  1. I was surprised (not in a good way) when I read the rumours about this. Apparently, Crepeau was the one who requested a trade: https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/source-lafc-in-advanced-talks-to-acquire-maxime-crepeau-from-vancouver-whitecaps "A source adds the deal would be worth around $1 million in General Allocation Money. Crepeau conveyed a desire to be traded away from Vancouver, citing family reasons. He was not with the club when they kicked off preseason this week, with the Whitecaps saying that absence was for personal reasons."
  2. It's a big problem. If Russia were to invade, would Canadians be in favour of Canadian soldiers (via NATO) going to Ukraine with some of them being killed? That's the same question that Biden is asking himself in regards to American soldiers being killed. I've read reports that the Russians could (fairly) easily take over Ukraine but then they would have to hold onto it. Speculation is that there would be guerilla attacks on Russian soldiers. And it's not clear how Russians would react to the death of Russian soldiers. This sounds like an invasion that wouldn't really benefit anyone.
  3. And Tim Cowlishaw, who covers the Cowboys for the Dallas Morning News, thinks the Cowboys need to fire McCarthy in order to keep Dan Quinn in house as the new HC and prevent him from getting poached by another team. https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/cowboys/2022/01/17/after-playoff-disaster-dallas-cowboys-need-to-fire-mike-mccarthy-promote-dan-quinn-to-head-coach/ Lot of speculation. But the only opinion that counts is Jerry's.
  4. From the article: Engineering teams in the James Webb Space Telescope's control room cheered as confirmation came back that its final wing was deployed and latched into place. Can only imagine the anticipation and stress these people are going through as they await each process getting started. This project has been underway for decades and has cost billions of dollars. You don't want your part of the project to fail and jeopardize the entire project.
  5. Not #1??? Only top 3??? Sounds like you've had an interesting (albeit hairy) life, Ilunga.
  6. From CNET: All the big space events to WATCH in 2022
  7. CBC recently aired a documentary about Gerald Cotten and his QuadrigaCX Bitcoin exchange. Cotten was the guy who (may have) died on his honeymoon in India in 2018. Shortly thereafter it was discovered that tens of millions of dollars that were in his exchange were unaccounted for. https://gem.cbc.ca/media/dead-mans-switch-a-crypto-mystery/s01e01
  8. Looks like Toronto is getting ready for the new season. From Sam Jones' MLS newsletter: ************************************************************************************************************** 3. Here comes Insigne Hey, speaking of throwing money at the problem. Napoli and Italy national team attacker Lorenzo Insigne has reportedly agreed to terms with Toronto FC and would join the Reds this summer. Reporter Michael Singh tweeted that the deal is finalized, citing sources, with the 30-year-old Napoli captain set to join TFC after the expiration of his Serie A contract in June. According to Fabrizio Romano, the move is somewhere around a five-year deal worth about $13 million per season, with another $5 million in bonuses. This…this is a coup. Insigne is one of the best players in Serie A. He's coming off a season where he scored 19 times and delivered eight assists. In Serie A. He'll be turning 31 by the time he reaches Toronto, but he can still ball at a world-class level and Toronto reportedly came with the best offer for him. There's still all the normal quality of life reasons that major European talents want to come to MLS, that hasn't changed. But Toronto are coming in with legitimately league-altering money here. The reported $13 million number is more than double Carlos Vela's league-leading salary and more than all but nine MLS teams' *total payroll* last season. This is the kind of move that pushes the league to a place it simply hasn't been before. Now, it certainly helps that they're picking up Insigne out of contract. No transfer fee means more money can go elsewhere. But plenty of players have come to MLS for free. The repercussions of this one are going to be big. We're nearing the next step of what MLS point 0 we're on now. Oh, and did I mention he's really, really good? This is a transformative move for Toronto. After floundering for a year, they've recovered by snagging Bob Bradley, putting themselves on the verge of one of the biggest signings in MLS history and by working to change the makeup of their roster at top. Jozy Altidore may be gone and Yeferson Soteldo may be gone and Lorenzo Insigne may be in. That won't solve all their problems, but it will leave a third DP spot open. And it's not like they aren't willing to make moves to sure up the rest of their lineup. Folks, I'm asking you once again to be very frightened of just how good Toronto FC can be.
  9. From the article: Every day, Earth is bombarded by roughly 25 million bits of interplanetary debris, totaling more than 100 tons of dust and sand-sized particles. Gonna have to start wearing a hard hat when I go outside.
  10. One of my favourite movies. When it first came out, many years ago, the special effects were mind-blowing for that time. Still looks pretty good today.
  11. According to whoever calculates these stats, the Canucks still only have a 1 in 7 chance of making the playoffs. But considering that they had a 1 in 25 chance not so long ago, things are getting interesting. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-nhl-predictions/?cid=rrpromo
  12. One of the coolest parts of that broadcast (which has many cool moments) occurs at the 1:50:00 mark when the JWST detaches from the last portion of the rocket. A camera on that last portion shows the JWST as it flies away on the start of its mission.
  13. But do dark matter and dark energy exist? I know DM and DE have been proposed as possible explanations for observed phenomena. But I don't believe either has been actually detected yet. Maybe they don't exist. It wouldn't surprise me if some second Einstein comes out of left field with a new explanation for the expanding universe that does away with the concept of DM and DE. Then again, what do I know about astrophysics? Not very much.
  14. Not sure if it will answer your question but I found this article interesting: http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/about-us/102-the-universe/cosmology-and-the-big-bang/the-big-bang/594-how-has-light-from-13-billion-years-ago-not-passed-us-by-beginner
  15. Yep. That's one of the things that I find fascinating about this launch. Here's a short video about the deployment process that will be involved just to get the telescope ready. If any of these processes don't work as planned, the whole project will be in jeopardy. Apparently, It'll be about six months before the JWST starts sending any hard data back to earth.
  16. You know, it's bad enough that robots are taking people's jobs. But when they start out-dancing us on the dance floor, it's really too much!

  18. The James Webb Space Telescope is now scheduled for takeoff (weather permitting) on early Christmas morning - 4:20AM PST. And given that it has cost about $10 billion US, let's hope that everything goes smoothly! Here's an eight minute video from cnet that gives an overview of the project. And this G&M article includes info on Canada's contribution to the project: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-james-webb-space-telescope-set-to-reveal-universes-outer-limits-to-a/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=Morning Update&utm_content=2021-12-22_6&utm_term=Morning Update: Quebec considers asking hospital workers with COVID-19 to stay on the job&utm_campaign=newsletter&cu_id=t7%2BP3rI%2Bt%2FYx5Iui%2B6yRZxVYYZ6TE%2BGK
  19. Siberia Willem Dafoe stars in a 98 minute metaphor about something or other. Beats me. But I enjoyed it. After all, any movie that includes someone quoting Nietzsche; Del Shannon's "Runaway"; and a fish talking in Russian has to be worth a look. Right?
  20. Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you judge him, you'll be a mile away from him. And you'll have his shoes.
  21. How big is your tv? I have a 4k 49inch tv and, watching a hockey game for instance, I sometimes switch between the 4k Sportsnet channel and the high-def channel and I honestly don't see very much difference in picture quality.
  22. Or, because these things are all relative, perhaps we're moving away from them faster than light speed.
  23. And I don't blame him! That is some pretty weird stuff!
