  1. Hmmm....that's one strange timeline. The murder took place in 1975. Skakel wasn't found gulity until 2002. He was sentenced to 20 years to life. He was granted a new trial in 2013 after spending 11 years in jail. He was freed on bail. In 2018, his 2002 murder conviction was overturned. In 2020, the State announced it would not go ahead with a second trial. Without knowing anything else about this case, maybe the guy was innocent?
  2. That's wrong. The Honduras game was, and the El Salvador game will be, available on Sportsnet.
  3. Whoa, whoa, whoa! Alf, let's not go overboard here. Yes, I was expecting a win, too. But there isn't that much of a difference in world ranking between Honduras and Canada. And to give Honduras credit, they played a pretty good defensive game. I see, too, that three of the four games played today ended in draws: Canada/Honduras; Panama/Costa Rica 0-0; and, perhaps most surprisingly, in El Salvador it was El Savador 0 US 0. Only Mexico was able to register a win with a late goal in a 2-1 victory over Jamaica. Looks like Canada wasn't the only team unable to get fully untracked in their first game. Gotta figure, though, that the US will come out charging at home on Sunday.
  4. Rory Kennedy, the youngest of RFK's ten (!) children, has written a guest editorial in the NY Times: Robert Kennedy Was My Dad. His Assassin Doesn’t Deserve Parole. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/01/opinion/sirhan-sirhan-parole-kennedy.html?campaign_id=39&emc=edit_ty_20210902&instance_id=39435&nl=opinion-today&regi_id=56405277&segment_id=67900&te=1&user_id=dc88543b79693b0f05322365a827e237 In it, as can be gleaned from the title, she argues that Sirhan Sirhan should not be paroled. She also says her mother and the majority of her nine siblings agree with her. She also makes the point that Sirhan has already been shown compassion when his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
  5. Well, that didn't go as well as it should have. #59 Canada 1 #63 Honduras 1 After going down one goal in the first half, I thought Canada dominated the second. But they just weren't in synch. I suppose that's to be expected given that it's been about two months since the top team has been together. Now they go to the US to play #10 USA on Sunday. The game will be on TSN. A loss there and Wednesday's game against #64 El Salvador suddenly becomes very important. The El Salvador game will be available on Sportsnet. I thought the streaming service "One Soccer" had the rights to the Canadian qualifying games but it seems I was wrong. Just as I was wrong thinking Canada would win this game 2-0 or 3-0.
  6. Canada's campaign to get to the World Cup begins tomorrow (Thursday) as they play their first game in the final qualifying round. Overall, they play three games of the fourteen total over the next week. The schedule: Canada vs Honduras Sept 2, 5:00. US vs Canada Sept 5, 5:00. Canada vs El Salvador Sept 8, 4:30. Unfortunately, I don't think the Honduras and El Salvador games are available on network tv. They are available on the streaming service "One Soccer": https://onesoccer.ca/ Fortunately, the US game will be available on TSN 4. To get off to a good start you gotta figure Canada has to win the two home games. Let the fun begin!
  7. Dallas (assuming he's willing to be a backup)?
  8. Yep. There are Muslims who honestly and sincerely believe that the world would be a better place if every country converted to Islam and practiced Sharia law. Just as there are those in the West (myself included) who honestly and sincerely believe the world would be a better place if every country adopted the liberal democratic system that is practiced in North America and Europe. And, no, I'm not sure what my point is either.
  9. Exactly. Did you have time to source the links in the article to see if they substantiated what the article's author was saying? Neither did I. And yet, such checking should be done. As far as their form of democracy, that's another fact I knew nothing about. I had never heard of the "Loya Jirga" until I read the article. For that matter, it's only in the past week or two that I learned "Tali" in Taliban means 'student'. I also thought that the Taliban were part of the Mujihadeen and had fought against the Soviets. Apparently, the Taliban actually developed in reaction to the Mujihadeen after the Mujihadeen had defeated the Soviets and started infighting amongst themselves in a power struggle. And the main organizing force behind the Taliban was Pakistan, who organized thousands of Afghan refugees who were in religious schools in Pakistan. What jumped out at me in your original post was the opening line: The inconvenient truth about the US's involvment in Afghanistan Books, articles PHD theses are going to be written about Afghanistan for decades to come. The idea that any of us here know "The Truth" about what's happened in Afghanistan is unlikely.
