The Official European Football (Soccer) Thread

Would be a nice improvement although I'm still impressed that linesmen get it right as often as they do. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/offside-rule-football-robot-referee-26184903?utm_source=mirror_newsletter&utm_campaign=arsenal_fc_newsletter2&utm_medium=email&pure360.trackingid=d083d551-a419-44bb-9a23-04c26d4d9b9c FIFA chiefs are bringing in new technology which will make offside decisions within THREE SECONDS. The revolutionary semi-automated offsides are being trialled at the Club World Cup and could be brought in for the World Cup in Qatar by the end of the year. -
Yet another small step on the on the nuclear fusion front: https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/09/uk/nuclear-fusion-climate-energy-scn-intl/index.html (CNN)There's no silver bullet to the climate crisis, but nuclear fusion may be the closest thing to it. In the quest for a near-limitless, zero-carbon source of reliable power, scientists have generated fusion energy before, but they have struggled for decades to sustain it for very long. On Wednesday, however, scientists working in the United Kingdom announced that they more than doubled the previous record for generating and sustaining nuclear fusion, which is the same process that allows the sun and stars to shine so brightly.

I hope it does turn out to be something like this. Kamila Valieva is, IMO, one of the star attractions of these Olympics. I watched her performances in these team events and was looking forward to see whether she would break her own World Records in the short and long program. It would be quite disappointing to find out she was doing it with drugs.
-
Now there's an Olympic sport! Is that for real? How does a person practice doing those different things without getting killed?

Seems like you're not the only one: https://www.si.com/olympics/2022/02/08/nbc-on-track-lowest-tv-ratings-winter-olympics-beijing?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_3667641 NBC on Track for Lowest-Rated Winter Olympics in American Television History

Well, this doesn't sound good. Hopefully, Canada is simply being extra-cautious. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawa-warns-canadians-to-leave-ukraine-over-fears-of-russian-invasion/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=Breaking News&utm_content=2022-2-7_22&utm_term=Ottawa warns Canadians to leave Ukraine over fears of Russian invasion&utm_campaign=newsletter&cu_id=t7%2BP3rI%2Bt%2FYx5Iui%2B6yRZxVYYZ6TE%2BGK Ottawa is telling Canadians to immediately leave Ukraine in the anticipation of a Russian invasion. A warning was issued Monday to Canadians who are registered with the department of Global Affairs, telling them to get out of the country on the first available flight and to avoid travel to Ukraine, a senior government official confirmed. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the source because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

I was also a fan back when Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve were racing. And then I realized, despite all the glamour of F1 and the sexy cars, it was kind of boring. Hardly any passing back then. The main determinents of winning seemed to be pole position and how well the pit crews changed tires during the race. Has anything changed?
-
I was watching these races. It was one of the 500m quarterfinal races. Three Canadians just happened to be drawn into the five person race. From what I've seen, short track speed skating is kind of like roller derby on ice. There seems to be a lot of falls and video reviews and disqualifications. But if this one is as bad as it looks, it was a pretty unsavory move by the Chinese skater. The Canadian who was tripped (#50) was actually advanced to the semis despite not finishing in the top two. So two Canadians did advance to the semis. And the Chinese skater didn't make it to the semis. So at least that worked out okay. And Kim Bouton, #35 in the clip, eventually went on to win Bronze in the event!

Very! I never watch snowboarding but that was entertaining. Weird terminology, though. Congrats to our guys!

Ah! Okay. I was concentrating on the ethics question. Yes, you're right - the Olympics have had a history of being intertwined with politics.
-
But in those cases we're talking about *countries* boycotting the games. That's not what's happening here. As I mentioned, if the Canadian government had decided to boycott the games and refused to send any athletes then I would understand the idea of not watching the Olympics. But that's not what happened. We are sending our athletes. And it doesn't make much sense to me to say: We'll send our athletes but we're not going to watch them.
-
It's an interesting ethical question: To watch the Beijing winter Olympics or not to watch the Beijing winter Olympics? If you watch some short track speed skating, are you condoning the CCP's treatment of the Uighurs? If you watch the Canadian women play a hockey game, are you supporting China's possible take-over of Taiwan? I dunno. Had the Canadian government refused to allow Canadian athletes to go to the Olympics, I think the case would be stronger for boycotting them. But that the government is simply not sending some government officials over to watch the Olympics - meh. So what are we doing - sending our athletes there to compete but telling ourselves not to watch them? Seems kind of contradictory. One other general thing, I don't like the way politics seems to be seeping into everything nowadays. While I'm interested in politics, I like to take a break from all the political stuff. The fact that we can't even watch some entertaining sports nowadays without having a political shade thrown over them is a real buzz-kill. But it's an interesting question and I hope others here will chime in with their opinions.

"The Cleveland Browns on Wednesday denied claims made by former head coach Hue Jackson that he was rewarded monetarily for losing games in order to get a higher pick in the NFL Draft. "The recent comments by Hue Jackson and his representatives relating to his tenure as our head coach are completely fabricated," a Browns' spokesperson said in a statement. "Any accusation that any member of our organization was incentivized to deliberately lose games is categorically false."" https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/02/sport/hue-jackson-nfl-cleveland-browns-spt/index.html Well, this should give football reporters something to talk about in the two weeks to the Superbowl.

Three straight wins in this window. Without Alphonso. Not bad, boys, not bad. -
Well, since this thread has jumped to our attention - maybe someone with a bit of initiative should start a 2022 Olympics thread?

So far, so good. https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/jwst-canadians-1.6319289 There's been a lot of breath-holding since the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) launched on Dec. 25, but now astronomers can exhale: The $10-billion US telescope safely reached its destination Monday afternoon. "We're just really excited to announce today that Webb is officially on station at its L2 orbit," Keith Parrish, Webb observatory commissioning manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center said in a media teleconference. "This is just capping off a remarkable 30 days." Lagrange Points are a kind of sweet spot in space where there is a pull between two objects like the sun and Earth and spacecraft can operate in either a stable or semi-stable orbit. Webb will sit at Lagrangian Point 2, or L2.

Now, if they would only ask the Ukrainians how they think of Ukraine.

It's a cliche but, still, it's really too bad one of those quarterbacks had to lose. That was an amazing demonstration of quarterbacking!

This is what makes the trade easier to take. If the trade had been initiated by the club I'd be wondering what the heck they were doing - trading away one of the best goalkeepers in the league. And to a Conference rival. But since they're trying to accomodate a player in a seemingly difficult situation, you can't really fault the team. Still and all, it's an unfortunate way to start off the new season. All eyes now on Thomas Hasal.

Some of them looked pretty cool. But "No" to the Cowboys.
