  1. Continuing our history of Alpha Centauri expeditions to other planets: We tried to establish contact with a planet the inhabitants called "Earth" to tell them how to solve their climate crisis and other major problems, of which there were many. Unforturnately, both of our scout ships were attacked and destroyed. It was decided to forgo any further expeditions. The earthlings later destroyed themselves.
  2. Yep. Four points out of a possible nine in their last three games doesn't fill a fan with a lot of confidence.
  3. Cavallini signs with Tijuana in the Mexican League and good luck to him: This Thursday, Feb.9, 2023, Club Tijuana held a press conference for newly signed striker Lucas Cavallini. The Canadian international was recently signed by the border city club in what he revealed to be a one-year deal. The Toronto native seemed very excited and eager to be back in Liga MX after a stint in Major League Soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Cavallini said that the Liga MX and MLS are “different” and that the style of play in Mexico offers “more speed, more dynamism, and more technicality.” https://www.eastvillagetimes.com/tijuana-xolos-lucas-cavallini-excited-to-be-back-in-liga-mx/
  4. From Februay 6 to February 22, the Canadian government is matching donations to the Red Cross to a maximum of $10 million in aid to Turkey and Syria. Donations may be made here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/121799/donate/1?locale=en-CA
  5. Someone named Kat Jayme made a documentary about her search for Big Country years after the Vancouver Grizzlies ceased to exist. It can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMhM-8D-Q1o Here's a preview:
  6. It's easy to be pessimistic about the future. Climate change, war, disease. Makes one wonder what kind of world young people are going to be living in. And then you read an article like this and you're reminded that the future could be brilliant. With the advances that science, medicine and technology are making, young people might be living in a glorious world. (And if the scientists doing the above research can hurry it up, maybe some of us old-timers can be among those young people!)
  7. And speaking of Wrexham: The fourth round FA Cup replay between Wrexham and Sheffield United is on Sportsnet on Tuesday at 11:30am.
  8. Looking forward to Man City vs Wrexham in the National League next season.
  9. I only caught the second half of the game. And it was only near the end of the game that I realized that Haaland was playing. Thankfully, he seemed to be relatively non-existent. The announcers were commenting on it late in the game.
  10. China Condemns U.S. Decision to Shoot Down Spy Balloon The Chinese government said the downing of the “civilian” aircraft was an “excessive reaction,” and that it “retains the right to respond further.” https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/02/04/us/china-spy-balloon So tell us, China - how would you react to a US balloon sailing over your country?
  11. Yep - the ol' new manager bounce. Although it's not like Arsenal was asleep at the wheel. 71% possession for Arsenal vs 29% possession for Everton? How did they manage to lose?
  12. Serves Chelsea right for skimping on their spending during this last transfer window! https://talksport.com/football/1318050/premier-league-spending-january-smash-new-record-deadline-chelsea-arsenal-newcastle-fernandez-mudryk-gordon-trossard/ Which club spent the most in January? It won’t come as a surprise to learn that Chelsea were the biggest spenders by a long way, accounting for 37% of the total league spend. The Blues broke the British transfer record to sign World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez on deadline day for a fee of £106.5million. In total, Chelsea spent almost £300million to bring in eight players in January, with other big names including Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke joining the club. Their total spend was more than Ligue 1, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and the Championship combined.
  13. The 2023 Club World Cup game between the Seattle Sounders and Al Ahly of Egypt is on Saturday at 9am. Apparently the game will be televised through something called FIFA+, a free streaming service. A link can be found here: https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/watch/5ilVFu2aw6LokJgkNKIoUU?cid=(p_go-box)(c_FIFAPlus)(sc_archive)(ssc_)(da_)(co_)(cc_)&s_cid=(co_)(cc_)&c=(c_FIFAPlus)(sc_archive)(ssc_)(cc_)&pid=(p_go-box)(ch_)(t_) Should Seattle win, they would then go on to face Real Madrid, no less! https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/club-world-cup-seattle-sounders-to-face-egypt-s-al-ahly-in-round-two I have mixed feelings about all of this. As a Whitecap fan, it's hard to see Seattle have so much success. But it would be cool to see an MLS team do well in this competition.
  14. And in other Arsenal news: "Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has penned a new long-term four-and-a-half year deal with the Gunners to extend his stay at the Emirates until the summer of 2027." https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/martinelli-arsenal-new-contract-arteta-29119766?utm_source=mirror_newsletter&utm_campaign=arsenal_fc_newsletter2&utm_medium=email&pure360.trackingid=d083d551-a419-44bb-9a23-04c26d4d9b9c
  15. Just noticed that Arsenal is playing Everton on Saturday at 4:15am. The game was originally scheduled back in September but was postponed.
  16. You lost 10 pounds from not drinking??? Is the wine and champagne you drink mixed in with a box of chocolates?
  17. Probably true. Which is unfortunate. Because the more greenhouse gases we pump into the atmosphere, the worse the consequences will be. At least according to people who know about these things. We seem to be in a pickle.
  18. I just looked at the standings. I didn't realize the Islanders were actually lurking around the 13 spot. If these were the final standings with no changes in the Lottery, the Canucks would have the 6 and 14 picks in the Draft.
  19. What should we be hoping for: The Islanders end up with the thirteenth (or lower) pick in this year's Draft which reverts to Vancouver or The Islanders end up with the twelfth (or higher) pick in this year's Draft, keep it, and we get their first rounder in 2024?
  20. That makes sense. But wouldn't it be funny if JR and the Islanders' management are confused on this point as well? Could have a brawl after the lottery!
  21. There seems to be some confusion here about this (or maybe it's just me!). Does the protection kick in before or after the draft lottery?
  22. I'm wondering whether they have an inside line to the KHL? Maybe a couple of other older players are ready to come to North America to play in the NHL next season and want to play in Vancouver? Especially since Kuzmenko was treated pretty well.
