  1. Yeh, Karma and all that. What I find incredulous is that even not feeling well she still went out and about. With all the communications about staying home if you're not feeling well, it's pretty freakin' selfish to go out because whether you have a cold, the flu or COVID, you know you are exposing other people to your germs. I try not to wish anyone bad things...but at the same time I feel a lot less empathy for someone who clearly doesn't give a crap about anyone else.
  2. Stawns, sorry to hear about your former close friend, although I suppose this is a strong lesson in consequences. There are still so many people who don't see the risk all around them. I agree that we're probably going to end up in a shutdown now that it seems that much of the spread is in workplaces. Hopefully it may not go to a full province shutdown, maybe more regional but no matter what, it's going to be a long winter since it seems a vaccine that is readily available is still a long way off. Now that so many of us are disgusted by the rash behaviour of COVID deniers and anti-maskers, next up will be the appalling behaviour of those who will try to fabricate reasons to jump the queue for vaccines. I know we're all supposed to "love our fellow man" but damn, that's hard sometimes.
  3. I am an emergency and critical care physician. I had COVID-19 infection twice and I’m tired. (kevinmd.com) Starting to see medical people who are clearly fed up with the COVID deniers and Anti Maskers (sad they have to deal with it at all) trying to educate and create awareness. My heart breaks for how challenging their jobs are right now. Nurse in Calgary posted a FB post that received widespread coverage as well. If it helps change anyone's mind about how serious the situation is then it's time well spent.
  4. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)32478-8/fulltext Obituaries for a small subset of health care workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in caring for COVID patients and lost their lives. For those who still think this is nothing but a flu, or it only creates significant harm to elderly, might want to reconsider your position. If not for yourself, then for the people around you. Wear a mask, physically distant and try not to be out and about unless necessary. "Greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for a friend". I doubt that most people go into health care with the notion that they are risking their lives to care for others health.
  5. The quality (or moreso the lack of) care, staffing issues, inability to stem pandemic spread within the care homes because of the admin issues are all things that we as a society allowed to happen. The concept of long term care for seniors is a good one, but I think we've had the curtain pulled back on what has been a horrid experience for many seniors - if they can't afford the fancy private care homes, the government run care homes lack a lot.
  6. It will be interesting to see 5 years from now when hopefully this pandemic is behind us - what about our society and government has changed? Certainly the issues we have come across have held up a mirror and what we've seen isn't pretty. Long term care is probably the biggest national disgrace that we as a society allowed to happen. Concerns about delivery of education are rampant - clearly things need to change. In country development and production of PPE and Vaccines - we should never be at the mercy of external providers - especially when other countries can strong arm and hoard distribution and supply. Right wing conspiracy nutjobs - not sure that will ever wane, but it certainly seems to have been exacerbated with COVID. Not that I like group think, I believe dissenting thought and opinion is good as it challenges all of us to look at different perspectives but complete selfishness with zero regard for how one's behaviour can negatively impact others I have no time for. What other things do you hope will change as an outcome of our experiences with COVID? Are there positives that you have seen that you hope continue?
  7. I will never understand the mindset of "me" vs "we". We have a responsibility to help others, and right now we can easily do that by wearing masks, staying home as much as possible and social distancing. None of those things are hard to do. Although tbh I'm struggling a bit with the staying home piece as I'm also trying to support local business. I have never bought anything on Amazon and never will.
  8. Based on the corrected numbers, we might actually be seeing some small improvements from a few days ago. Would be nice to see that trend continue. The numbers originally released yesterday were so disheartening. I'm so sick of seeing the video clips of people abusing employees of various establishments over having to wear a mask...why I didn't want to see a mandatory mask regulation imposed. It brings out the worst in people and puts staff on the firing line for being abused, spit on, sworn at and no one should have to be subjected to that. People can be so disgusting towards others.
  9. Yeh, and we aren't even locked down. We're being asked to keep our butts on the sofa for a few weeks. If we were in a "lockdown" anyone out protesting would be fined or jailed. I'm so tired of the selfish aholes who can't look beyond the 2 feet around them to see that they might actually be able to help someone else by doing what is asked of them. Sadly if one of them gets hit by a car or trips and falls on a curb while protesting, they will expect space in the hospital for them to be treated, not recognizing the irony.
  10. Saw the media coverage of crowds at Sky Harbour airport in Phoenix as they travel to wherever for US Thanksgiving. A friend of a friend left Edmonton this morning for PV, not planning on returning til April. The US is in an amazing pile of hurt that is going to get worse before it gets better. Snowbirds....I don't get it. What happens if you get sick wherever you are? Not sure what the coverage is for things like COVID.
  11. Deb, wondering about whether because you are admin staff working in an office would you not fall under the WorkSafe rules rather than the school rules? I work in a gym, and as long as I'm behind the plexi at the desk I don't have to wear a mask. However, if one of my colleagues joins me at the desk, we both have to put on masks.
  12. My challenge is when someone is on my ignore list (all 2 people) and someone keeps quoting them so I end up seeing their posts anyway.
  13. Since KOS posts usually trigger me, I think its in both our best interests that I have him on ignore. That way I don't get irritated by his position, and he doesn't then get irritated by mine. He has enough other people that he is battling with on these boards.
