Stanley Cup headed for Vancouver, diverted to Toronto

This is pretty awesome. Reuters reports that Stanley Cup custodian Mike Bolt checked the trophy in at a New Jersey airport Sunday en route to Vancouver for a charity event, but Air Canada staff screwed up and sent it to Toronto by mistake. No word yet on if Brian Burke was involved, but who would put it past him?

This is just the latest bizarre event involving the Stanley Cup. It was first awarded in 1893, and since then, has been drop-kicked onto the Rideau Canal, used as a geranium planter, used to burn the mortgage papers for Madison Square Garden, urinated in (by Red Kelly's infant son and the Patrick brothers, apparently, in separate incidents), used as a birdbath, used as a baptismal font, slept with, tossed into pools, used to eat popcorn, stolen, used as a feeding trough for a horse, placed upside down by Def Leppard, and abandoned on the side of the road, among other things. You don't get that kind of history with most trophies, and this is pretty mild in the grand scheme of things. Still, it's pretty funny that Air Canada managed to lose the Stanley Cup and sent it to Toronto by mistake.

(Thanks to Richard Deitsch, Jason McIntyre and Ty Duffy for finding the story).

The Cup certainly has been through a lot. I also read a while back that Derek Meech of the Detroit Red Wings showered with it when he won it. To each their own I guess...

Indeed. Amazing how much has gone on with it over the years. You'd think they'd be more restrictive these days, but many of those incidents took place in the last decade or so.

More restrictive? You want athletes who have just won the toughest championship in all of professional sports, to NOT have some fun with the trophy at the end of the season? Let them be for crying out loud! It's not like they can't afford to buy a new one if they break it.
