  1. I'm not going to pretend to understand it but it sounds pretty interesting!
  2. Any opinions on how serious this would be if it came to pass? https://www.wsj.com/articles/saudi-arabia-considers-accepting-yuan-instead-of-dollars-for-chinese-oil-sales-11647351541 Saudi Arabia Considers Accepting Yuan Instead of Dollars for Chinese Oil Sales Excerpts: Saudi Arabia is in active talks with Beijing to price some of its oil sales to China in yuan, people familiar with the matter said, a move that would dent the U.S. dollar’s dominance of the global petroleum market and mark another shift by the world’s top crude exporter toward Asia. and The Saudi move could chip away at the supremacy of the U.S. dollar in the international financial system, which Washington has relied on for decades to print Treasury bills it uses to finance its budget deficit. “The oil market, and by extension the entire global commodities market, is the insurance policy of the status of the dollar as reserve currency,” said economist Gal Luft, co-director of the Washington-based Institute for the Analysis of Global Security who co-wrote a book about de-dollarization. “If that block is taken out of the wall, the wall will begin to collapse.”
  3. I don't follow golf all that closely but I came across this story which might interest some: https://www.si.com/golf-archives/2022/02/17/saudi-arabia-golf-tour-explained The biggest story in men’s golf right now is the emergence of a potential challenger to the PGA Tour. Rumors of a rival tour have been simmering for years now, but things have really picked up steam in recent weeks. Talk of a breakaway tour has been dominating the Genesis Invitational this week at Riviera. It’s called the SGL, for Super Golf League, but the “S” might as well stand for Saudi. The Middle Eastern kingdom is funding the effort through its Public Investment Fund, a government-run wealth fund. The PIF is the primary investor in a company called LIV Golf Investments, which in October announced golf great Greg Norman as its CEO. LIV has pledged to pump $200 million into the Asian Tour but the SGL is the bigger story...
  4. So what have we been for the last ten years? (Sorry Coco. I know you mean we have to continue to be patient. We really have no choice. But I just couldn't resist.)
  5. I get a bit lost in musical terminology. But the Jazz Fest has a pretty eclectic lineup. And its organizer is The Coastal Jazz and Blues Society. So it's quite possible there would be some acts you might like.
  6. I was aware of the Festival for years but didn't pay much attention to it. Then, in the last few (pre-covid) years I started checking it out. It's pretty cool. They bring in artists from around the world to play at different venues. And they also stage free concerts on the weekends - downtown outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery and at David Lam Park. I saw some pretty entertaining acts. It's on this year from June 24 to July 3. If you're around in Vancouver it's well worth checking out.
  7. I hope these things can be resolved. I enjoy going downtown or to David Lam Park on a sunny day and listening to the performances. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-dual-crises-put-vancouver-jazz-festivals-future-in-jeopardy/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=Morning Update&utm_content=2022-2-16_6&utm_term=Morning Update: Ottawa pushing ahead with Emergencies Act as border protests end&utm_campaign=newsletter&cu_id=t7%2BP3rI%2Bt%2FYx5Iui%2B6yRZxVYYZ6TE%2BGK "The future of Vancouver’s jazz festival is in question with news its main sponsor plans to stop funding the event at the same time as a bitter boardroom drama has spilled into the public."
  8. Just in case anyone was concerned: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-even-if-plants-experience-consciousness-that-doesnt-mean-we-should/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=Globe Opinion&utm_content=2022-2-19_17&utm_term=Even if plants experience consciousness, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating them&utm_campaign=newsletter&cu_id=t7%2BP3rI%2Bt%2FYx5Iui%2B6yRZxVYYZ6TE%2BGK Even if plants experience consciousness, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating them “Every day, thousands of innocent plants are killed by vegetarians. Help end the violence. Eat meat.” These words, written last month by an Edinburgh butcher on a blackboard outside his shop and shared on a vegan Facebook group, led to a heated online discussion. Some condemned the butcher for seeking to blur an important line between beings capable of suffering and those that are not. Others took it as a joke, as the butcher said he had intended it. But jokes can make serious points.
  9. I don't think any publication is concerned about links to their articles. In fact, I would guess they would welcome it. It attracts readers to their site. It's when someone starts to copy and paste the entire article to a site such as this that they might object. But, then again, I'm not a copyright lawyer.
  10. One other thought about Valieva: IF she is found to have used performance enhancing drugs, suspicion will also fall on her coach, Eteri Tutberidze. Who also coaches Anna Shcherbakova, the gold medal winner, and Alexandra Trusova, the silver medal winner. Hence, suspicion will fall on them as well. And what about all the other young women who have spent years training (presumably drug free) for an event like this? They may have been cheated out of winning an Olympic medal. The whole thing is just such an unfortunate mess.