  14. And the mask mandates are accomplishing what exactly? Every province is getting hammered with skyrocketing case counts. Contact tracing in the Fraser Valley seems to indicate that the majority of spread is as a result of gatherings in homes. Masks won't solve that. Anyone that cares is already wearing masks everywhere. If only we could isolate the people that don't give a crap and transport them all to some deserted island where they could just infect each other and not the average public that are trying their best to play by the rules. I'm sure you've seen the same videos I have of people having meltdowns about being asked to wear a mask inside stores. No staff person who is probably barely out of high school should be expected to deal with being threatened by some lunatic raving about "their rights".
  15. My fear with any sort of mandate is that this will only get uglier because the people who are adamant they aren't wearing a mask are still going to push the issue and it puts everyone who is trying to enforce the order at risk. We've seen multiple videos of that happening in various Transit situations and it gets ugly. It then makes it dangerous for any employee who is trying to do their job.
  16. One of the challenges of trying to find ways to fight this virus is that there is no government on earth that can regulate stupidity and selfishness. Mandated masks don't help in all situations, and in particular in the Fraser Valley right now. For example: 42 people infected because some stupid selfish idiots thought it was a good idea to go get a workout in after having had a COVID test and being told to self isolate until the results came back. So, being asked to stay away from people for 48 - 72 hours was too much of a burden? A Mom in Abbotsford now in hospital just coming off a ventilator because she ignored public safety recommendations and had some people over to the house to have a birthday celebration. One of the people who came was sick but still thought it was ok to go out to an indoor group. So 2 idiots who ignored public health recommendations. All the mandatory mask regulations in the world will do nothing in situations like this. People need to get their head out of their butt and start recognizing that their individual actions are creating the problems and making other people sick. I am so sick of the selfishness. We've been in this mess now for 9 months, there isn't a person on earth who doesn't know what we are all expected to do. Why in hell do we need the government to regulate it. Other places that have mandatory masks are having no better results than we are. Calgary and Edmonton come to mind. Yeh, AB is really doing well.
  17. Zero empathy right now for the South Asian community. The self centered selfish actions of some have created a massive problem for everyone. We will likely be pushed back to the March/April levels of shut down because some couldn't manage to live a few months without mass gatherings, couldn't manage self isolation when they were waiting for test results and generally think the pandemic guidelines don't apply to them. Now people in Surrey aren't answering the phones when contact tracers call them because having COVID carries a stigma. Well holy F***!
  18. Can't remember who was looking for a COVID-19 antibody test - just saw an ad that LifeLabs is now offering it. Not sure what's required/involved, if you need a doctor requisition or something that you can request and pay for but the ad was there. Might be worth checking out.
  19. Love this story, thanks for sharing. I find myself these days spending more time looking for the good, the funny, the positive as everything else is so oppressive. I'm more careful now what I watch on TV, become addicted to HGTV because any problem is resolved in 60 minutes or less LOL! Magic of TV. All we can do is support each other, try to be the best human we can, do the right thing, care for others, we will get through this. Our ancestors have overcome much worse, world wars and pandemics without benefit of science and technology (not sure if technology is a benefit?)
  20. According to a friend who works in biotech the issue of cold storage for the vaccine isn't any big deal, many vaccines require that and they use dry ice to achieve. Or in Winnipeg they just store it outside in the snow bank LOL! I think it will be many months before we achieve a high enough vaccination rate to greatly impact the spread just from the production and distribution of this vaccine and the fact it requires 2 doses 21 days apart. Just because Canada has ordered 20M doses that doesn't mean we will get them all at once. If Pfizer can produce 100M doses, that will be split between all the countries that have ordered some. Hopefully it won't be another PPE issue where the US hijacked orders to redirect them to the US. Once Canada receives the start of our shipments, I expect there will be a staggered distribution, likely first in line will be the most vulnerable and those working with them and essential services like medical and first responders. There was some interesting info on 60 minutes last night about it and how the distribution in the US is being managed. I beileve its anticipated to be well into 2022 before everyone can expect to be vaccinated. I think it's going to be a challenge as some people will want to queue jump as they think their needs supersede others. Might get ugly! Of course that may change if other developers bring vaccination options on line and increase the availability.
  21. Have a friend who told me today via text that she and her husband both got COVID from their daughter. She got it from meeting a friend for dinner in a restaurant. Two days after the dinner the friend called to advise he had tested positive for COVID. By then daughter was starting to show symptoms. All went for testing, Mom and Dad were negative, daughter was positive. So the infection time frame is UP TO 14 days, but it appears it can be a lot less. Mom and Dad got sick as well. All have recovered which is good news as my friend has serious asthma.
  22. Interesting opinion he expresses....and the fact he quotes Sweden is humorous given what they are dealing with. No second wave? Not sure what we're seeing across the globe if it isn't a second wave. Glad he's not my doctor.
  23. Not sure he could do less than he's done to this point. He'll likely spend the next couple of months fighting the outcome of the Election. Biden is already getting briefed on current status of COVID, maybe the public health people will just bypass the Donald and start working with Biden and his team once Biden is confirmed as President Elect? The Donald was threatening to fire Dr. Fauci if he was re-elected....to what end I don't understand but I don't understand much of what comes out of the Donald's mouth.
  24. I believe that's what Dr. Birx was identifying a few days ago in her statement - it was going to get a LOT worse in the US, predicting there would soon be 100K infections per day. Definitely contradicting her boss who was spouting that they were 'rounding the corner'.
