In his speech today, Biden said there was a range of opinions on how long it might take for the Taliban to take over. Including at least one that said it would be quick. But he said the majority opinion was that it would take some time. He said, and repeated, it was his decision to go with the majority opinion. And as President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, he should take responsiblity. At least in public. But, in private, I think you're right. There are people in the intelligence services and armed forces who should probably be replaced.

Caps bounce back in the second half for a 2-1 win! And I'm rapidly becoming a Ryan Gauld fan. He came on in the second half. Didn't score but was involved in both Whitecap goals.

And while I'm here: Just finished watching HBO's six part mini-series "The White Lotus". It's about a group of rich people who travel for a one week vacation in Hawaii at a luxury resort - the White Lotus. We learn early in the series that someone has died during the stay but this isn't really a murder mystery show. It's more of a character study of the rich tourists and some of the staff working to accomodate them. While there were a couple of scenes I could have done without, on the whole I enjoyed it. Great acting and writing.

One last note on the Arsenal loss - now the President of Rwanda is weighing in! -
I think it's understandable that the US would want to pull out of Afghanistan. For that matter, I had no problem with Canada pulling its troops out of Afghanistan back in 2014. But the immediate issue is the way they've pulled out. I think most everyone now agrees that it could have been handled better.

I'm certainly open to the idea that governments may have ulterior motives for their actions. But in the case of Afghanistan: If the US government was only interested in it for the opiates or whatever, why did they take so long to invade? The Soviet Union pulled out of Afghanistan in 1989. Yet the US only invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Why the delay? Surely you agree that 9/11 was the major impetus for the invasion even if there may have been secondary considerations concerning the invasion?

Yes. It's going to be especially hard on Afghan women in their early twenties and younger who have grown up under a more moderate regime in the city where they had some rights and were able to go to school etc. Now, those rights, which they've known all their lives, are going to be taken away. Talk about a culture shock. And yet, what was the US to do? Stay there forever? What a mess.

Yep. Problem is, for these last years, they never seem to speed up and challenge for 1st place. -
Another game, another draw for the Whitecaps. Fifth in a row. This time, 0-0 against San Jose. A ho-hum game. Really nothing to say about it. Next, off to Austin on Wednesday and then a real home game at BC Place on Saturday against LAFC.

Canada's Knowledge Network is running a four part documentary series called "Afghanistan: The Wounded Land". I've watched the first two episodes and they're quite interesting. Episodes can be streamed at KN's website: https://www.knowledge.ca/program/afghanistan-wounded-land?utm_source=streambutton&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=enews&utm_content=NSDO13082021 A preview clip:

Awfully sporting of Arsenal to allow newly-promoted Brentford to win their first game in the Premier League in many years and give their fans a thrill. You don't see much of that in professional sports nowadays. -
Must be maddening if you're one of his clean teammates.

Makes you wonder what happens if theTaliban does attack the US Embassy and kidnaps, wounds or kills American staff. Does the whole cycle start over again?

https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/12/politics/us-citizens-afghanistan/index.html US Embassy in Kabul again urges Americans to leave Afghanistan ‘immediately’ The US Embassy in Kabul again urged American citizens to leave Afghanistan “immediately” amid rapid Taliban gains in the country. It is the second such security alert in less than a week urging the immediate departure of US citizens. “The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to leave Afghanistan immediately using available commercial flight options,” the embassy said Thursday, noting that Americans who cannot afford to purchase airline tickets should contact the embassy “for information regarding a repatriation loan.” The embassy issued its alert as the Taliban continued its assault, seizing major cities and capitols, dealing blow after blow to the Afghan government, its army and the US and its allies who trained Afghan forces.

Everyone's favourite team is featured on this season of Hard Knocks which debuts tonight on HBO. Unfortunately, HBO Canada won't be carrying the series. However, it will be available on DAZN starting on Thursday. Looking forward to it as I'm sure all of you are!

Fourth draw in a row. Including three games with teams that are currently in a playoff position. Even though they're still in last place in the West, the Whitecaps seem to be on the verge of becoming a decent team. Maybe the new signings can get them to that next level.
-
Ryan Gauld. Yes, they did get him and he played the last fifteen minutes or so of tonight's game. Based on that small sample I'm looking forward to when he plays a full game.

Some good news: most of the Vernon evacuation alert has been lifted, at least for the time being: https://globalnews.ca/news/8095447/white-rock-lake-wildfire-vernon-evacuation-alert/ The City of Vernon has rescinded part of its evacuation alert that it issued late Friday night because of the White Rock Lake wildfire. The alert was issued at 10:43 p.m. on Friday and was in response to the massive fire that’s now encroaching the northwestern shores of Okanagan Lake. The fire is estimated at 55,000 hectares, but city officials rescinded part of the evacuation alert on Saturday afternoon due to a change in weather conditions that included light rain. However, not all parts of Vernon are in the clear. The city said there are parts that remain under evacuation alert, including: Canadian Lakeview Estates in its entirety Adventure Bay in its entirety Tronson Road (from 8125 to 9280) “The City of Vernon works closely with BC Wildfire Services and seeks advice on evacuation alerts and evacuation orders,” the city said in a press release that was issued at 2:30 p.m. “With changes to the current weather conditions, the probability of ember debris causing spot fires has been reduced. “While the weather forecast over the next 48 hours is favourable enough to rescind the alert for properties within the City of Vernon boundaries, the region remains at high risk and the situation is subject to rapid and immediate change.” The city strongly recommends that “residents maintain heightened awareness, and have evacuation plans in place, including identifying accommodation in advance of an evacuation order.”
