reality of the league right now. It would mean goodbye to Stecher but I think thats already in the cards, we can't keep him at this current QO anyway and keep Toffoili and Marky. Plus we have enough 6/7 depth guys in Utica now to take his place. I think Stecher won't get a QO and be allowed to walk as a free agent. 1

He's another guy I don't want to see go, I like seeing a Richmond kid do well. But as good as he has been for the team. Unless some of the veteran forwards have some crazy increase in demand. I'm afraid you're right the team will probably let him walk.

But he is one of those guys thats a solid bottom pair bet that can fill in briefly in the top 4 for injuries, etc. so I do think he'll get a job somewhere else like Hutty, just for less money than he's making now.

Ain't there some guff about not being able to re-sign UFA's to a 1 yr with approaching ED?!..I forget these details. On Tanev..pure class. But I def want re-signing for Markstrom, TT & the Tree to be top-priority.

I thought they just had to wait until Jan 1 in the last year of the deal to do an extension, and maybe some cap circumvention rules, but if it was just 1 year at his current salary that wouldn't be a thing. I'm not clear on all the cap calculation rules tho.
Ghostsof1915
You know it would be awfully nice of the NHL. Considering Luongo was from a previous GM, who is no longer in hockey. To make the franchise still has to pay the recapture penalties to the player(s) and buyouts. But have it not go against the salary cap. There's $4 million in cap relief right there. Do you think Baer will agree to mutully terminate his contract so he can get a fresh start somewhere else in the NHL?

He could walk, but he could also opt to take a deal. After seeing Hutton get an offer to stick (Below QO), then head to free agency and basically get a step above minimum in a 'good' year for contracts, there might be some appetite to just have some stability and a place to play that wants you. Or he could bounce and try his luck in a down year for revenue and contracts. I can't say as I'm not him and I don't know him, I'd imagine that it's not too far from his agents' mind, if not his.

Now we just need to sneak the words "compliance buyout" in there and we'd be pretty good to go.

This pipe dream has some pretty potent stuff inside it The NHL isn't about being nice - especially towards the Canucks Baer i doubt would get rid of guaranteed money, especially in this uncertain world, He ht a gold mine with that contract and knows it, as no one was interested

He should have been in Van and would have been a solid two way player who could move up and down the lineup and probably put up 40ish points in the process.