  10. It's an interesting article. But is it accurate? This is a problem I'm confronted with time and time again. We're constantly being bombarded by different complicated issues - Afghanistan, climate change, economics etc. There's no way I have the time to get a comprehensive understanding of any of these issues let alone all of them. And each one warrants a large amount of time to get any sort of understanding of what is going on. I end up with a fuzzy, superficial grasp of these issues which can be upended by some new fact of which I'm unaware, of which there are plenty. That doesn't stop me from having opinions on these subjects. But in my better (more truthful) moments I realize just how superficial my understanding of these issues really is.
  11. The James Webb Space Telescope, NASA's next great observatory, passes final ground tests NASA and its partners working on the James Webb Space Telescope have completed their final tests of the giant observatory and are now preparing it for a trip to a South American spaceport for a launch later this year. Conceived more than 30 years ago as a successor of the then new Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb will be the largest observatory ever to be put in orbit. It is designed to use its infrared eyes to peer further into the universe's history than ever before. With its 6.5-meter in diameter gold-plated mirror, the telescope will attempt to answer questions about the formation of first stars and galaxies out of the darkness of the early universe. https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-testing-complete
  12. "A fake impression": Axel Schuster explains why Vancouver dismissed head coach Marc Dos Santos https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/a-fake-impression-axel-schuster-explains-why-vancouver-dismissed-head-coach-marc (A reminder: Vancouver plays RSL tonight at 7 pm on TSN.)
  13. I see Trevor Lawrence went 11/12 for 139 yards and 2 TDs today in the Jaguars game against the Cowboys. Not sure who the Cowboys were playing on defence while he was in there but I hope it wasn't their #1 side.
  14. Dunno. Maybe Elias will tell us. But I always thought the killing of Oswald was suspicious. I guess there's nothing that says a small time hood like Jack Ruby couldn't become an outraged patriot. But I still think it was suspicious.
  15. Champions League draw was made this week: Since Arsenal was inexplicably excluded from the tournament, I think I'll follow PSG. I hope they hold onto Mbappe. That should be a fun team to watch.
  16. I'm open to a conspiracy theory about the Kennedy killings. Who do you think was behind them?
  17. I think that's what I'm questioning. (And I'm really not sure about this, but here goes.) While each life may count equally, the roles we play in society differ. And the fact is, some people have roles that are much more important than those of the rest of us. And when those people are killed, because of their roles, it seems to me that there is an argument for treating their killers differently than other killers. One other thing: the idea of "rehabilitation" has been mentioned in this thread. Since when did punishment stop being an element in our judicial system? Let's say Sirhan actually was genuinely remorseful after, say, five years and was considered 'rehabilitated' by the authorities. Should he then be let out after five years?
  18. It's about time. **************************************************************************************** B.C. sports fans can now bet on big games like the Grey Cup, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, or the Super Bowl. The BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is now taking bets on individual events — from prize fights, to Nascar races, to baseball games — thanks to Bill C-218, Ottawa’s Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act. The bill received Royal assent in June, and became the law of the land Aug. 27. https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/08/27/bc-single-game-sports-betting-canada/
  19. Three games. Three losses. And zero goals scored. Remarkable. They play Norwich and Burnley in their next two games. If they don't win both I suspect Arteta is gone.
  20. I'm okay with a red card. I'm okay with a penalty kick. But I really disagree with penalizing a player/team with a red card AND giving the opposing team a penalty kick. It's overkill. If you're going to give the penalty kick (which, most of the time, will result in a goal), then give the offending player a yellow card. I know the ref was enforcing the rules. Change the rules!
  21. I don't know. Sirhan not only killed a man, he changed history. RFK was the peace candidate. Had he won in '68, the Vietnam War might have been over years sooner than it was. How many lives would have been saved if this had happened? Yes, there's a lot of 'if's in there. But this wasn't just 'another' murder. Interesting question, though. Wonder what the California governor is going to decide?
