DeNiro - I did not indicate Gillis was good with the media. He just did not get into their silly little games of misquotation nor would he relinquish details about private matters that the press feast and thrive on. So yes he may have created a wedge between him and the media simply because he would not let into them at any time. You might have to listen to his interview once again to weigh in on what he actually said about team performance. He included himself in having to be evaluated for the poor showing Gillis held out to make the best deal he possibly could for Luongo. Fans were critical of him for taking so long to get him traded. He wasn't just going to give him away. Then when he did trade him, fans were critical about what we received in return. I suppose it is the damned if you do and damned if you don't scene, right? I suggest to you that the new make up of the league as it relates to trades etc is a far cry from what it used to be when ownership just opened the vault and paid what was demand. The rich teams excelled, while the poor teams floundered, year after year. Now, assets are a premium commodity, drafting is vastly important but great trades are few and far between and a GM must distinguish between making a trade that will help the team or selling the farm to make a trade. All too many fans just don't get the logistics of the draft and them blaming Gillis for poor drafting during his tenure is ridiculous. Do those same fans not realize that the more successful a team is during the year negatively affects the position one must draft from. Successful teams pick last so how can anyone actually criticize Gillis for having a poor draft record during his tenure here when all the top draft picks were swallowed up by the league bottom dwellers. Does he not get some credit for going outside the draft to look for players in colleges etc. It is obvious Vancouver fans change their minds and opinions like I daily change my socks. I guy is fired because he did not make the playoffs one year. Shame on those who made that decision. All I can say is, beware of what you get in lieu. Things have a way of being worse than what they were before. People need to be careful about what they demand or wish for

Poor decision. Who is actually out there who can do better or actually survive the wrath of Vancouver sports fans and the aggressive, blood thirsty media that inhabits this town? Watch out Trevor Linden. This band of Vancouver hooligans will sell you down the river, no matter how much you are revered or respected at this very moment. It just might be in your best interests to turn down getting involved with the Canucks. Ownership is only interested in money and micro managing a business they know nothing about. You will have to work with a coach that cannot kindle a relationship with his players and you must continually withstand the onslaught of a revengeful fan base will turn on you as well if you do not secure the grail that has for so long eluded them.

I have listened to that interview several times and I agree with you. In what statement of the interview can anyone get the gest of that idea. That idea was basically thrown out by someone on Team 1040 and like all else, if it is hatched or manufactured on Team 1040, it just has to be right. The fact remains they haven't got anything right for a long time. I would rather watch Judge Judy than listen to all the rumours and innuendo that originates from that station

Right on. I don't think you will see any change this year in the GM or coach. Okay, we had a crappy year and mistakes were made. There were many issues that affected the team this year. Let them work out the problems, find some solutions and as some say right the ship. As I noted in another post, the blame for this crappy year should not fall on just one person. These people are supposed to be professionals, give them one more year to get it right. If failure results, then get out the big axe. A new coach or GM is not going to magically turn this team around, especially a coach that has only had one year to prove himself. The players need to hold a degree of culpability as well. The are the ones who have the mandate to skate, score goals and play the type of game asked of them. That is what they get paid to do so they share the blame as well. There are a few players on the team that need a swift kick in the butt or be shown the door.

I agree. I believe Torts was hired because ownership wanted him. Do you not recall Torts being asked back to Vancouver by ownership after the initial coach interviews had been conducted. That being said, I do not agree this fiasco with the team is laid entirely at the Coaches doorstep. Some of the players have to take the heat as well. The real question here is who are the players who have not bought into the system. Anyone who is being paid several million dollars a year should have no excuse for not buying into a system. Can we imagine if we as workers did not do what was expected of us on the job. I can say with authority that we certainly would not be traded to another company.....

Burrows is the heart and soul of this team. He is the spark that gets the team rolling. Alex has had a terrible year with injuries. It was obvious he was not playing up to his level. All too many were ready to get rid of him while he is still in his prime. Those who advocated trading him know nothing about rehab and how it relates to hockey. A 30 goal scorer just doesn't fall off the map with his point production without there being a justifiable cause. The same applies to the Sedins as well. Some fans need a serious wake up call when it comes to tolerance, patience and understanding. Unfortunately, injuries and some type of psychological problem has/have plagued this time since January and unless you understand the logistics of a team, impatience raises it's ugly head. The problems have to be understood and worked through. They just don't fix themselves like some may believe.

