  1. so we have the best goalie coach with all the negotiating power, but Jim's an idiot because he left it too long, which he actually didn't because he got it done, but he's bad because he had negating power and didn't use it, which he didn't have. Now thats a Benning hate logic pretzel.

  3. So many “Experts” here and shocking levels of ignorance. I would no longer be considered an expert as things have changed a lot, but I have in the distant past, investigated numerous sexual assaults. This is a really sensitive issue for me because I still take counselling over guilt for not being able to get convictions in many cases where it was pretty evident that a sexual assault occurred and I feel like I let down many people who came to me as it was my job to help them. It is shockingly difficult to successfully get through the courts and shockingly hard on victims. There isn’t likely to be a resolution anytime soon. It taking a few months isn’t unusual at all and most certainly doesn’t speak to the relative merits of the case either way. They will be especially careful due to it being a high profile case. Conviction rates for sexual assaults are really low…. Really, really low. That is in addition to really low reporting rates by victims. Mainly because there are often not witnesses and often not enough physical evidence just due to the nature of the interactions. Very few of them are the types you see in movies where a stranger drags a woman into the bushes and attack her, most are by attackers known to the victim. “It was consensual” is the standard defence as it negates most physical evidence that exists. It is highly probable (because it is what happens in most cases) is that Crown will find that there isn’t a high enough likelihood of conviction so they won’t proceed with charges. That doesn’t prove Virtanen innocent or guilty nor does it prove the girl was telling the truth or lying. It means that it isn’t likely that a judge/jury would find that the evidence is “beyond a reasonable doubt”. You can be a grown up and give them both the benefit of the doubt if that is the way the criminal case proceeds. You can even be grown up enough to believe that both of them are telling the truth. She could have absolutely given lots of signals about not consenting that Jake entirely missed. He could be like a bunch of posters on this thread who appear to have zero understanding about what consent actually is and believe that unless a girl starts kicking and eye gouging that she is consenting. He would be wrong… but that could have been how he interpreted things at the time. Most women don’t fight with their attackers because it is just not usually an effective strategy. This is a man about a 100lbs heavier than her and is in peak physical condition. The outcome of fighting sexual attackers often ends up with a victim just being sexually assaulted AND badly beaten up or killed. Maybe that helps the possibility of a conviction down the road… but who is thinking about that when they are worried about being seriously harmed or killed? The reason MANY sexual assault victims use the civil side is because the burden of proof is lower. The criminal courts are designed with a threshold that tries to make sure ZERO innocent people are criminally convicted… even if that means 100 guilty people go free. That is a design and not a bug. In civil court the burden of proof is only “on the balance of probabilities”. Meaning is it more likely than not that the person did it. That is still a high standard of proof in a sexual assault case because unless one party or the other comes across as entirely unreliable, there aren’t many ways to decide who is telling the truth. Both parties will be well coached by their respective counsel to not likely make mistakes in testimony that would jeopardize their case. None of this is likely going to play out in a short enough timeframe for the team to have an answer before next season. That means either the league lets the team terminate the contract or he has to get bought out. The league can terminate the contract and then Virtanen can appeal it with an arbitrator deciding or even not hearing the appeal until the civil process goes forward and there is some sort of resolution. The dollars and cap hit are low enough that it would probably be way more expensive to fight a contract termination than just to let it go away and take the year or two to resolve itself through the civil system.

  7. This is a really dumb take. You don't have to have a committee of victims...one is enough. You don't have to commit multiple acts to be guilty of one. I'm not of the guilty until proven innocent mentality...but I'm not sure that this spin offers anything at all.

  13. I feel like his rebuttal that says he "didn't force intercourse" doesn't mean nothing happened that she wasn't ok with. But we don't know the truth and likely never will know the full version. These things ARE hard to prove but that doesn't mean they didn't happen. Or that they did. Whatever the deal is, time to move past Jake...too much distraction and not a fit here. He's got his crew but I'm not sure it's this one. Sad, I really liked Jake...IF these charges are proven to be untrue I wish him well. Somewhere else. I'm just tired of hearing about him and I don't feel like his focus and possibly his maturity level are where they need to be. Despite having an extended period of time to demonstrate that they are.