  12. Another article from SI about Kamila Valieva: Kamila Valieva’s Collapse Was a Fitting End to a Controversial Olympics BEIJING — And finally, after the worst week of her life culminated in the worst performance of her life, after she became the face of a problem she did not cause, after an eye chart’s worth of international organizations took her to court, after every adult around her failed her, the child listened, weeping, as her coach yelled at her. “Why did you let it go?” Eteri Tutberidze demanded. “Explain it to me—why? Why did you stop fighting? You let it go after that axel. Why?” Kamila Valieva did not answer. https://www.si.com/olympics/2022/02/17/kamila-valieva-collapse-fitting-end-to-controversial-olympics?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_3733684
  13. From the article: “This will be one of the largest genetics data sets ever produced for dogs, and it will be a powerful resource not only to understand the role of genetics in aging, but also to answer more fundamental questions about the evolutionary history and domestication of dogs. That should be interesting. I've heard that all dogs descend from some version of wolves and due to man's domestication and breeding of dogs we've ended up with this: I'm not sure I'm buying it. If you didn't know these two animals were 'dogs' would you even think they were part of the same species?
  14. An article from "Sports Illustrated" arguing that it's time to raise the minimum age to compete in women's figure skating: https://www.si.com/olympics/2022/02/17/olympics-figure-skating-age-minimums BEIJING — Kamila Valieva should not be skating at the Olympics. Not just because she failed a drug test taken Christmas Day. Not just because she competes for the Russian Olympic Committee, a shell corporation for Russia. Not just because this whole event has become a sham. Valieva should not be skating at the Olympics because she is 15 years old.
  15. "Wow" indeed! So I'm casually looking through various threads in the Off-Topic Forum and I come across this and I just about fell out of my chair. This is a huge story and an alarming increase in anti-pipeline protests. The government already has the Emergency Act being debated. If passed, wonder if it will also be used here? The story has so many implications - climate protests, First Nations, civic disruptions. Wow.
  16. And even with all that scrutiny and criticism she still finished first in the Short Program. That's a tough-minded young woman.
  17. I agree. Seems to me there's two related questions here: Should we tear the statue down and who should decide whether it should be torn down? I'm uncomfortable with a small group of people taking it upon themselves to make such decisions, even if I may agree with their point of view.
  18. Ah, but if she wins, as she probably will, she won't get a medal. At least, not right away. For that matter, if the Russians sweep the podium in women's figure skating, as they may well do, none of them will immediately get a medal. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************* Russian Figure Skater Can Compete but Won’t Receive Medals Arbitrators cleared Kamila Valieva to continue competing in the Beijing Olympics despite failing a doping test, but officials said they would withhold medals until her case was resolved. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/14/sports/olympics/kamila-valieva-ruling.html?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20220214&instance_id=0&nl=breaking-news&ref=cta&regi_id=56405277&segment_id=82661&user_id=dc88543b79693b0f05322365a827e237 *********************************************************************************************************************************************************** For those who might be interested in watching this circus event, the Short Program is supposed to air early Tuesday morning at 2:00am PST. There are 30 skaters entered. Valieva is #26. Gotta get my PVR set.
  19. And now it's eight. At this rate, why even bother playing the game? Just call the two captains out, flip the coin and award the Superbowl.
  20. I don't really care who wins this game. I have good feelings about both teams. But I do want an entertaining game, thanks.
  21. Gonna be interesting to see what they decide: BEIJING (AP) — Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will find out Monday if she can compete at the Olympics in the women’s competition, which starts a day later. The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Saturday the expedited hearing on Valieva’s doping case will be held Sunday night in Beijing, with a ruling by Monday afternoon. https://www.si.com/olympics/2022/02/12/kamila-valieva-doping-case-sunday-decision-monday-figure-skating?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_3699863 ********************************************************************************************************************************************************* Meanwhile someone named Stephanie Apstein has her opinions on the issue. An excerpt: BEIJING — Finally, a reprieve from talking about Russia’s cheating at the Olympics! This time, it’s the Russian Olympic Committee’s cheating at the Olympics. Eight years after Team Russia ran a sophisticated state-sanctioned doping program that involved passing dirty samples through a hole in a wall, and two years after it was punished by having to call itself by a ridiculous acronym containing the word Russia and wear a marginally modified version of the Russian flag, we are doing this again. It’s hard to believe those crippling sanctions did not teach Russia a lesson! https://www.si.com/olympics/2022/02/11/kamila-valieva-russian-figure-skating-failed-drug-test-ioc?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_3699863
  22. An interesting post, 6. But will hosting these Olympics change anyone's mind about China? Is someone going to say "Hey, that was an exciting snowboard competition. Maybe the CCP isn't all that bad!"
  23. The kid should really start working out more. This photo of Georgia signee Branson Robinson, a 17 year old running back, is making the rounds on twitter: https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2022/02/10/georgia-branson-robinson-running-back-recruit-jacked-weight-lifting?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_3683746
  24. But given our history with residential schools, doesn't that make it harder for us to start preaching to China about minority rights? Maybe, instead of lecturing China about human rights we should just try giving them some friendly advice: "Hey, China, good job on the Olympics. Oh, say, about the Uighurs and some of your other minorities. You know, we tried to do that cultural assimilation thing on our First Nations. Didn't work out too well. You might want to try something different."