LUONGO TRADED to Florida - Official Discussion Thread

Yes please don't say any more. It is obvious you are a learned hockey man but what you have to say has little if and significance. I will however surrender to your right to have an opinion as limited in credibility as it appears to be. -
LUONGO TRADED to Florida - Official Discussion Thread

What does this fan base expect. Last year fans could not wait to get Luongo out of town. He was blamed for not being a clutch player who could not make that save when it was needed. He was blamed for our losses against Chicago for two years during the playoffs. He was a clutz when it came to playing playoff hockey. He could not win the big games because he did not have the edge. Do all of the Luongo critics remember the nicknames they labelled him with when the team lost. Fans could not wait to run him out of town on a rail. He didnt even measure up during the Boston Stanley Cup final. Fans continued to measure him up to goaltenders who were fortunate enough to win a stanley cup. Howard, Niemi, Rask and several others were all better goalies because they had better save averages according to the most critical of fans. Now you are all complaining that he has been traded. What has been done is satisfy a goalie that wanted out of a town that did not appreciate him. A town that belittled him when he lost, not praise him for what he did. All I can say is you never miss what you had until you lose it and this franchise has lost the best goaltender it ever had; he was not appreciated for all his wins but scorned for his losses. Well Vancouver karma has caught up with you and you deserve every little bit of it. Good luck to all the whiners out there, it may be another forty years you will have to wait to become a winner. I even suggest Toronto deserves a winning team more. Vancouver doesn't even deserve an NHL franchise the way the media and fans treat their players. -

Appears the trade was in the workings during the Olympics. He did not play a regular season game after he got back. One might wonder if the trade was the reason he did not play more than one olympic game. He may have been told, you get hurt in the olympics and the deal will fall through. His wife may have had a word in the decision as well. We all know she wanted him out of Vancouver. -

Hottest sports story of the day and you dont bother to read the first page of CDC????????? -
Has it not been reported that Gillis has much interest in Ryan O'Rielly. Few here have even mentioned him in any post. IMVHO Gillis will make a play for him at the deadline. He is young and very talented and would fit nicely. Also, has anyone questioned why Luongo has not played in the last two games? What might be happening there? I am not buying the story he is rusty due to not playing much in the Olympics. Any ideas? Personally, I can not see a repeat of treating him like they did last year unless there is something that is definitely in the wind with Lou. Have they found a team that will take on his contract? Would not surprise me if Toronto was interested, mind you we would have to take salary back. Toronto sees nothing but playoff lights right now and they know they need to get stronger, especially in goal, otherwise they are just going to be first round playoff fodder. Nonis needs to swing a deal and if he has the backing of ownership he may just go after Luongo. Nonis also loves/likes Edler. Is there something there as well. Who knows. Two days to go

In my opinion, your parents were lucky however, their landlord could have also said no. I appreciate where you are coming from with respect to asking however we are talking millions of dollars and a family's future here. You buy a brand new vehicle that comes with a five year, 300,000 mile warranty. You have problems with the tranny a few months down the road and you take it back to the dealer. The dealer asks you to waive the conditions of the warranty. You hear from friends that he has done that to them as well. What do you now think of the credibility of the auto dealer? A deal is a deal is a deal right? Or would you say yes because he asked you nicely? Would you buy another vehicle from that same dealer in the future or would you have formed the impression about his credibility, reasoning that he likes to make deals but does not want to stick with them. You also consider what he has done with your friends in the past and won't buy from him again. It is great if one side wants to get out of a contract but how does it affect the other side. If you sign deals and then try to get out of them later how many will trust you if they sign a contract with you in the future? The legalities of all contracts should prevail. That applies to sports contracts as well.

So you and your spouse sign a lease to rent a condo for five years. A year into the lease, the owner you rent from decides to sell the condo you live in and asks/demands you to move out. What would you do? I know what you would be doing; running down to your lawyer's office. Think about what you are suggesting (in your words ffs). Appears the legalities of simple contracts has gone right over your head. GMs offer NT clauses to players as an incentive to get the players they want to sign contracts. For you and others who feel Gillis gives out too many NT incentives, do a little work and compare the NT incentives other GMs around the league have given to players. Check out cap geek for that simple easy answer. Check out the NT incentives given to many of the super stars on each team in the league. With the exception of one or two teams most teams are on par with the Canucks in that regard. Why do players and GMs even sign contracts, if either side is not prepared to follow the tenets of the contract to the letter. The contracts are legal and binding. I thought that you would have figured that out by now ffs.