  16. I think there's also a significant reputation damage. It's foolish not to hear his side of the story and simply side with the 'other'. There's A LOT of questions to be answered still. I really wonder what took him so long to say this outright, not that it would change how people would perceive him anyway. Many of the twitter warriors, for instance, insist that Virtanen is guilty - even before all the evidence has been laid out. I think it's also important that the criminal investigation is ongoing (not likely to get anything from it), alongside a civil one. This, to me, indicates that the accusations are not very strong. Far too much time has passed by (many reasons for this to happen, of course), which most certainly would not assist the accuser, with regards to the criminal aspect. And if there are texts that go back and forth AFTER the said incident, any rape claims could be nullified in court. Let's be clear though: in such a situation, that doesn't 'prove' that rape didn't happen. The only thing that would absolve Virtanen of all wrongdoing is if he wasn't there at all. Unfortunately, he was there. He put himself in that position. Very tricky. In my opinion, this is going to be dealt with on the civil side. And if Virtanen is considering countersuing, this could be a very messy civil case. Even dropping her lawsuit may or may not stop him from proceeding with a countersuit. At best, she's hoping that Virtanen will settle. That is likely her only way to 'win'. In the event that she lied or misrepresented her stuff, she's going to pay big time. Either way, Virtanen is going to get shipped out, no matter what. Such a terrible ending for a player that never could put it together.

  17. Good to hear both sides right? https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/bc-news/vancouver-canucks-player-responds-to-lawsuit-alleging-sexual-misconduct-3861152 Virtanen denies the allegations “about what happened that evening,” adding “he did not physically force the plaintiff to have intercourse with him.” In his filed response, Virtanen “denies that the plaintiff expressed any indication, verbal or physical, that she did not want to engage in any sexual activity.” Adding, “the plaintiff, through her words and conduct indicated that she consented to the sexual activity that occurred.”

  18. Well we did need a goalie...and D. Probably a LOT more so than a winger BTW (where we're organizationally deepest). And Schmidt (despite his off year) was a no-brainer trade. Virtanen was an error given hindsight. The same people complaining about Toffoli would have been complaining about letting Virtanen walk for nothing. I wouldn't be surprised if Benning was likely attempting to use qualified Virtanen's rights to move some of that cap to add Toffoli actually. When Toffoli signed elsewhere... Sure. By most accounts, players are treated quite well and fairly by Vancouver/Benning. You have no idea what OEL's cap would have been or what cap we might have moved out. He didn't want to. He was looking for ways to improve, not maintain the status quo of a rebuilding team that wasn't good enough. I disagree. May not have showed this season (for a myriad of reasons) but I 100% swap Tanev and Stectcher for Schmidt and Hamonic any day.

  19. It all comes down to puck movement. Their lack of practice time was clearly affecting them this season. How many times were those one time passes just a bit off? Countless times I remember seeing Petey or Boeser have to reach back and hold the puck because the pass was off. If that’s dialed in our powerplay is much more effective. Everything should revolve around either the Petey or Boeser one timer, a Huggy point shot, or a Horvat bumper play. You do those plays effectively enough and you’re gonna score a ton.

  24. Shaw is their "defenceman" Ian Clark. Big fan of Shaw. Lesser fan of Torts (he got a raw deal here but he was also done in CBJ) and ... Not a fan of Big lARSEn. If the team let him do his thing here, our system issue will be rectified. I'm a little worried about D-injuries since he relies on a more active and physical defence in the lanes rather than the challenge type that lets [poopy] shots through, but... we'll see what he comes up with. Could be a product of what he was working with there.

  25. I'm also a CBJ fan. Because I like hurting myself. To "us Canuck fans", this would be like Newell Brown or Nolan Baumgartner being promoted to head coach. A guy they've been screaming to offload... goes up the ladder. So yeah. Good times. Great.

  27. Shaw told us why it was taking so long on in yesterday’s interview. Brown was under contract and Shaw and green had to discuss without anyone’s knowledge. They only made the announcement once browns contract was up and not renewed as opposed to firing brown with weeks left in his contract. that’s not dragging that’s class!

  28. Excellent hire getting Shaw. Part of me thinks hiring Shaw is a contingency too. If we do poorly again, then Shaw could be promoted to head coach if Green gets fired. Clearly no one wants that to happen, but it’s good to be ready if crap happens.

