The Official European Football (Soccer) Thread
UnkNuk replied to Scottish⑦Canuck's topic in Off-Topic General
City is in line to win three trophies this year - the League title, the FA Cup and, oh by the way, the Champions League. -
Guess that's one way to stop LeBron: In regards to the game, I don't know which I found more impressive - the way the Lakers dominated the Grizzlies in the first quarter or the way Morant tried to single-handedly get the Grizzlies back in the game in the fourth quarter.

True. But the gravy was in front of us for most of the season. And now it's being taken away! That stings. -

And, honestly, how many of us are expecting them to get even a draw against City in Manchester? -

What the hell was that all about?! Granted, it was a stirring comeback for the draw. But it should never have come down to this. And while a draw is better than a loss, they needed the three points. It was almost as if they thought: "Hey, let's make this interesting. Let's spot them two goals and see if we can come back." All is not lost but it's not looking good. -
Not a bad game to watch. But the penalty call was weak. So we don't get a Vancouver/Vancouver matchup. Too bad, but maybe best for VFC. Based on this one game, I don't think the Caps would have a problem with either of these teams. And it wouldn't do much for the confidence of VFC players to get thumped on their home grounds.

You've probably already answered this somewhere in the previous 18 pages of this thread but.... How do they calculate the cap hit after the buyout? Specifically, why is the cap hit in 25/26 and 26/27 $4.7 million while in 24/25 it's $2.3 million and in 27/28 it's $2.1 million? Why is the cap hit amount jumping around like that?

Great series. Terrific characters. Even if creator Chris Carter lost control of the plot line (or so it seems to me).

The Canadian Championships start today. Vancouver's newest team, Vancouver FC of the CPL, plays tomorrow (Wednesday) 5pm against York United. Game is streamed on One Soccer / fubo. As mentioned earlier in this thread, if Vancouver FC wins they would play the Whitecaps in the second round. Promo video about the tournament:

Tucker Carlson's entire show today was an interview with Elon Musk. There's a second part tomorrow. Here's a couple of excerpts: -
A 'give credit where credit is due' point: this lottery isn't my idea. This was an idea written about by an Athletic writer who got the idea from a reader. I just I think it's a good idea.

Hmmph! I still like the idea of linking every non-playoff team with a playoff team with the non-playoff team's draft position dependent on how well the playoff team does. I'm looking at the playoff matches and I have little or no interest in any of them. If the Canucks draft fortunes were linked to one of these teams, I definitely would be interested in watching their series.

It's convenient and inexpensive but I hardly use it. I much prefer a physical book when I'm reading. Then again, I'm old.

Yep. Back to back 2 goal leads blown. Four points shot to hell. -
And neither Vancouver team scores a goal. (Although, to be fair, both games were okay entertainment.)

Haaland scores two more and Man City beats Leicester 3-1. In so doing, he ties the EPL record for most goals scored in a single 38 game season - 32 goals. And he has eight games left to play. -

I beg your pardon? (But it is a cool crest.) -
The Whitecaps play Austin on Saturday at 5:30. As it happens, Vancouver's other and newest soccer team, Vancouver FC, opens its inaugural season in the Canadian Premier League on Saturday at 4:00. They're playing Pacific. CPL games are broadcast on OneSoccer and fubo. I'll probably check it out. To be honest, I didn't even know Vancouver had a team in the CPL until a couple of months ago. And while I was aware the CPL existed, I've never paid much attention to it. Vancouver FC will be based in Langley where, apparently, they're building a 6500 seat stadium. Let's hope Vancouver FC has more success than the Whitecaps have had up til now.

Funny how it works. If, before the season started, you had told Arsenal fans the team would finish second in the league this season, there would have been a lot of happy Arsenal fans. But if they end up finishing second after the season they've had up til now, it's going to sting. -
Once Upon a Time in Russia by Ben Mezrich A non-fiction book that reads like fiction. Mezrich goes back to the nineties and the hay day of the Russian oligarchs. His main subject - Boris Berezovsky - was one of them who rose to riches and power with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent privatization of state industries before running afoul of Vladimir Putin. Bombings, poisonings. luxurious mansions, hundreds of thousands of dollars being passed around in suitcases, small armies of body guards - really a remarkable story. Gives the reader an insight into a world that is completely foreign to most of us.

I think this is a very important point in this discussion. To provide low-cost (or no-cost) housing for those who need it, social services for those who need it, and institutionalized help for those who need it will cost a lot of money. Where is that money going to come from? It's not an exciting proposal but I think it's probably a necessary one: governments - provincially, federally and world-wide - have to review their tax rates, especially on upper income earners.
