  1. The logic behind letting Tanev, Markstrom, and Toffoli walk: By choosing to move forward with guys like Holtby, Schmidt, and Virtanen over Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli, Benning is thinking long term and not short term. Yes, we only saved 1.8 million in overall cap but those terms that Markstrom and Tanev got would have hurt us long term. As far as Toffoli goes, the Canucks were reportedly trying to move one of Boeser and Virtanen to clear space so that they could accommodate Toffoli’s salary but received low ball offers. Had Benning accepted those low ball offers f

  2. Kind of annoying that Juolevi is having a hard time slotting in. Baumer doesn’t trust him somehow yet the D core he assembled is responsible for the worst goals against in the league. Tell me how exactly Juolevi is going to hurt our chances? Gotta get him developing. His strengths are exactly what this team needs on the back end. Calm and a good first pass.

  3. Markstroms contract will be ass in a couple years. Whens the last time 6x6 worked in favour of the Canucks?

  4. Moving on from Marky didn't just save us a cap headache (I don't like that contract, glad we didn't give it to him), but it solved our goaltender conundrum regarding expansion. Holtby's expansion eligible, if they don't take him I'll be happy to retain him, if they do that's some cap freed up. Tanev made our D better, no question, but he was also uncharacteristically healthy last season. Maybe he holds up better in Calgary, but historically that's not how things go for him. I was fine letting him walk, didn't like the term. Toffoli would have required cap being moved

  6. You look at additions/subtractions to the roster- the result on the ice shouldnt be this bad. Although the Canucks arnt playing well as a group, their leaders clearly arnt playing well enough and they drive the bus. Pointed to TOR, COL and TB and developing winning teams is a process. Said TOR's young elite players are still learning how to play team D and until they win a playoff round, it's still a step they need to figure out. COL/TB have had ups and downs in their process to where they are now. PL says it has taken time (10 years in TB for example)/can be a long

  10. @Boudrias There is no 'defense' for the kind of turnovers they've been committing - so I'm hesitant to reduce their present struggles to 'defense' - which they, in general, are entirely capable of playing. The absence of Tanev certainly reduces the quality/ability of their top end shutdown unit. True that they are struggling on possession - they have a number of young players that give up territory, plain and simple - and are likely to for some time to come - but they've overcome that in the past by working harder, working smarter and taking advantage of the high end oppor

  11. I caught his segment this morning, too. I for one am just as guilty as a lot of Canuck fans for emotional outbursts and untempered expectations when things aren’t going well. It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture here and very easy to forget that the last 3 cup winners took years and years of highs and lows. I think the taste of last seasons playoff run distracted us from the fact this is still a very young team who realistically is a couple years out from truly contending. That being said, I just want to see a competitive effort every night and see the team playing for each othe

  12. If we get swept by the Leafs during our current series, I could see things accelerating where we see a change -- whether that is a trade or a firing. As for this game, I'm going to say we're going to lose this one as well.

  13. Virtanen had a decent game imo. 0% ozone starts 41.2% corsi (really, only Boeser and Edler had comparable, 'respectable possession' numbers, aside from the 4th line. 4 hits. I think that he's probably the best option to keep on the Motte Beagle line - they've all been very good together. Chatfield imo was one of the brighter spots in the lineup as well, particularly in such a fire drill - he battled well. For me, the things that can be done - might be to strengthen Sutter's wing. Gaudette has been getting killed - and Roussel has been spotty at best

  18. The venting going on after these loses appears more to do with a expectation/hope that the Canucks could return to playoffs again this year. The fact that Markstrom and Demko played at a level that covered up many of the d-side weakness’s on the club. No one should be overly surprised that they are struggling somewhat now. This is a process and likely another 2 year term. Worse case scenario they cannot salvage their season and are finished early. I am hoping management stays the course and is not panicked into bandaid efforts to try and save the season. Run the prospects thru ins

  20. Hahaha, nice. And clearly because of the lawsuit. Dobbs has the highest rated program on FBN, giving Fox high daily viewers and crushing their CNBC competition during the 5-6PM ET slot, and then again for the repeat at the 7-8PM ET slot. No way they cancel their most popular program and revenue engine, unless it’s due to the lawsuit and Dobbs being named as a codefendant.

