D Alex Edler
LW Colin Stuart
C Paul Stastny
D Matt Hunwick
2014 Conditional 2nd
In this deal you have a lot of various intangibles that might make a deal appealing on both sides, with some assumed risk. I see Paul Stastny and Alex Edler sharing similar ballpark value to one another despite Edler's recent struggles if you consider the fact that Stastny is a pending UFA beyond this year and Edler has 5 years remaining at a 5M cap hit, which is manageable for a player that possesses his skill set.
Colorado deals from a position of strength at centre and deals who I think is their most expendable middleman (given the emergence of Duchene, Mackinnon's talent level and O'Reilly's great two way play) and gets a type of defenseman that are generally quite difficult to acquire.
Vancouver also takes on the remaining contract of Matt Hunwick (1.6M cap hit) to sweeten the pot a little for Colorado who they could actually possibly get some use out of, given the loss of Edler in the defensive corps. If he proves useless, oh well, he's a UFA at year's end and was just a short term cap dump without any future ramifications. The conditional 2nd is also in there just due to the fact that Stastny is a pending UFA as well, however I don't see re-signing him to be an issue for Vancouver. He could add a ton of flexibility to Vancouver's top 6 and really make their seemingly anemic offence a tad bit more dynamic. Obviously this deal would first hinge on Edler waiving his NTC to go to Colorado, but there are worse hockey cities to be than Denver and he'd be getting an opportunity to shine on a team headed nowhere but up.
Anyways, just a potentially intriguing proposal that crossed my mind.
