  1. USA 2 Canada 0 So it turns out the Canadian Mens Team aren't the Kings of CONCACAF after all. Full credit to the Americans. They looked dangerous all game and they disrupted the Canadian flow while squelching any forward attacks. Our forwards looked surprisingly inept. The team seemed out of sync all game. Our guys haven't won a trophy in 23 years. And we haven't beaten the Americans on their home turf since 1957. And both streaks continue. When you think of CONCACAF, you think of the US, Mexico and Canada. The US has, in the past few days, collectively beaten the other two 5-0. I think we have a pretty good idea of who the Kings of CONCACAF really are.
  2. From the article: "After completing the first season of a five-year, $251 million contract, Beal's standing as the NBA's only current player to have a no-trade clause negotiated into his deal gave him the ability to control not only possible destinations, but how a potential package to acquire him impacted his new supporting cast." How is it that every other player in the NHL (or so it seems) has a no-trade clause in their contract and the NBA has only this guy? NBA agents falling down on the job?
  3. I was recently reading about Gabe Plotkin - one of the guys who's buying the Hornets. He's the financier who got squeezed (for hundreds of millions of dollars) while trying to short-sell Gamestop a few years ago. Looks like he's recovered okay.
  4. This is why mandatory parole reviews are useful. Even for criminals that have no hope in hell of getting parole, it's important that every convict's file is reviewed on a regular basis so that no-one is 'forgotten about" as happened in this case.
  5. More details here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/16/sports/basketball/ja-morant-grizzlies-suspended-nba.html?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20230616&instance_id=0&nl=breaking-news&ref=cta&regi_id=56405277&segment_id=135926&user_id=dc88543b79693b0f05322365a827e237 Ja Morant Suspended for 25 Games After Second Gun Video The N.B.A. suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant for 25 games without pay to start the 2023-24 season after a league investigation found that he had posed with a gun in a video streamed on social media for the second time in just over two months. Morant was suspended for eight games after the first video in March. On Friday, N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver said it was “alarming and disconcerting” that Morant had repeated his behavior after telling the league and the public that he wouldn’t. “The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning,” Silver said in a statement Friday morning announcing the new punishment. “Under these circumstances we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated.” A few hours later, the N.B.A. players’ union pushed back against the discipline, calling it “excessive and inappropriate.”
  6. Canada will play the US in the final on Sunday after the Americans beat Mexico 3-0 in a spirited affair. And what would a spirited US/Mexico game be without one or two red cards. Or, as in this case, four - two to each team. I'm not sure how many yellows were handed out. Or should have been handed out. Hard to tell when players start going at each other in groups. Fortunately, the physical silliness was confined to the field. There were 60,000+ fans at the game and Mexican fans and American fans were well mixed with one another. Other than some cups of (hopefully) beer being thrown on the field at the players, the crowd was peaceful. Vocal, however. With the physical mixups that happened in the second half, there was 12 minutes of extra time added. The game was halted for a minute shortly into extra time due to "discriminatory chants" from the crowd. When the chants continued after a PA warning, the ref wisely ended the game after only six minutes of extra time. The Americans looked good. Canada is going to have its hands full on Sunday. We shall see what happens.
  7. Canada 2 Panama 0 Goals by our main men - David & Davies. Some nice saves from Borjan. This was not a one-sided game. Have to add: it was a well-reffed game. The ref let a lot of stuff go by both sides which other refs might have called. Created a nice flowing game. On to the Final on Sunday against either the US or Mexico.
  8. The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich While they may have faded from memory, Gamestop, Robin Hood & WallStreetBets were pretty big topics a couple of years ago. Ben Mezrich takes a look back at this event by focussing on about half-a-dozen people who were involved in the saga: ordinary investors as well as more prominent people such as Keith Gill, who did some of the primary research on Gamestop and who made a lot of money, and Gabe Plotkin, the hedge fund manager who lost a LOT of money on the Gamestop short squeeze. Easy to read and enjoyable if only for the human interest aspect of the story.
  9. Jokic is at it again. Now he's lost his MVP trophy.
  10. The Concacaf Nations League semi-finals are on tomorrow (Thursday) in Las Vegas. Canada plays Panama at 4pm. US plays Mexico at 7pm. The losers will play each other for 3rd and 4th place on Sunday at 3pm. Winners will play each other for the trophy on Sunday at 5:30 pm. Since it's only soccer, none of the games are scheduled for network tv. But they will be available on Fubo/OneSoccer.
  11. Jokic is certainly a down-to-earth person. After finishing his job as a basketball player, all he wants is to go home. Too bad about that parade.
  12. I thought the star of the post-game ceremony was Jokic's little girl who was wrestling with her Dad's championship hat throughout.
  13. I enjoy the Premier League. But I do wish they'd take a longer break between seasons.
  14. Vancouver 2 Montreal 1 And the Whitecaps win back-to-back Canadian Championships! An entertaining game which the Caps dominated. Had it not been for some very good goaltending from the Montreal keeper, this one would have been a laugher. As it was, Vancouver went out 2-0 and dominated the first eighty minutes. Then, sure enough, Montreal scored a goal and things got tense. But through some scrambly defense and a last second (literally) save by Takaoka and the Caps win. Vanni takes off his shirt, the players raise the trophy and Vancouver fans are happy.
  15. And in Whitecaps news: The Caps play Montreal tonight in the Canadian Championship Final. 7pm. Available on fubo/OneSoccer. On the line is a trophy and a spot in next year's Concacaf Champions League (to be renamed the Concacaf Champions Cup next season). And, btw, given that this is the CANADIAN championship, wouldn't it be nice if one of our Canadian sports networks or even the CBC were to pick up the game?
  16. From what I've read, he's probably going to start playing for Miami in July. Assuming all the i's get dotted and t's get crossed. Good news for Miami. And they need it. They're near the bottom of the standings and they just fired their coach (who must be cursing the timing of it all). And good news for MLS. According to a report from ESPN, Apple may be giving a cut of all new MLS Season Pass subscribers to Messi. So, if you don't already subscribe and you want to help out the poor guy, now may be the time to sign up. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/37772218/lionel-messi-join-mls-inter-miami-psg-exit
  17. BTW: I don't know if it's the high altitude or what but the Denver crowd seems quite subdued compared to other teams' fans.
  18. And things just got more interesting in the NBA Finals.
  19. Vancouver 1 Kansas 1 The first 80 minutes were a bit of a snorefest but the last 10 minutes were entertaining.
  20. There's speculation that Miami's Tyler Herro might be back for Game 2. How much of an impact might he have on the series?
  21. Now that they've won the FA Cup, I hope City wins the UCL. It's not often we get a chance to see greatness. As far as today's game goes, from a neutral's point of view I thought it was so-so. The opening goal was a shocker. But other than that there wasn't all that much to get excited about.
  22. The all-Manchester FA Cup Final is on Sportsnet Pacific this Saturday at 7:00am PDT. Pre-game show on at 6:30am PDT.
  23. "Julian Gressel recorded the first two-goal game of his MLS career and the host Vancouver Whitecaps became the first team in MLS history to score within the first 30 seconds of each half while recording a 6-2 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night." https://www.espn.com/soccer/report/_/gameId/659796
