I see what you did there. (Very clever.)

Maybe if Mbappe signs that Saudi deal he can send them both a few bucks.

22 minutes into the game: Messi 2 Atlanta 0

Probably. But given athletes' salaries nowadays, you'd have to pay the players an awful lot for them to jeopardize their careers.

Wellllll.................granted he didn't go to play there. But he has taken money from Saudi Arabia: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/18/sports/soccer/lionel-messi-saudi-arabia.html The details of Messi’s role as a well-compensated pitchman for Saudi Arabia are contained in a previously undisclosed version of his contract with the tourism authority that was reviewed by The New York Times. The contract shows that Messi could receive as much as 22.5 million euros, about $25 million, over three years for little actual work: a few commercial appearances, a handful of social media posts and some all-expenses-paid vacations to the kingdom with his family and children. He is expected to share images of those trips — marked with a Saudi-approved hashtag — with his vast online following. But the document also contains a condition important to Saudi officials: Messi cannot say anything that might “tarnish” Saudi Arabia, a country that has faced widespread criticism for its human rights record. -

That's what's being reported in a couple of unfamiliar (to me) sports websites. I can't believe that's accurate. Kylian Mbappe could earn £605million for just one season's work in Saudi Arabia if he joins Al Hilal. https://talksport.com/football/1509661/kylian-mbappe-wages-al-hilal-saudi-arabia-psg/ -

Nice thought. But Aston Villa signed him. -

Leon 2 Vancouver 2 (Leon wins 16:15(!!!) on penalty kicks) That's a tough loss for Vancouver after a penalty kick marathon. They needed the win. Their second and last game in the group stage is against the LA Galaxy in LA. Given the Whitecaps poor road record that game is probably going to end in a loss. And just like that, the Whitecaps will be out of the competition and will sit around for the next several weeks waiting for the MLS season to restart. On a positive note, I'm beginning to change my opinion of Cordova.

Of course. Messi comes on at around the 55 minute mark. He makes a few nice passes. And then scores the winning goal in the last seconds of extra time off a free kick. Miami 2 Cruz Azul 1
-
And while I'm talking about the Leagues Cup - Miami plays Cruz Azul in their first game in the tournament on Friday at 5:00. It's anticipated that Messi will make his debut in this game. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the game will only be available on Apple+.

[Official] Canada’s Women National Football Team (Soccer)
UnkNuk replied to StanleyCupOneDay's topic in Off-Topic General
Not a total disaster. But still disappointing. The problem, it seems to me (without knowing much about Women's soccer), is Australia. While Canada is ranked 7th in the world, Australia is 10th. With the home crowd behind them, I'm thinking it's most probably an Australia win in that game. So now a lot depends on how Canada and Nigeria (ranked 40th) do against Ireland (ranked 22nd). We could end up in a tie for second place and have to depend on whatever tiebreaker they use (goal difference, I assume). Anyways, game on! -

0-0 at the half. Canada has a lot of the possession but aren't doing much with it. A draw in this game isn't satisfactory. And, even worse, this is the type of game that a team on the back foot for most of the game goes down and scores a goal and steals the game. Need a goal, women, need a goal. Or two. -
If true, I don't like this one bit. But if he was going to leave at the end of the season anyways, best to get something for him. But DAMN! Vancouver Whitecaps are trading Julian Gressel to Columbus: report https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/whitecaps-trade-julian-gressel-columbus

[Official] Canada's Men National Football Team (Soccer)

The Canadian Women's National Team starts its World Cup journey on Thursday. They play Nigeria. The game is on TSN at 7:15pm. -
5-0 final. Second half goals from Jorginho on a penalty kick, Martinelli and Havertz. There were unlimited substitutions in the game so it was almost two different teams for each side at the end of the game from the ones that started the game. The second half was scrambly. Declan Rice made his Arsenal debut in the second half. Didn't do anything extraordinary but was present. Arsenal bought his rights for about U$135 million dollars. It occurred to me that you could buy the MLS All-Star starting eleven players for less. Soccer finances are weird. And it's a good thing Arsenal won. Saka (with two assists) was voted player of the game. Attendence: 20,621, most of whom seemed to be cheering for Arsenal.

2-0 at half time. Jesus and Trossard. Both nice goals. MANY Arsenal jersies in the crowd. Speaking of jersies, the fluorescent lime-green away jersies that Arsenal is wearing this season take a bit of getting used to. But they are cool looking. Not a bad game to watch. Given that this is only Arsenal's second or third outing and you have a bunch of good MLS players who have never played with each other before. On to the second half.

Almost Famous From the IMDb website: "A high-school boy in the early 1970s is given the chance to write a story for Rolling Stone magazine about an up-and-coming rock band as he accompanies them on their concert tour." It's based loosely on the life of writer-director Cameron Crowe. I remember seeing this movie when it came out in 2000 and feeling indifferent about it. It popped up on TCM recently and, twenty-three years later, I really enjoyed it. 4 stars out of 5.

[Signing] Blackhawks sign Connor Bedard
UnkNuk replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I was wondering what these "A" and "B" Level Bonuses were and I found this explanation: https://puckpedia.com/salary-cap/entry-level-performance-bonuses So if Bedard finishes in the top ten forward goals he makes a lot of money.