  30. I think this is an important point, and something I had to reflect on after Benning & everyone else was retained (this happened before these new updates). It's clear that ownership doesn't listen or capitulate to noisy fans. That is evidence of strong leadership and proof that he has a backbone. We did not panic like the other teams did, and for that, I think Aquilini deserves some recognition. It would have been too easy to just fire everyone and use them as scapegoats. The team has a POSITIVE relationship with all of its staff, contrary to what the media reports. I am also more impressed that Aquilini is willing to add quality personnel (by hiring Shaw) to improve this team in every way possible, rather than just simply firing people. The theme of loyalty is clearly being emphasized, for the most part. If players wanted Green or Baumer gone, they would have been. Hughes, to my surprise, spoke pretty highly of Baumer. It seems to me that the players do have a significant say on matters, which is the most important thing. The media is absolutely garbage. We've talked about how wrong they've been this offseason. Let's make sure we do NOT react to what they have to say again. Hell, all of Canadian media was wrong about the Leafs. LOL. Special mention to Button who was wrong, but OWNED UP to it. He said he is eating crow and is laughing about it. Didn't make excuses.

  32. So.... Benning returns. Green is back. Clark is back in spite of being virtually already gone lol. Schmidt (or whomever those reports were supposed to refer to) never requested a trade.... that's a pretty bad batting average for the smarmy drama queens.

  33. I would be surprised if Artur does not speak Russian since he has Russian last name which pronounces [Shee-lov]. How did Russian surname Shilov become the English-Latvian Silovs? Simple. After getting independence in 1991 the Latvian government declared mandatory name rules for the entire country. For the male population, the first and last names had to end with letter "S" plus the special local letters so Artur Shilov became Artūrs Šilovs which became Arturs Silovs in English. You know, the English language does not recognize those funny special letters in Eastern European names like Š, ć, ž, etc. For instance, original surname of famous Joe Sakic is actually Šakić which pronounces Sha-Keech but this is another story

