  1. Perhaps because... and I know this sounds crazy... his boss looked at his body of work and came to the conclusion that he has done, and continues to do, a good job?

  4. To me it looked like JB was somewhat handcuffed trying to build around the Sedins when he first got here....with the Sedins gone, the handcuffs are off...and this past offseason alone is reason for an extension.

  5. It’s funny how Gillis gets a pass because he was chasing a cup when he misses on Booth or Ballard or Kassian or Pahlsson but JB going after a young former 3OA in Gudbranson during a rebuild (which Guddy could have been a part of) is somehow egregious. I don’t actually blame Gillis for most of those moves, because most of them made sense at the time. It’s just funny how JB generally doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt on a lot of his moves. Guddy, of course, reminding us of Willie Mitchell who Gillis let walk upon his acquisition of Ballard.. who cost Grabner (STILL scoring 27

  7. More about the draft from the interview: Q: And how did you sleep the night before the draft? A: Not bad. I also had two interviews in the draft day – Vancouver was first and Florida second. Good conversations. That was pretty interesting with Canucks. I met a psychologist, very nice lady. I was given paper and pencil and asked to draw church, construction and house. I did my best, spent about an hour. She divided the paper with my drawing in three parts and said – this is past, present and this is future. And it did not matter at all how good my drawings were ha-ha. I don’t e

  9. Very happy with this, JB earned his extension with how hard he worked this TDL to get a deal (nobody was interested in anything outside our core), then switched lanes into going for it at the draft, made the right pick at 10 (BPA) and a slew of forwards, very strategic given if we hit on one or two they take less time then defenseman and will become important adds in two or three years (including what we already have) as cheap replacements for the Beagles, Rousells, LE’s and Sutters on the team ... Added a good top six Swiss Army knife to the top six on a good cap hit for four yea

  10. This is Part 2 answering the most popular question: Why did his performance drop so much in the second half of the last season (before the draft)..? Q: You seem to play too much last season. And probably because of that the world junior championship (WJC) has not been successful for you. What moment did you realize that it got tough for you? A: My fatigue was coming gradually. Unfortunately, it affected my play in the worst possible time. This happened during playoffs of WJC. I could not do much in the preliminary round. And in the quarter-final game against Belarus I had a ha

  11. The fact the people who I expected to be the most upset and over dramatic are in fact upset and over dramatic makes me like this all the more. Since Benning took over we've shed almost 9 total years off the rosters average age, over $39 million in aging contracts that couldn't be traded and assembled arguably the deepest and most skilled prospect pool this organization has ever seen. Yes. I like this. Almost as much as the tears on hf forums and irrational reactions from royalty here

  12. Really great to hear! I think JB has done a great job this off season and stockpiling on great draft picks the last few years. With an extension there, we know there won't be any panic moves in order to just make the playoffs.

  13. I know this has been said before, but Benning has built the best prospect pool/young core this franchise has ever seen, and he has earned the opportunity to see his rebuild through.

  14. So because we don't agree with you we're blind and mockworthy? If the rest of the world mocks us that reflects more on them than us. I had/have faith in both men. I accept that there are ebbs and flows, peaks and valleys. That these men are working with a "roster" of men who are expected to perform at a top level over the duration of a season. And that things can factor in that impact that. So looking at how a team "does" is hardly a marker...it's an overall picture that really is complex. Some take over roles in better positions than others, some will have players "availabl

  15. I am hard pressed to agree with the missed on OJ and Virt. The jury is still out on OJ, he had a great start to the season in Utica last year and was primed to be called up mid season and probably would have stuck so he's just behind in his developement due to injurey, not a miss by any standards and expect him in the line up this season for sure. Jake is developing slower then we would have all wanted but what he brings to the table and with expectations of a break out season with mentors like Miller and Ferland pushing him I think we need to hold judgement on Jake until this season is done.

  20. Ha ha. Most impact NHLers spend a year at most in the AHL if they play there at all. Based on who wins the cup in the AHL each year and who wins the actual cup it means nothing at all. The College system and Euro teams mean a lot more then they used to in developing players - you have to consider age (the gap year - who’s still in Juniors) and the entirety of each piece when looking at a teams depth. Personally my favourite indicator of a teams future success is looking at the best 21 and unders in the world - currently we rank 3rd when it comes to players under 21 and under. How good w

  21. While I'm sure he's learned some things along the way, this sentiment that he's so vastly 'improved' is a bit misguided IMO. A lot of his so called 'bad' moves have been far more circumstantial than simply 'bad/learning on the job'. His only really 'bad' moves of any consequence are the Eriksson signing (duh) and the poor handling of Gudbranson (which he appears to have largely corrected with a good trade for Pearson... we'll see more this season). Players like MDZ etc need to be viewed through the lens of what they were intended for. People seem to act like we brought

Find something better to do with your time please. On topic, I think JB deserved this. Congrats to him and anyone that can't see that this team is trending in the right direction needs to really give their heads a shake. They've addressed mostly all of their needs and they should be fighting for a playoff spot this year.

