Crepeau steals a point for the Caps. Sets up a somewhat important game against Seattle on Sunday. And Seattle is going to come out gunning because they need a win, too. And they're one of the best teams in the league. Go CAPS!!!!!

San Jose does the Whitecaps a favour and upsets RSL 4-3.
-
Fifth place! At least for a few days. And then the madness starts all over again on the weekend. Gotta love it!
-
So, depending on how games go tonight, at the end of the night the Whitecaps could be anywhere from fourth to ninth in the West.

[PGT] Minnesota Wild at Vancouver Canucks | Oct. 26, 2021

Hopefully, this game was a trade-off by the Sporting Gods. Minnesota beats the Canucks tonight. Minnesota loses to the Whitecaps tomorrow. -
At least temporarily. RSL is still only two points behind the seventh place (and last playoff spot) Caps with a game in hand. If the Caps beat Minnesota on Wednesday they'll vault into sixth place over the Loons and Minnesota will be on the hot seat looking at RSL. The Caps pretty much have to win their last three games to be assured of a playoff spot. Anything short of that and they'll have to depend on other teams losing. Had they really been playing at home for the whole season they would be in a safe playoff spot already. Had they had Ryan Gauld all season they would be in a safe playoff spot already. But it is what it is and this should be pretty entertaining to watch.
-
A win would have been great but a draw on the road gives the Caps what might be a very valuable point after all is said and done. Major, major game coming up on Wednesday against Minnesota.

Unbelievable! In a good way!

I agree about the hypocrisy and self-interest of other teams. But I wonder if this identification of Newcastle with the Saudis, who are in the world's spotlight, might result in some sort of political protests at Newcastle games if Saudi Arabia again does something.....untoward. -

Do they, though? Based on this article, maybe they don't: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/07/sports/soccer/newcastle-saudi-premier-league.html A group led by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign investment fund completed its purchase of the Premier League soccer team Newcastle United on Thursday, moving swiftly to overcome objections to its yearslong pursuit of a place as an owner in one of the world’s most prominent sporting competitions. The sale instantly transformed Newcastle, an underachieving club whose home in the north of England is far from the power centers of European soccer, into theoretically one of the richest teams in the world, backed by the wealth of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a vehicle that controls assets worth $500 billion. -
https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/news/article/british-columbia-woman-rocked-awake-by-meteorite-chunk-crashing-into-bedroom B.C. woman rocked awake by meteorite chunk crashing into bedroom Ruth Hamilton had been asleep for hours in her Golden, B.C., home when she awoke to the sound of her dog barking, giving her a moment's notice before a rock from outer space hurtled into her bedroom. "The next thing was just a huge explosion and debris all over my face," Hamilton recalled in an interview Tuesday. "I jumped out of bed and turned on the lights. I didn't know what else to do, so I called 911," she said. "Talking to the operator, she was asking me all kinds of questions, and at that point, I rolled back one of the two pillows I'd been sleeping on and in between them was the meteorite." A charcoal-grey chunk of rock roughly the size of a melon had plummeted from space, tearing through Hamilton's roof before coming to rest on her floral pillowcase, inches from where her head had been moments earlier. "I was shaking like a leaf," said Hamilton. "You're sound asleep, safe, you think, in your bed, and you can get taken out by a meteorite, apparently."

Not sure where to post this but "60 Minutes" had an interesting segment on 'Deep Fakes' yesterday. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/deepfake-artificial-intelligence-60-minutes-2021-10-10/ "You may never have heard the term "synthetic media"— more commonly known as "deepfakes"— but our military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies certainly have. They are hyper-realistic video and audio recordings that use artificial intelligence and "deep" learning to create "fake" content or "deepfakes." The U.S. government has grown increasingly concerned about their potential to be used to spread disinformation and commit crimes. That's because the creators of deepfakes have the power to make people say or do anything, at least on our screens. Most Americans have no idea how far the technology has come in just the last four years or the danger, disruption and opportunities that come with it."

Fair points. But I wonder if the team waved a hefty enough contract under their noses whether top flight players might be willing to overlook the lack of European competition and the size of the city? -

You and others may have noticed, like I have, that there is limited discussion about the Men's National Team and other soccer topics here at CDC. If you don't already know about it, I came across this site a while ago that does have a robust discussion about the MNT: https://www.canadiansoccernews.com/forums/forum/13-mens-national-teams/ It's the Canadian Soccer News site and it has a discussion format very similar to CDC but focuses on soccer topics. -

I don't know about Davies. But Haaland and Mbappe? Why not? They've got the money for it and it'd certainly be a way of making a big splash. -

Being a casual EPL fan, I didn't know much about Newcastle's situation or even who Mike Ashley was. Then I read this article in today's NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/08/sports/soccer/newcastle-saudi-arabia-premier-league.html It points out the duress Newcastle fans have been under. But it also raises eithical questions about the fact the new owner is Saudi Arabia. I'm not sure what to make of it - other than that politics and money seem to permeate everything nowadays. -
The Canadian Men's National Team (#51) continues its attempt to qualify for the World Cup this week with a set of three games. First up, away at Mexico (#9) on Thursday. Then, away at Jamaica (#59) on Sunday. Then, home to Panama (#68) next Wednesday. Three games in a week poses a problem for coach John Herdman. Does he go all out against Mexico (Canada has never won in Mexico) or does he rest some of his better players in the hope of increasing the chances of winning the other two games?

Far out, indeed: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/nasas-lucy-mission-to-jupiters-trojan-asteroids-everything-you-need-to-know/?ftag=CAD-03-10abj4f&bhid=27387568584822941599927611586826&mid=13534704&cid=1494321690 Far out in Jupiter's orbit lie the Trojan asteroids -- fossils from the rock collection that spawned the giant planets over 4 billion years ago. These hovering time capsules could hold the key to unlocking the origins of planets. In a couple of weeks, NASA's Lucy mission is sending a spacecraft toward these ancient raw materials in an ambitious and daring attempt to access our solar system's well-preserved history.

'Pandora papers' leak - a massive list of probable tax cheats
UnkNuk replied to Dazzle's topic in Off-Topic General
Talking of the way the wealthy can avoid taxation, there was an interesting article recently in the NY Times about the way some American tax regulations are created: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/19/business/accounting-firms-tax-loopholes-government.html For six years, Audrey Ellis and Adam Feuerstein worked together at PwC, the giant accounting firm, helping the world’s biggest companies avoid taxes. In mid-2018, one of Mr. Feuerstein’s clients, an influential association of real estate companies, was trying to persuade government officials that its members should qualify for a new federal tax break. Mr. Feuerstein knew just the person to turn to for help. Ms. Ellis had recently joined the Treasury Department, and she was drafting the rules for this very deduction. That summer, Ms. Ellis met with Mr. Feuerstein and his client’s lobbyists. The next week, the Treasury granted their wish — a decision potentially worth billions of dollars to PwC’s clients. About a year later, Ms. Ellis returned to PwC, where she was immediately promoted to partner. She and Mr. Feuerstein now work together advising large companies on how to exploit wrinkles in the tax regulations that Ms. Ellis helped write. -
A nice win by Dallas although the ending was a bit more dramatic than it needed to be. The Boys played well but let's not get over-confident while the game is still on.

Last place Austin does the Whitecaps a favour and beats RSL 2-1 today. Now the Caps have to take advantage of the gift and beat San Jose tonight.