  34. Hey everyone, so this year when I looked at the divisions at the start of the year it gave me this sense that the majority of the divisions were a 'feast or famine'. Top teams feasting on bottom teams and bottom teams starving/fighting amongst each other for their 2 points. However when I looked at the Canadian division, I had a hard time deciding what teams I thought would make the playoffs and which ones would miss the playoffs. Just with how teams were restricted to play within one division, I feel like out of all the divisions to play in, the Canadian division was the toughest on a nightly basis. Now I want to clarify when I mean the 'toughest' I mean in terms of equality, I felt like 6/7 teams were playoff teams, however 2 teams had to miss. Which 2 teams that was to be, was a toss up to me. Ottawa was the only team that I could agree with myself, was not a play off team. However Ottawa on paper did not look like they would be a push over either and they proved that the the rest of the Division that they would make teams work for their win. The fact that the Canadian div had 1 less team than the rest made it much more difficult to pick up the much needed 2 points elsewhere in the division. Canadian teams did not have an easy night for the most part. Teams in other divisions thrived in their atmosphere due to the weaker competition at the bottom of the div and the abundance of weak teams to feed on. For pretty much every other division it was pretty clear who the top 4 or 5 teams would be, when you have the 'California distress' in one division..... It's pretty obvious who is going to make the playoffs. Then in the East/Central div there are teams like DET, CHI, BUF, NJD, NYR, CBJ. Now I want to reiterate that I am not saying the Canadian division is the best division, but it was the toughest to play in, each game was fairly evenly matched and was a hard fought battle for 2 points, no matter who the opponent was. I feel like the large majority of the Canadian division is around the middle of the league to slightly above the middle of the league in a normal year. Playing in a division so tightly matched from top to bottom makes it much more difficult to battle adversity, because there are no easy LAK, SJS, ANA or BUF games to make up for the struggles throughout the season. Now I have done a bunch of research and gathered stats of head to head records etc to break down just how much more different/difficult it was to play in the Canadian division compared to all the other divisions in the league. Thus the 'feast or famine' analogy. I'll start with a couple examples and then I will break down each and every division. Im going to include goals for and goals against in this as well. So first I will start by using the example of VAN vs MTL. Montreal was 6-0-3 against Vancouver this season. Vancouver on the other hand was 3-5-1 against Montreal. The 6-0-3 record for MTL looks like they handled VAN, but it was closer than that. Same goes for Calgary, they went 7-3-0 against Vancouver, but VAN's record was 3-5-2 against CGY TOR vs VAN 5-3-1 VAN vs TOR 4-5-0 WPG vs VAN 6-3-0... VAN vs WPG 3-5-1 Now lets look at some other lower seeded teams in other divisions I'll even use teams that were close to a playoff spot ARZ vs VGK 2-5-1 ARZ vs MIN 1-7-0 LAK+SJS+ANA+ARZ combined for 5 wins vs VGK LAK+SJS+ANA+ARZ combined for 7 wins vs COL BUF had 6 wins against top 4 teams in the division CHI had 7 wins against top 4 teams in the division. Record and WIN % against top 4 teams in the respective divisions VAN 14-21-2 vs top 4 teams 39% Ottawa.. who went 0-9-0 vs EDM had a 14-21-2 record against the top 4 teams in the division, also sporting a 39% win% CGY 16-19-2 vs top 4 teams 44% The two worst teams in the Northern division were both basically .500 vs the #1 team in the division. VAN was 4-5-0 and OTT was 4-4-1 Western Div ARZ 10-19-3 31% SJS 8-19-5 25% LAK 10-17-5 31% ANA 7-19-6 22% Central Div DAL 9-12-11 28% CHI 7-19-6 22% CBJ 9-16-7 28% DET 11-17-4 34% Eastern Div NYR 11-17-4 34% PHI 12-13-7 36% NJD 9-18-5 28% BUF 6-24-2 19% In every other division top teams 'feasted' on bottom teams, who 'starved' vs top teams. Thus the 'feast or famine' divisions. Vegas had a 84% win rate versus non-playoff teams. So now lets look at Top 4 versus non-playoff teams. Northern Div TOR 16-5-4 64% EDM 21-8-0 72% WPG 18-9-1 64% MTL 13-10-5 46% - MTL is the only team in the league to have a better win% within the top 4 vs the non-playoff teams. This shows just how well rounded the Northern division was, that from top to bottom any team stood a chance on any given night. Western Div COL 25-5-2 78% VGK 27-5-0 84% MIN 25-6-1 78% STL 16-10-6 50% Eastern Div WSH 24-7-1 75% PIT 22-8-3 69% BOS 21-8-3 66% NYI 23-6-3 72% Central Div CAR 20-7-5 63% FLA 25-6-1 78% TBL 23-7-2 72% NSH 24-7-0 75% If you were to average out the top 4 win% against non-playoff teams North - 61.5% West - 72.5% East - 70.5% Central - 72% average win% vs playoff teams North - 39.6% West - 27.3% East - 28.9% Central - 28.1% The Canadian division was just barely better than a coin toss from top to bottom. It was the most well balanced division and the toughest division to win in. But that does not mean it was the best division. Just in terms of balance and nearly equal competition all around. Teams like LAK SJS ANA BUF NJD etc.... really made it easy for the good teams in the division to solidify a playoff spot. So really, despite how poorly things looked in the standings, the Canucks are much closer to the middle of the league than the bottom. We only looked like a bottom team because of how we finished in the division, which was the toughest division, plus the injuries, ridiculous scheduling and COVID. As well as being decimated by COVID and never really recovering from that. Imagine if we had Pettersson for those 30 games. We went 14-14-2 from the day Pettersson was shut down. Or did everyone forget the 7 wins in 8 games prior to COVID? Imagine if we had him even with COVID I think Pettersson would have helped us win at least 5 games of the 14 losses. With those 5 wins, we would be in the playoffs and Montreal would be out. Which by the way Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary would all be in a playoff spot in 5 wins and under. As for the other divisions..... Buffalo would need 12 more wins to TIE NYI and 13 wins to make it into a playoff spot. NJD would need 8 to tie and 9 to get in, same goes for DET and CBJ 8, 8 to tie and 9 to get in. ANA 10 to tie 11 to get in, LAK and SJS would need 7 to tie and 8 to get in. The NYR who were 5th, would need 6 wins to make it into the playoffs.... Vancouver had a rough start but in the 12 games after Pettersson was shut down and leading up to COVID Vancouver went 8-3-1 The boys were heating up. It's really unfortunate we got COVID.... Anyways, I hope this post can bring some positivity to a such an unfortunate season. There was also the emergence of Hoglander, Boeser regained his confidence and played a full season and was one of our better players and Demko continued to build on his magical playoff performance. Keep your heads up and be proud of the boys and what they battled through this year and look forward to the 2021-22 season!! We are a lot closer than you think! @DSVII There ya go, my 'feast or famine' outlook on the season!

  36. I love the Shaw hiring. If it works like he indicated it will it will be a huge positive for the team.

  37. As long as I get Jeri Ryan, then everything is fine.

  39. Of course you wouldn't see an issue with it...you're just like him. Same s***, different day! Read through the multiple comments from Drance re: this / other Canuck topics lately. Passive aggressive negative shots at the team and back handed complements. Plus, just being straight up wrong about stuff!

  40. You know what's funny? The typical negative nancies on this board - we all know who they are - have nothing to say about this. Makes you wonder...