  23. Burke at the time was considered the best GM in the league. He built the Sedin team with the exception of Luongo, and we were on the up and up during his time in ANA. That team also happens to be probably my favourite cup winning team the past 20 years or so. He built an old school team around a highly skilled core of players that had made the final but needed an identity shift. They lost to NJ who punished every team along the way - Stevens killing guys every round with perfectly legal hits at the time - and a third line as gritty and tough as they come. At the time they also had the

  24. This team reminds me a little of the year we got Luongo. When we traded for him I knew right then that something special was going to happen to the team and he didn’t disappoint. That Turco battle was probably the best goaltending we’ve had in any series ever, simply remarkable. The similarity is a culmination of Miller, Myers, Benn, and Ferland. Their combined impact will be as great as adding such a marquee star goalie way back when. Maybe the Butcher for Mommeso, Ronning and Courtnal a bit too. But back to the Luongo deal, the team was still in transi

Speak for yourself. in the 3 years we've missed the playoffs we've Shed 9 years off of our roster in average player years Shed $40 million in salary, 5 of those being deemed "unlovable contracts" Went from dead last in the league to top 5 in prospect depth Stockpiled the deepest prospect pool this organization has ever seen Left us with an estimated $23 million in cap space to end next season with 6 UFA and 5 RFA players, 7 of which by then should be expendable. So when you say he gives YOU little to no faith, don't dare speak for the res

I get about 5,000 more followers in Instagram, that’s about it. We just visited Canada, the whole family and got a great show, memory for the rest of my life. Q: We asked Nikita Zaitsev – he was not recognized in Ottawa at all. But people in Vancouver did recognize you everywhere. A: Yeah this happened, people recognized me. But I was walking in the Canucks jersey. Later I took the

  29. He's being rewarded for putting together what appears to be a hell of a young core, from not the greatest draft positions. And for fetching four reasonable UFA this off season, signalling that he is ready to push for the playoffs for real. He's been pretty good, and getting better at his job. Also, its pretty obvious that the ownership didnt't want a lame duck scenario at GM in their 50th anniversary season. Things could be far worse in Vancouver. I think Benning's put together a very interesting team that is going to surprise. 2009 vibes

  32. The Canucks don't have the perfect roster, but there are 30 other teams without perfect rosters too. Benning came in with a team of aging players and almost no prospects, and I look at the roster today and it's pretty amazing what he's done. I wasn't sure how they'd move on from the Sedins, but yet, they're doing it. How long has EDM and TOR been rebuilding, and still struggling to find any success? Canucks were the last Canadian team to get to the SCF, and they'll be the next one. Benning has done a lot of good work over the last 5+ years. Early Prediction: Benning is nominated for GM of the

  35. I think that people forget that picks are lottery tickets, they don't always pay off. At some point you need some solid nhl players to win some games. EP's easy transition to and NHL start, Bo and Boeser's development, and Hughes seeming readiness to play with the big boys has moved the rebuild up a year or two. This should be great news for fans, but some choose to wallow in the rebuild. We have 4 genuine top 6 guys for the foreseeable future. Baertschi, Pearson, Ferland, and even Goldobin have shown ability to play top 6 as well and will have a healthy competition in camp. Our bottom 6

  37. Traded Gudbranson for Pearson, a 2nd round pick for Baertschi, signed Roussel and Beagle who greatly improved the penalty kill last year and addressed much needed depth. As I said earlier, you gotta be pretty dense to not see the improvements he’s made over the last couple summers.

  38. ....anticipating Kole Lind to have a break out season and possibly breaking into the top 50 best prospects ...if not, then top 100. Lind and Gaudette playing together could develop into something for the Canucks...let these two develop together on the farm...when they are ready, the experts will be saying "where did these two come from?" ...these kids developing on the farm team is the way to go...especially if the cupboards are full with 24 to 27 year olds (Miller, Horvat, Ferland, Pearson, Leivo, Roussell, etc. and budding superstars in Boeser and Petterrson)

  39. Great to see JB get this extension. Consistency is very important in building a winning team. Drafting has been his strength and he has his weaknesses like many others. Gillis gets way too much credit by some here for the team that went to the finals in 11. That was mostly built by Burke and Nonis. Brian Burke gets a lot of the Credit for Anaheim's cup but really the Murray brothers built that team. Burke added Pronger but that was a no brainer trade at the time. Its always essential to ad pieces to compliment what you have drafted. Yes giving up the first round pic for Mil
