  1. I dunno. At the time, I didn't think it was a penalty. But I suppose it's possible that PGMOL chief Howard Webb knows more about these things than I do.
  2. From the article: The petition further alleges that the Tuohys used their power as conservators to strike a deal that paid them and their two birth children millions of dollars in royalties from an Oscar-winning film that earned more than $300 million, while Oher got nothing for a story "that would not have existed without him." and Sean Tuohy told the Daily Memphian website that he was stunned by Oher's allegations and said the Tuohys "didn't make any money off the movie," only a share of proceeds from Michael Lewis' book, which was the foundation for the film. So none of the main people involved in the story got any money from the movie proceeds? Talk about a blind side.
  3. Arsenal fear serious knee injury for Jurrien Timber after leaving opening day match against Nottingham Forest Arsenal fear that defender Jurrien Timber has suffered a major knee injury that could sideline him for an extended spell of his first season with the Gunners, according to CBS Sports sources. Timber limped out of Arsenal's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend of the season, going down under no pressure from his opponent after an awkward movement in his knee. The Dutch international underwent initial scans on Monday but it could take several days before a defined timescale for his recovery becomes clear. It is believed that further examinations may be needed to ascertain whether Timber suffered any meniscus damage. Should it prove to be an ACL injury, however, Timber would be facing a significant spell on the sidelines. https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/arsenal-fear-serious-knee-injury-for-jurrien-timber-after-leaving-opening-day-match-against-nottingham-forest/

  5. I caught the second half of that game. Based on that, I thought United stole the game. Wolves deserved at least a draw. But, being the Wolves, they just couldn't score when they had a chance while United pounced on their opportunity.
  6. One thing: how do these comfort animals react if the plane runs into severe turbulence?
  7. I tried to bring my comfort skunk with me on the bus the other day. The driver refused to let me on. Callous jerk.
  8. Chelsea and Liverpool tied 1-1 in the marquee game of Week 1. At this early point, probably the best result for the other major contenders.
  9. A decent opening game for Arsenal, I thought. The three newcomers were adequate - nothing remarkably special but nothing really bad either. Rice was the most noticeable of the three. Hopefully, Timber's injury isn't serious. Terrific goal by Saka. I had a mixed reaction to Forest's goal. On the one hand, I didn't like to see it. On the other, it livened up the second half that was, til then, somewhat like watching paint dry. Forest seemed content to defend their two goal deficit and Arsenal was in no rush to do anything. But after the goal, things got interesting. At any rate, one game down, 37 to go. Next up, Crystal Palace.
  10. The Minnesota/Toluca game will be broadcast on TSN on Tuesday at 5pm. Could be entertaining as Toluca has scored 4 goals in each of their three games thus far in the Leagues Cup.
  11. I'm looking forward to seeing them play, too. A few weeks ago I made a post saying I didn't think the Caps would make the playoffs this season. Of their remaining 12 games, 8 are on the road. And the Caps have a very poor road record. Maybe Adekube and Laryea can change that.
  12. Queretaro won their match against New England on PKs and will advance to the Leagues Cup quarter finals. Which is neither here nor there. But I was watching the game and one of Queretaro's forwards looked familiar. I then realized (after the announcers mentioned it) that it was former Whitecaps player Camilo Sanvezzo. I was surprised he was still playing soccer. He started the game and played for about eighty minutes before being subbed off. Got me to thinking about him and checked out Wikipedia. He played three seasons for the Caps, from 2011-2013. His first year here was good, he dropped off during his second season and then was great during his final season here. He actually won the MLS Golden Boot award in 2013 with 22 goals(!). After that third season something went awry in his relationship with the team and he signed with Queretaro even though he was still under contract with the Whitecaps. The move was eventually finalized and that was that. The Whitecaps best scoring player was gone. Over the years, he bounced around the Mexican League for a bit before eventually winding up back at Queretaro. Consider, though, what might have happened had he stayed. He's 35 and still starting for a first division Mexican team. Which means he could still be playing in MLS. We could have used his goals through those years.