  23. Same. A continued slide in the standings is one thing. It's not so much the losses, but how the team is losing that's concerning. They look lifeless and spineless out there. There's no unified team approach, merely individuals putting in individual efforts that don't amount to anything positive. To me a trade would be a rash decision, and one that would be under extreme scrutiny by ownership. I think determining why this team is playing the way it is, and what possibly led to it is more important, as it'll have much longer lasting effects overall than replacing one player with ano

  26. Certainly wished he applied this forward thinking in any of the years before. Even 2019 when he spent almost $10 mil on myers and ferland. It effectively signaled to Tanev his time was done. In isolation you can definitely make the case for letting Tanev/Markstrom/Toffoli/Stetcher walk and I will agree with you. I made peace with the fact we would lose out on one (optimistic) or three (realistic) of them. The fact we let all four walk for nothing is the issue here. And the fact we didn't even give Tanev and Toffoli or Stetcher an offer is disastrous asset and people ma

  29. Edler isn't going anywhere, nor should he. Only four Canucks have dressed for more games than him, and he'll pass Smyl this season. If he plays another season or two after this one he'd likely become just the fourth player to play a thousand games as a Canuck. You can easily guess who the other three are. I'm adamantly opposed to Edler retiring as anything but a Canuck. Dude gets $&!# on a lot, but he's still one of our better D at almost 35. He, like most of our players thus far, is still better than he's looked thus far. I refuse to belief our team just suddenly became $&

  31. I've watched a lot of games this year, both East and West games. It's like an All Star game out there. The physicality is disappearing from the game. I hope this is in part to the lack of emotion and energy missing with no fans for these players. It must be odd for them. Combine the Disney on ice with the, let's call everything" and it's turning into shadow of itself.

  34. Some of the guys seem to forget that we won last season by out-working everyone and playing as a team. I get the fatigue issue though. Not only have we played more games, but we've had a lot of special teams play which tires out our top pkers and power play guys. I don't get all the negativity. We are lucky to have hockey and with all that's happened, you'd think that more people would be grateful and see what's important in their lives. Winning would be great, but I'm just happy to have hockey. The people crying the loudest and most often predicted a regression. Now

  35. I think this is what was so attractive about going there for Malhotra - they've been a team with a glaring weakness, that his specific strengths can really address. Matthews, for example, had no business being such a weak player without the puck with the size, speed and toolbox he has - and as a result they've been having to use Tavares as a rented mule in the postseason (and were to obstinate to add a legitimate hard minutes bottom six center). Malhotra is tonic to their circumstances imo. As for the Canucks - to repeat - 18 x 25 and younger players on their roster, 13

  38. I have no problem with letting Markstrom and Tanev walk at what they got. I think we could have tied Tanev up for less if we had the room, a few days before the deadline. Toffoli, it really sucked to have to let go, and it really comes down to 3 contracts that screwed us over in retaining Toffoli and bringing in some of the other deals that were available around the NHL in the off season. Loui Eriksson is the biggest one and Benning owns this one for giving out a 6 year term, but I also understand the rational behind doing it at the time. LE was looking for stability fo

I think it's important to remember that Al Franken was condemned and forced to resign by his fellow Democrats for pretending to grope a woman on a USO tour. It's also important to note that this took place 2 years before he ran for office. (sound familiar?) Also important to remember, Steve King was kicked off committees by his Republican colleagues for merely asking a question about why "White Nationalism" was a bad thing. (King did and said other

  40. As much as Marky & Tanev were leaders, I find it hard to believe the dressing room would be in such turmoil without them, especially bringing in a guy like Schmidt. Turnover is part of the business. It'll be interesting to see if, what & when changes take place that's for sure.

  41. I don’t understand the gms in the North division Spezza makes it clear he was going to retire if any team picked him up from waivers. So instead of warding off reams from picking him up it should have been a huge opportunity to pick him up and let him retire Why play so nice? Pick him up and screw the leafs over by having him retire. All any team needed was the little cap space he takes initially, he retires and comes straight off the books instead he is still a leaf and scores 3 on us
