  1. LSU / Alabama Surprising what a successful fake punt can do to a game.
  2. The main problem I have with religious fundamentalists AND atheists is the certainty with which they hold beliefs on questions that are so huge and profound. Simple humility should make one realize that, no matter how strongly you believe in something, you might be wrong.
  3. Good advice from Devos. I hope Mattocks takes it.
  4. Now we wait for next year. And I think there's reason to be optimistic about next season. The Caps have some good young talent on their roster. Especially at forward: Manneh (18); Mattocks (23); and the almost-forgotten Salgado (20). And Camilo is only 25. At midfield we have Tiebert (20), Hurtado (22) and Koffie (22). Manneh's play alone in these last two games has to give Caps fans hopes for next year when, presumably, he can play a full season. Could be terrific to watch. Whether Rennie is the coach to develop this young talent is something that will probably be discussed here at length. But the Whitecaps could have a promising future.
  5. Kekuta Manneh! Kekuta Manneh!! Kekuta Manneh!!!
  6. The Jays won their eleventh straight game on June 23 (and it seems like a long time ago). Since then, the Jays went 36 - 52 (.409). The Rays went 52 - 34 (.605). Almost mirror images of each other.
  7. Mercifully, it's over. Watching the fallout from this season should be more entertaining than the games were.
  8. A lackluster game against an undermanned RSL team which doesn't reflect well on the coach or the team. Very disappointing.
  9. Nice win by the Lions. But Winnipeg? Wow. One of the poorest displays of football I've seen in many a year.
  10. That Ozil signing is looking pretty good for Arsenal. Assists on all three goals in today's 3-1 win over Stoke.
  11. Well, the Caps are five points out of the playoff picture with only six games left in the season. And those six games are against tough opponents. Away at Montreal who are second in the east. Home to RSL who are second in the west. Home to Portland who are fifth in the west. Away to Seattle who are first in the west. And then back-to-back games against Colorado who are third in the west. If I was betting, I would bet they are cooked. But I'm not betting, and I'm a fan, so I'll hope for the unexpected best.
  12. Anyone else watch the Seattle/RSL game on TSN2 tonight? An entertaining game, I thought. The outcome didn't really have any impact on the Whitecaps, so I could just sit back and enjoy it. The Sounders are looking awfully good. But how do they manage to get these huge crowds? Around 55,000 (!) for tonight's game. Whatever special things they're doing, the rest of the league has to start copying them.
  13. Truly a bad game. But I was impressed with how calm Smith was. He made a few mistakes (three interceptions) and I thought there were a few times there he could have taken off and run for first downs but stayed behind the line and got sacked instead. But he's a rookie starting his second game on a not-very-good-team. He could develop into a keeper alright.
  14. Nope. I think Saban is going to have his revenge for last year's loss. Looking forward to the game, though.
  15. And so after 140 games the Blue Jays are 64 - 76 (.457) and 19.5 games back in their division and 13.5 games back in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) Games 81 - 90: 4 - 6; 10.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (July 10) Games 91 - 100: 1 - 9; 14.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (July 24) Games 101 - 110: 5 - 5; 16.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (Aug 3) Games 111 - 120; 5 - 5; 16.0 games back (Boston/Tampa) WCGB: 13.0 games (Aug 14) Games 121 - 130; 2 - 8; 18.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 16.0 games (Aug 24) Games 131 - 140; 7 - 3; 19.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 13.5 games (Sept 4) What's kind of surprising here is that the Jays played a pretty decent ten game set and still lost ground to Boston. Which shows you how well Boston is playing. Mercifully, we are nearing the end of the season. Actually, I stopped watching months ago. And I wonder how many others did the same and what this has done to the Blue Jays television ratings? I'll get back to watching baseball once the playoffs start.
  16. Okay, granted it was a nice come-back. But still - it was a draw. On home field. Against Chivas. Not good. Not good at all. Looking around for someone to blame for the Caps recent woes, it occurred to me that the only major change they've made recently is to put Ousted in goal. And his record is no great shakes - in five games he's 1 - 2 - 2. And yet he's only let in six goals in those five games. The Caps ability to score simply seems to have vanished. BTW: I also notice that Sebastian Le Toux is leading the MLS in assists with twelve.
  17. Don't you hate it when you're looking forward to a game and then realize partly through it that it's simply not delivering the goods? That's the way I felt about today's Man U/Chelsea game. Kind of a yawner. Now to see what kind of 'third bid' Chelsea makes for Rooney.
  18. Colorado 2 Caps 0 Kind of a nothing game by the Whitecaps. They were on the field, they passed the ball around, but most of it didn't amount to much. Maybe the altitude got to them.
  19. Not helped by some dubious reffing. That penalty kick on Koscielny should never have been awarded - I thought it was a good tackle. And if he doesn't get the first yellow, then he's not out of the game when he gets the second one. Having said that - yes, they still need some help.
  20. So after 120 games the Blue Jays are 55 - 65 (.458) and 16.0 games back in their division and 13.0 games back in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) Games 81 - 90: 4 - 6; 10.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (July 10) Games 91 - 100: 1 - 9; 14.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (July 24) Games 101 - 110: 5 - 5; 16.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (Aug 3) Games 111 - 120; 5 - 5; 16.0 games back (Boston/Tampa) WCGB: 13.0 games (Aug 14) Of the twelve sets of 10 games, the Jays have been under .500 in five sets, at .500 in four sets and over .500 in only three sets. Their next ten games see the Jays play Boston once, the Rays three times, the Yankees four times and the Astros twice. I'm guessin' this is going to be another sub .500 group of ten.
  21. In the midst of this debacle I'd give credit to Blue Jays ownership. They were willing to boost spending by about $35 million this season. But when you boost spending by about 42 percent and end up with a poorer record than the previous season? Ownership is going to make someone responsible for this. AA can always try to say that the players he got were good, they just didn't have the coaching. But who hired the coach? I think AA is in a spot of trouble.
  22. One other thing about the Blue Jays record after 110 games: After 110 games this season, with a payroll of $118 million, the Jays are 50 - 60 (.455) and 16.0 games back in their division. After 110 games last season, with a payroll of $83 million, the Jays were 53 - 57 (.482) and 11.0 games back in their division. I have a hunch that, at season end, Blue Jays ownership are going to have some serious questions for Alex Anthopoulos.
  23. So after 110 games the Blue Jays are 50 - 60 (.455) and 16.0 games back of Boston and 11.0 games back in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) Games 81 - 90: 4 - 6; 10.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (July 10) Games 91 - 100: 1 - 9; 14.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (July 24) Games 101 - 110: 5 - 5; 16.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (Aug 3) The good news is that the Jays didn't lose any ground in the wild card race. The bad news is that the Jays didn't make up any ground in the wild card race. The next set of ten games see the Jays play the Angels once, the Mariners four times, the Athletics four times and the Red Sox twice. They'll win some and they'll lose some and they'll probably be in pretty much the same situation as they are in today. Sigh.
  24. Whitecaps 0 Philadelphia 1 The Caps deserved a tie, at least. What was Davidson thinking? An entertaining game. But that's still two losses in a row and a tough one coming up next week in Portland. Especially with both Davidson and Reo-Coker out with card issues.