  13. Ryan Reynolds to receive Order of British Columbia, province announces on B.C. Day Actor Ryan Reynolds tops the list of 14 notable British Columbians who will receive the province's highest honour this year. The Deadpool star was announced as an Order of B.C. recipient Monday, as the province marked the B.C. 14. Miami 4 Dallas 4 Miami wins on PKs Another game. Another win for Miami. Another two goals for Messi. (He now has 7 in four games.) But Dallas had them. Leading by two goals with about 10 minutes left in the game, Dallas had them. And then they let them go. One of the strangest own goals you'll see wherein a Dallas player looked like he forgot what team he was playing for and headed the ball into his own net. And then Messi scores late from a free kick to tie the game. He also scored the opening goal of the game. A very entertaining game. It's too bad Apple didn't release it to network tv. A game like this could only generate more interest in their Season Ticket package.
  15. First trophy win of the season! Hopefully, the first of several!
  16. Body Heat A 1981 film noir drama about a lawyer (William Hurt) who meets a very attractive woman (Kathleen Turner) who is unhappily married to her rich husband. 4* out of 5.
  17. Tigres 1 Vancouver 1 Tigres wins on PKs. And so much for that. An entertaining game, especially the first half-hour wherein both teams were motoring back and forth. The game then settled. Both goals were well taken - Vite scoring early in the first half and Tigres tying it up in the second. A sparse crowd, the majority of whom seemed to be cheering for Tigres. So it's on to the Round of 16 for Tigres and on to waiting for the MLS season to start up again for the Whitecaps.
  18. The Whitecaps game tonight will not be available on network tv. However, should you be in the mood for some Leagues Cup soccer, TSN1 will be showing the Chicago/America game at 5pm and the Portland/Monterrey game at 7pm.
  19. From the G&M's Andrew Coyne: "All of which is dog-bites-man stuff next to what is implied by Mr. Grusch’s story. Which is this: after travelling hundreds of thousands of years at a tenth of the speed of light (oh, they’ve mastered light-speed you say? Okay, make it 32,000 years) in whatever type of craft that could possibly be, having navigated safely through the cosmos en route to our microscopic speck of a planet, they arrive here and – wouldn’t you just know it – crash." 20. https://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/who-are-tigres-uanl Who are Tigres UANL? An inside look at Friday's opponents On Friday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their Leagues Cup 2023 campaign in the Round of 32 against a familiar foe in LIGA MX side Tigres UANL. Kickoff from BC Place is set for 7:30 p.m. PT, with tickets available at whitecapsfc.com/tickets. To get you set for Friday's match, we take a deep dive at Tigres, their key pieces, our history with them, and much more. Who are Tigres UANL? One of the favourites to win Leagues Cup 2023. They are a powerhouse, and if you make a mistake, they have the quality throughout their team to punish you. Just ask MLSsoccer.com expert analyst Matt Doyle, who has them as the second favourite to win the Leagues Cup. This is a big challenge for the 'Caps, but they will be up for it. History against Tigres In 2017, the 'Caps made it all the way to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions League, taking on Tigres UANL, the giants of the region and the highest spending club. The 'Caps battled valiantly. After a 2-0 defeat in Mexico, the Blue & White scored inside the first five minutes at BC Place to cut it to 2-1. They had chances to tie it as well, but ultimately Tigres proved too strong and won the second leg 2-1, taking it 4-1 on aggregate. Who are their key players? Interestingly, while Whitecaps FC only have only have one player remaining from their 2017 roster, there are a few players still with Tigres that featured for them back in April 2017 at BC Place. This includes starting goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán, fullback Javier Aquino, defensive midfielder Guido Pizarro, and of course striker André-Pierre Gignac. Also, winger Luis Quiñones played against the ‘Caps in the first leg in Monterrey. The ageless Gignac, a former French national team star, is highly regarded as one of the very best strikers in the region, even at the age of 37, while the 32-year-old Quiñones is as crafty a winger as they come. This year they also added 23-year-old Mexican prodigy Diego Lainez, who famously joined Alphonso Davies in speaking to FIFA congress to help bring the 2026 World Cup to North America. What happens next? The winner of Friday's match will advance to play the winner of Portland Timbers and CF Monterrey of LIGA MX in the Round of 16. Should the 'Caps play Monterrey, the match will be played at BC Place this coming Tuesday, August 8. If the 'Caps play Portland, it will be played at Providence Park.

The loan agreement includes an option to purchase.