Collective feeling on Tort's 'antics'?
Benchsplinters replied to Steve Carell's topic in Canucks Talk
Watch the video again and quit with all the supposition. The Flames goon facing off did not even play the puck on the play. He practically had his gloves off before the puck hit the ice. Bieksa took the draw because he did not want Lain involved in a sure brawl. A jeweller with a jackhammer would/could have perceived what Hartley had planned and what was about to happen. Yes Torts reacted to what Hartley put on the plate and he did so with justification. Hartley would not even man up when Torts went after him verbally at the bench. His little charade "who me" attitude might go over real big with the gutless NHL bureaucracy in New York but whatever they believe, Hartley is at the centre of this BS right up to his lips. He needs to be taken to task for his actions in this as well. What coach starts his goon at centre to start the game without knowing what was going to happen? That dude couldn't carry a pail of pucks from one end of the rink to the other yet you have him face off to start the game? Give me a break. Good for Torts, good for Bieksa and good for the entire team for sticking up for themselves. And good for the Vancouver fans for supporting what the coach and entire team did. There will be some ramifications (probably one sided at best) and we may lose the battle but I am betting we win the war on this one. Someone had to step up and the whole team did. That is what green and blue should be all about when another team tries to take liberties. -

Collective feeling on Tort's 'antics'?
Benchsplinters replied to Steve Carell's topic in Canucks Talk
I agree totally. It was obvious that the Flames had the intentions of starting that game with a brawl. What impressed me most was Torts was not going to let any team dictate how a game would be played in his barn nor was he about to allow his first line players get involved with a bunch of goons who wern't sent out there to play hockey. They can say what they want about what Torts did but when I witness a coach stick up for his team like that, I am glad he is the Canuck coach. Bieksa knew that Lain was to be front and center of that brawl and stepped right up to the plate to defend a team mate. Codos to Torts and Bieksa for what they did. As a fan, I am behind them all the way. Good job boys, you both make me feel proud to be a Canuck Fan. To hell with those that see it otherwise. -
What luck would we have if it wasn't for bad luck. Hamhuis is a very good hockey player. The team just has no confidence, has had no luck, and they are down and lower than anyone can imagine. IMVHO this team is far better than what they are displaying. They need to get their heads straight and get back to the basics. That may mean Torts must change his tactics as well. The whole team right down to the waterboy needs to re-evaluate and get back on tract ASAP before this season is a waste.

Come on, the argument Gillis had nothing to do with our success to the finals doesn't even hold air and you know it. "Nah we need to get bigger. Now it is fast and big" -what does that mean? You are contradicting your self there. I agree a trade would be a good thing but who is out there? Let's not pretend and try to fool ourselves a block buster trade is going to help this team or is even out there to be had. Y You need to give away a lot more to get that premiere player and who do you have left to play with that fabulous player? How easily critic love to forget. I recall Gillis signing Mats Sundin. Look how many were critical of him for doing that and that was simply a money issue. How critical will the horde be of Gillis if he trades away the future of the team in younger players/good prospects and or draft picks. One simply has to read the garbage suggestions being proposed in these forums to realize how foolish some can be. How long will it take to reestablish what we now have before becoming an elite team once again. Liken it to spending all your pay check to buy a fabulous truck yet in doing so you can't buy food to eat or pay to have the hole in the ass of your pants mended. People here need to be more realistic before shouting out useless hair brained ideas. Be careful what you ask for or demand. The result may be worse than ever. Mark Messier and Mike Keenan pass on their warmest regards to Canuck fans.
-
What will that prove? How will it benefit our team? Who is out there that is available and a better GM? Think man but be careful what you wish for because firing Gillis is not going to help this team at this time. To much knee jerk here. Gillis got them to the SCF. This is not his fault. They do not have a leader out there right now that is willing to to step up and take charge. They miss Burrows. They miss his presence and they miss his grit. They are moping around feeling sorry for themselves an there is no one there to see them through it.

Suck doesn't even come close to describing what the team is playing like. They have lost their psychological will.
