Vegas named NHL hub city when play resumes

If Ontario  is starting to get a handle on this virus, doesn't it make a whole lotta sense to just keep it all in Canada?  Vancouver (or Edmonton) and Toronto?  The US is a sh..show with the denial and utter lack of leadership, Where re-opening up certain States is more of a political act than a health and safety action.  Add to that the protests, and the Corona Virus is not going away soon down there.

Does that just make too much sense, or Is it a case that Bettman simply thinks it wouldn't be good for the game in the US to have an all Canadian cities format?  I don't see how that would be make much difference with no fans, and teams playing away from their home towns anyways and it is strictly a TV event.  Once everyone passes the 14 day quarantine here, there would be no cross border travel at all.  In a country that at least has some kind of consistent coordinated plan.

Many of the players will have very little interest in bringing their families back from Europe to NA for 3 months  to quarentine in a hotel in a country with high levels of covid.

Essential service ?  Really....  you crack me up.

The league is trying to complete the playoffs also at the players' request.  For those reluctant to return there will apparently be an opt out option.

It affects more than just owners/players when a 5 billion dollar league is shut down.  Teams have cut back staff salary (including the Canucks), furloughed employees or even fired them.  Media is also letting people go - there's no sports to cover.  Hotels/restaurants aren't getting that income either.  There is less tax revenue when the league is not up and running and people losing their jobs are probably filing for unemployment.

As for hockey in the summer, that might become the new normal.  The networks believe it would increase viewership to start the season later.  Hockey is competing with too many major sports in October.  The league needs to agree on a new US TV deal.  With the losses piling up adjusting the dates of the season could be part of it.

I agree with everything you posted... but to call NHL hockey an essential service is really not correct.

NHL players can go on strike. Essential services are not allowed to strike.

Really think there will be players that are not working out properly....  going back will be a health risk / safety issue for some of them.

Many of them are probably really feeling like this season is over.  Time to take mental break...  start training hard in late July for next year....

Then don’t.

Lots of fans and more importantly the NHL and the majority of players want to.

They’ll be kept very safe otherwise they won’t vote to return. If they’re willing to accept a small risk to resume their season then that’s all that matters.

Ill be moving my tv to the backyard next to the barbecue. Bring on some summer hockey!

Austin Mathews just tested positive for Covid.     Fans are  being  selfish about wanting some sports  entertainment  to quickly restart to provide some entertainment.....  NHL hockey players will vote on any restart and the majority will rule.  Apparently it is too important for just team reps to vote... rumor is that all players will vote.

Covid 19 is a serious risk to all of us and to our economy.   The restart needs to be slow and steady.  NHL hockey is NOT an essential service and  really needs to wait until it can be restarted safely.

Not essential but people are looking for things to watch.  Sporting events are drawing new viewers.  Not all might stay once their preferred sport is back on but getting exposure can draw new fans and the NHL could use it.

Most players have not entered phase 2 of the NHL's protocol.  It's significantly more restrictive than what players can do outside of it.  No contact, no more than 6 on the ice at the same time, etc.

In Minnesota ice is not back on at the Wild's facilities because players based in Minnesota prefer to make their own arrangements.  It's the state with the most NHLers - cf the Beauty League participants.  Players are skating all over town including Boeser.

Several players who have entered phase 2 have tested positive.  It seems improbable that the players who are outside the protocol are all virus free and they are following far less stringent rules.  They are more at risk in that setting than in the NHLs phase 2 protocol.

Next season won't start before 2021.  Several owners question whether the league should even resume without fans in the stands.  It's unlikely that they would give up this season and lose well over 1 billion and then play next season without fans in the stands.  TV revenue is worth 650M per Renaud Lavoie but they need revenue of 5 billion to operate.  It's not really viable without fans in the stands.  Completing this season will allow them to mitigate their losses.

Really looking like this season is a total bust......

The Phillies confirmed they are dealing with a coronavirus outbreak at their spring training facility in Clearwater, Fla.

And according to ESPN, the Blue Jays have also shut down their facility in nearby Dunedin, Fla., after a player recently showed symptoms of COVID-19 =

Which will be determined by professionals not us.
